ftfa, it appears they've come to terms with it:

"Many Young fans were baffled when Trans appeared on store shelves in December of 1982. It's a Kraftwerk-inspired New Wave album about technology. Making things even weirder, many of Young's vocals are distorted by a Vocoder. Unsurprisingly, the album got mostly terrible reviews. Only years later did music fans start to pick up on the odd brilliance of much of the disc, which was far ahead of its time. The highlight may be the eight-minute "Sample and Hold." There's nothing else like it in the Young catalog. "

If I ever find myself in the presence of an obsessed Neil Young fan I shall remove myself from said presence with great haste lest I become a Smoking Gun feature.

Welfare Mothers Make Better Lovers Link

Heard someone play this accompanied by a bagpipe one time, at a funeral. Right before the fight. Sometimes Florida can be a totally awesome place to live.

If I run into a rabid fan of the Neil Young, i'm assuming they're family, cause his wife and kids are fond of him.

/not that neil young
//when i knew him he was a drafter, then he tried to become a cop, now he fixes engines
//I work with a John Voight, but he's in his mid to late 20's

I have a decent AUD recording of a Neil show circa 1973, I believe, with him doing a pretty garage band-y "Lotta Love", which became a sax-driven early 80s hit for Nicolette Larson.

also, when Nils Lofgren was on Adam Carolla a few years ago, he did a Neil song called "Don't Cry" that is pretty awesome. Nils solo on acoustic. He introduced the song with something like, "i fell in love with this song when I backed Neil on the ___ tour."

I have MP3 of both if you want them, EIP.

You could try, but it might not work. I saw the Trans tour show and it was hilarious. There were hippies in tie die with flowers painted on their faces mingling with pierced blue mohawked new wavers. A happy mixing of generations realizing that they could all get along and enjoy the show. Until....

Neil and the Shocking Pinks came out to do a do-wop set that united most of the crowd in bitter anger. To this day I giggle a bit when I remember that epic troll. Not just an epic troll of his record company, but a poignant jab at folks who still didn't get what Mr Soul was about.

Same here. Was this around the time he toured with a stage setup that included giant Fender amp enclosures, and the stage roadies were dressed as Jawas (including red lights for eyes)?

yep, great tune.

Kind of a "meh" list... Here's 10 more just as good off the top of my head:

Prairie Wind - Prairie Wind
Cryin' Eyes - Life
Hippy Dream - Landing On Water
Prime Of Life - Sleeps With Angels
Are You Passionate? - Are You Passionate?
Twilight - This Note's For You
Shots - re*ac*tor
Safeway Cart - Sleeps With Angels
Cant' Believe Your Lyin' - This Note's For You
I Got A Problem - Landing On Water

/ + too many honorable mentions to mention

1) I like 'Trans'

2) A fews months back I read his bio 'Shakey' for which Neil gave extensive interviews and 'ok'd' people to talk with the author.

Neil is not someone to drink beers with or have as a friend.

I think that was the tour for the Rust Never Sleeps album.

I really enjoy Arc. Got it when it came out and it was my introduction his music, albeit a pretty misleading one. I was (and remain) into noise, drone, ambient, and experimental guitar music, so when I read about Arc I grabbed it out of curiosity just to see what the old guy could do. Dug it a lot and still do.

Later I became a fan of his music in earnest. Whether he's doing folk or country or rock, I'm always up for checking out what he's doing. Favorite Neil Young record is the sorely overlooked Silver and Gold, a beautiful, stripped-down acoustic record with some of his best melodies.

All I need to know about Neil Young is that he invented grunge and should punished for it

How can album cuts be obscure?

I liked Trans from the get go. I think I have 4 cuts in iTunes, which is my definition of a good album.

Check out the first Archives box (8 CDs). Top-notch Neil Young with some actual obscurity.

I did not enjoy Arc.

EVERY one.

Neil changed with the times and as music influenced him and i respect that. formula bands that excrete CD after CD of interchangeable sound-alike drivel are not artists, they are contractual obligations.

i can play and sing some of Neil's songs and you'd be startled by how much i sound just like him. dammit to hell. obviously i'm keeping my metaphorical day job.

I remember a CSNY bootleg where they're tuning up and one of them keeps saying "no, somebody's still out of tune" and then I believe Stills says "nah, it's just Neil."

Its still an an awesome album. Also, if you dig "Trans" find a copy of his live show "Berlin". Not sure how easy it is to find. I have it on DVD. Awesome show... does a ton of "Trans" along with the standards "Into the black", etc.

2012-06-30 04:49:01 PM
And another favorite, that I believe was never released and only availble on the aforementioned "Berlin" live DVD:

The song "Berlin". Pretty damn good song. I couldn't even find it online, had to dub it from my DVD to make an mp3 out of it.

Come to think of it, I had a vhs of Trans live. I wonder what ever happened to it.

I have consulted with Netflix and we agree that it is, in fact, the Berlin show. It is good. Netflix doesn't have it.

Rabid Neil fans quote "More barn!"

It was said already, but the full version of 60 to 0 is one of his best songs, even though the only copy I had of it was on a poorly recorded trade tape like 20 years ago.

I like Trans...

2012-07-01 12:09:33 AM
Weird. Trans is the only neil young album I have. I rememember hearing 'computer age' on the radio as a kid and really liking it. When I got older I looked for the kraftwerk album that had it. Not surprisingly, I failed.

Prefer Cortez the Killer, the only neil song I've liked since After the Gold Rush.
Arc is a hippie take on Metal Machine Music.

Sorry - Trans was a hell of an album. Sadly - it would have been better had David Geffen just put out Island In The Sun like Neil had wanted, then Trans. Instead - we got a "best of" compilation of the two albums instead of an all-vocoder album like Trans should have been
