(Addict Music)   Sigur Ros' new LP is disappointing return to their stale, ambient past. "The BBC will be shaking their heads; no longer will they have new material to accompany every nature programme for the next 5 years"   (addictmusic.co.uk ) divider line

since no one else is posting: I've always thought Sigur Ros' popularity was somewhat surprising. The music is decent, but even with a fake language, I've always thought the vocals were terrible. I guess they get credit for not being typical crescendo-core Post-Rock.

I imagine if anyone knew who they were or what kind of music they did that might be a good burn.

I like that ambient music. That's why I liked them in the first place.

I've always felt they were terribly overrated.

I know people who worship them, but then refuse to listen to anything that inspired Sigur Ros.

Anyway, here's my money on the next Icelandic hit:

Yagya - The Inescapable Decay of My Heart

Double album coming on Darla Records. He already has three absolutely legendary albums and this new one will feature vocals. Could be the first dub techno crossover album, which leaves me with mixed feelings. Being on Darla will definitely attract the attention of the post-rock crowd though. Might possibly attract fans of Delerium/chill out/downtempo as well.

I doubt dub techno will ever become popular, but it would be a welcome relief from the sawtooth obnoxiousness of brostep.

I have been listening to Valtari for a couple weeks. I pre-ordered it on A.

I like it. Yes it does remind me of their earlier stuff, but what is wrong with that?

But to really appreciate Sigur Ros, you need to watch Heima and INNI, the videos they released. Very cool stuff.

I found it to be a yawn. There aren't any SONGS there, but Ágætis byrjun has songs-albiet graceful and dreamlike. It's not really a return to form, but a return to...no songs....huge letdown from one of my favorite bands.

Jonsi freely admited he was a one trick pony several albums ago. I like their sound but I ended up seeing them live so many times in a short period that I'm completely over them. Same thing happened to me with Tool, between Opiate and Undertow I probably saw 10 or 12 shows in a couple of years and that just killed them for me.

I had a LOL because a number of years ago I was watching some nature special about arctic waters, and this awesome music came on. Despite the fact that I'm really not a big fan of nature documentaries, I watched it to the bitter end, hoping to find out if those songs were created just for the film or if I would be able to get them on an album. The titles came on... and then they shrunk them down to one pixel per word and scrolled them up and off the screen at light speed.

Luckly, I was able to search teh intarnets for the documentary, which had a home page which listed the music. Sure enough, it was Sigur Ros. I had never heard of them before. So although TFA is a little tongue-in-cheek with that comment, it was quite apropos to me.

Back in 2001 or so: Hey, cool, dreamy, ambient music. The potheads will love this.

By around 2006: Wait, every album is going to sound like this?

Today: This is just music for the Hallmark store now.

Ágætis byrjun and Takk are both gorgeous. I mean, I generally only tend to listen to them when I'm having difficulty falling asleep, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just really beautiful background noise.

If the new record sounds the same, I'll probably just skip it and occasionally listen to the two I already have.

Fans expect a certain amount of musical progression and growth out of each album. The problem with Valtari isn't that it is bad. The problem is that it is regressive when fans were expecting something new.

OTOH, too much progression can also be a bad thing. It's a fine line to walk when you have a really dedicated fanbase.

/Likes Valtari
//Ágætis Byrjun is still my fave

WTF am I reading?

So, this Sigur Ros' is from Iceland, but they sing in a fake language?

They must cause hipster orgasms at 50 yards.

Seems extremely pretentious to me, especially considering they include blank pages in the CD presumably so the listener can "interpret".

Are you talking about Sigur Ros specifically? Because their later stuff isn't ambient at all. Their album before this one was upbeat pop.

Your pronunciation is correct.

I really liked the new record at first, I listened at the release party thing online. It made me go spend $500 to see them perform in a cemetary. I don't like the new record as much now - although the last song Fjoger Piano is still on of the best songs in ever.
