FTFA: A new report about Apple's voice-recognition software Siri concludes what many users have been saying for a while: It doesn't work all that well.

More and more, Apple users demonstrate the behavior of someone stuck in an abusive relationship.

"How are things going?"

"Oh. They're going GREAT! I'm so happy!"

"Is that a black eye? How did that happen?!?"

"Let's not talk about that. I'm not supposed to talk about that."

I watched my friend try to use Siri when his phone was new...I guess he was trying to show off. It was pretty sad; I honestly felt nothing but pity for him. Well, maybe a little contempt.

If Siri just used Google's top search results in combination Wolfram's Alpha most users would be as happy as pigs in shiat.

Love my iPhone. Turned off Siri. I hope this next update makes it useful, but it's not why I bought the phone.

This whole Siri thing makes me rage....

I've been using voice recognition stuff for years. I mean, a decade ago, I thought it was the coolest thing ever - and it wasn't even close to being new. The thing was, it was pretty bad then. And it's still pretty bad. It's a really well known problem. You see, people don't just understand you by listening to individual sound patterns - they use contextual clues to figure out what you are saying. Software that does recognition can't do that because it is not aware.

It works pretty well when there is a limited number of acceptable options. Like the digits 0-9.

Siri hasn't changed the game, in any way. It's the same tech that companies have been using for, well, at least a decade. Goog-411 and the voice-recognition stuff built into my Android phone used the same crap. The voice recognition built into Windows used the same crap. The voice recognition crap built into calling centers....I mean, it's all the same.

People used all the other stuff and were like, 'Meh, not very useful. I'll just click the Start button and do what I want instead of have a 65% chance of getting the correct thing to start'.

Then Apple comes along and takes *THE SAME CRAP* and hires some cool actors to make some commercials and ALL OF A SUDDEN THE WORLD IS FLIPPING OUT ABOUT SIRI.

I am actually pretty impressed with the voice recognition on my Android. Recognizes short phrases very reliably so if I need to send a brief text, I don't have to type. It's also really good at recognizing names of places for searches.

That said, I don't need the farking thing talking back to me, telling me jokes and the meaning of life, as some sort of substitute for a friend.

Well, except that someone did a 1600 question test of Siri vs Jellybean and Jellybean scored 86% compared to 68% on Siri.

http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/06/29/minneapolis-street-test-google - gets-a-b-apples-siri-gets-a-d/

I'd say that 86% is getting to the point where it's worth hitting a search...

Though in that test they used an unreleased Android release (Jelly Bean), but only the current iPhone iOS 5.1.1. They should have tested it against iOS 6 Beta, since one of its main features is vastly improved Siri support (as well as adding Siri to the new iPad).
