I saw the first one in person. I'm going to the D-Backs games on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday. Will we get number 3?

And he completed the cycle in the 6th inning too.

this is a great season, lot of new talent and top teams who were pitiful just a year ago.
I wish the Yanks would cool down soon!

Looks like baseball carried over from an awesome final night and great postseason. Not bad at all. :D

I never understood why hitting for the cycle was so important other than it statistically pleasing. 2HRs and 2 doubles should be considered a more highly regarded achievement, for example.

I think it's just one of those statistically interesting things that rarely happens. That, and triples are hard as hell for most players to hit.

In terms of frequency, it's roughly equal to a no-hitter (which has happened about 20 more times in MLB history).

Also, 2 teams have never had a player hit for the cycle- the Marlins and the Padres.

Meanwhile, this was the 6th cycle in Diamondbacks history (14 years). The Braves, who have existed through multiple relocations and name changes since 1896, have only 6 cycles in 115 years. The White Sox have only 5 or 6 in their 115+ year history.

In a game filled with statistics, rare feats like this are going to be appreciated. More so when it happens to one guy twice in 11 days.

/You could hear the shock in Mark Grace's voice when Hill slid into 3rd to complete it last night. It's just unbelieveable.

I think this is the key. It gives non-stat people a hitting phenomenon roughly equivalent to the no-hitter. Never mind that hitting 2 doubles and 2 homers is twice as rare or that hitting 3 triples is ten times as rare. Hitting for the cycle is a funny fluke that happens roughly as often as a no-hitter and so a lot of people give it roughly the same value.

Really lame feat. Never understood why people take this so seriously.

And I'm a baseball stats geek. And I love anomolies (Jayson Stark does a great job every week or so going through the strange things... usually involving numbers... that happened in baseball.)

But this one... just think it gets far too much attention.

Because it's just cool, and it happens pretty damn rarely. And there's always the chance someone does it in order, starting with a single and ending with a homer.

Sometimes I wonder if people who claim the cycle isn't a big deal are the same people in 2000 telling us it wasn't the new millennium yet. Just chill and enjoy the novelty.
