Stopped for gas at I-15 and 119 today and there was a giant billboard by the waffle house. It had a photo showing a silhouette of a firefighter working against a backdrop of a wall of flames and burning trees. The only text on it was the big white letters spelling out "Thank You"

It was pretty cool.

Back in 1980, I was living in the mountaintop tourist community of Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino in Southern California. In November of 1980, a couple of days before Thanksgiving, one of the worst wildfires in California broke out. It was called the Panorama fire, and 286 houses and four lives were lost.

My family and I tried to leave the mountain as quickly as possible. But my mother flatly refused. She wanted to stand her ground. While my stepfather, stepsister and I loaded up the pickup trucks, she sat and watched TV and drank herself nearly blind. Some sheriff deputies finally showed up and told us to bug out. Trying to drive down the Rim highway was an ordeal. It felt like it took a million years and we didn't get that far. There was smoke and ash and embers fling everywhere. The fire was trying to jump the highway and into the community where it would've been impossible to stop.

The only thing holding back the fire was a line of firefighters. There were a few places where the highway narrowed, and you could look over the side, and down below there were the firefighters who looked like a gang of Archangel Micheal's mates holding the line against the forces of Hell.

We finally got to Crestline, and we were told that we couldn't go any farther and we couldn't go back. If the firefighters couldn't hold the line, we were pretty much boned. My mom owned a little soup and sandwich in Crestline, so we had a place to be. The rest of the town was pretty much abandoned. So I decided to walk down main street and see what else was going on.

I ended up at the bowling alley. There were only two other people there: The manager and a female cashier. They had waited too long too. I wasn't much for bowling, but they did have a great arcade. I got a couple of rolls of quarters and started playing, Just as I finished off the last roll of quarters, a firefighter bust in through bowling alley's doors.

He was missing his headgear, along with half the hair on top of his head and and an eyebrow. You could barely tell what color his firefighting outfit was. And I swear to God that his ax was smoking. He then looks around, sees the female cashier, and walks up to her with a swagger that would make John Wayne envious.

"Fire's contained," he says to the girl, "Let's go get married."

And out of the bowling alley they ran.

A couple hours later, the fire emergency was over for us, and a couple more hours later, we were sleeping in our own beds.

Smeggy Smurf: If he hadn't cut the budget for equipping AC-130s with the fire fighting equipment we'd have hundreds of planes working instead of 8.

Except that the fleet of AC-130s equipped to handle firefighting using the necessary equipment before the budget cuts numbered...wait for it...eight. In other words, the same number of planes would be fighting the fire right now regardless of the cuts.

Oh, and the cuts haven't actually happened yet. Also, it cut 65 planes from a total of something like 400.

Yep. Here comes big government to put out all of the fires that the local residents can't or choose not to put out for themselves. HOW WILL THESE PEOPLE EVER LEARN TO PUT OUT FIRES, POOPBAMA?!?!

edmo: Yesterday on FOX: "Obama Hasn't Spoken to Colorado Gov for 15 Days Despite Raging Wildfires"

What's your point, anyways?

There are 58 active wildfires in the US. Is he supposed to call for all of them? Or the 100's that happen in previous years?

CO evacuations began on Wednesday. He got out there by Friday. That's pretty damn fast with all the other shiat going on right now.

I like how you posted that on the same page as Bush with the guitar during Katrina. It's like you wanted everyone to see your fail in high definition.

coffee smells good: anderseb2010: Obama wants more firefighters! The private sector is doing fine, okay! Obama is responsible for not spending enough on firefighting planes! Radical, socialist, communist, Marxist, Obamacare, blah-blah-blah...

But seriously, cheers to these guys. Obama's no gem, but you don't see Romney rushing to the scene (if only for a photo op). But what does it matter when you can just terrify the middle with millions and millions of dollars worth of ads?

Obama hadn't even spoken with CO's governor in over two weeks until a reporter asked him about it on Tuesday. Obama made the trip, not because of concern, but because CO is a swing state.

Using your logic, Obama helpedthe situation by showing up for a photo-op.

Nothing personal, but our governor has been kind of busy anyways... he was making rounds in his own car handing out cases of water to firefighters with no media present... FEMA reviewed and accepted our application for emergency aid in less than 9 hours, and though they did not talk (apparently), the Federal Disaster Declaration from President Obama came less than two hours after our Governor sent it to the White House. Obama even made it clear (eventually he ordered the FAA not to clear the airspace) that he wouldn't come if it would, in any way, impede actual firefighting efforts. There's nothing anyone is going to say that could appease your cynicism, but sometimes, like this... you can't possibly grasp the scale of the destruction from our several fires without actually seeing them... Colorado has lost enough acreage to fire already (July isn't even here yet) to cover some of the smaller states. He came, and it was good... but don't kid yourself about any chance of Colorado swinging to Romney now... while our state was burning, he said the lesson from Wisconsin was that we didn't need so many firefighters... these kids are out there battling fires for 12 bucks an hour and no health insurance at all, trying their best to save half-million dollar homes, and the only salute they could get from the national GOP was of the one finger variety. Coloradans may love pot, jesus, and guns... but we're not dumb enough to fall for that farkwit.

propasaurus: Damn Obama politicizing the tragedy in Colorado for his own ego. He's just grandstanding. He should have just stayed home instead of just showing up for a photo op. His being there diverts needed resources from the firefighters, so he's just making things worse by being there.

It's the first time in decades a sitting president has directly ordered the FAA not to clear airspace overhead... firefighting operations went on as planned... he got an escort of a dozen or so paper pushers from the park service and interior, but wasn't really pulling extra emergency services... it was remarkably easy security, given that he was right next to the Air Force Academy and the area he was touring was still evacuated, so there wasn't much of anyone to protect him from.

Your sarcasm isn't even coming close to the level of Weapons Grade Derp in our local papers here. There have been some lovely observations in the opinion columns lately about, among other things;
1) how the firefighters are parasitic leeches sucking on big governments teat,
2) the fire should be taken care of by the private sector,
3) people whose homes were in danger deserved to lose them for having put their houses there in the first place, and that resources should not be wasted saving those who were so 'liberal' as to just expect the government would come save them.
4) how the fires were, for various ill-defined reasons, directly and personally Obama's fault, and
5) (and my favorite) that fighting the fire is a blasphemous and presumptuous liberal attempt to try to alter 'God's Will', and that he chose to start the fires to punish us and he will choose when they end.

I shiat you not. Some letters are a combination of two or three of these tropes. Its like a whole mental wing of a retirement home got a writing assignment.

Oh wait, that's right! They did that when it was Texas on fire but now that its Colorado their hearts are totally with the people and the fire fighters.

Why it's almost as if Colorado's governor isn't talking about seceding and lynching Ben Bernanke and such!

Strange how that works.

Cool. I've seen Republican idiots blabbering about how insensitive and attention-whoring it is for Obama to go there and back up traffic with his motorcade, and how the tax dollars spent on him being there should be spent on fighting the fires, as if it's being siphoned from those efforts. It's like they don't remember that the President visiting disaster zones is traditional. It has happened with every President and every disaster for a very long time.

So now you're saying the government should have spent more money?

That is exactly what I'm saying. The constitution makes it clear that the government is to provide for the general well being of the citizens. Not dying in a fire that can be contained falls under that. The main purpose of the Federal Government is to keep bad guys and bad things from killing it's citizens. Not stealing money from one group to give to another. Not to make sure Bank Rape stays in business. Not to give a shiat about whether or not straights or queers marry. That is for the states. The feds are there to make sure bad guys die over there and the states don't rape each other/citizens.

As a proud libertarian, I'd be happy to see my tax dollars go to ensuring that a network of firebreaks are readily available for construction to ensure that no life or property is harmed by external forces. It all comes back to life, liberty and property.

Obama started the fires personally so that he could take out Focus on the Family and the Air Force Academy. Note that the AFA is the most Christian of the military academies. He's congratulating these men and women, but it's patently clear that he doesn't really want to.
