coffee smells good: cameroncrazy1984: patent holder: And yes, Colorado is a swing state, second to Virginia from what I read, in the advertising dollars Obama is spending.

[citation needed]

Why? Don't you know how to use google/bing/yahoo.....?

Typical loser can't make a logical (or funny) remark so the "citation needed" line drips out. IT WASN'T AN IMPORTANT POINT IN HIS/HER POST YOU DOPE!!!!!

Is it apparent that I'm one of those tired of posters not being able to put anything of value in threads but want to see their name on the interwebs? Kinda like having someone talk just to hear their own voice.

Better cut back on the caffeine Junior, and definitely don't get behind the wheel until you calm down.

BTW you can just ignore the citation needed posters if they bother you that much.

firefly212: the Goldwater wing of the Republican party died with the inclusion of the Moral Majority people... libertarians are probably the second most underrepresented demographic segment in congress, second only to people with ethics.

FARKING THIS.

Not only did we get completely cut out of our own party, the definition of 'Libertarian' then got co-opted into a different meaning entirely. Now its generally used to self-describe these odd hyper-authoritarian pseudo-fascists with either theocratic or racialist (remember kids, they aren't 'racist' (thats bad), they are 'racialists' (thats good)) foundations, pushing for extreme government intrusion and control into personal and religious decisions in an attempt to enforce a monoculture.
How that became 'Libertarian' is beyond me.

Don't post unsourced crap and people won't call you out on it. Seems pretty simple to me.

Misinformation deserves to be shouted down, no matter how small it might be.

Doubt if it's "misinformation" as you claim (citation on your part please showing it's incorrect.)

Because you must not be well read, VA & CO are two of the larger states to be considered swing states this cycle and Obama is spending his money faster than Romney. Thus the comment does not seem outrageous so "Shouting him down" seems childish doesn't it?

The USFS does not need more planes and helicopters to fight fire. It needs more boots on the ground. Instead of increasing their budget to build and operate more support vehicles, they should spend that money on being able to keep more of the hard working firefighters working year round (with health insurance).

As someone that is still evacuated from this fire: exactly THIS

The C-130s, Skycranes and CV-580s were pounding that ridgeline behind my house ALL DAY LONG on Tuesday. The fire still came racing down the hill that afternoon. Dozers and axes should have been used, not aircraft.

I'm informed enough to understand Obama didn't give a crap about the CO wildfires until it was pointed out to his press secretary during the daily briefing that it was a swing state and he (POTUS) hadn't talked with that governor in a couple of weeks. I also saw how the media made a deal out of it that morning until a announcement was made that he would go to CO Friday then the story disappeared.

You can yell citation all you want but it shows you don't have a logical response to the president ignoring then politicizing a disaster.

FYI: Early primary and swing states get a bulk of the ad dollars spent by politicians. That's common knowledge it doesn't need a citation.

Moreover, during the early spring and late fall (when wildfire is less active and not stretching FF resources so thin) they should still be getting 40 hrs/wk doing fuels reduction and controlled burns.

Yes. In the middle of a national campaign, the President was totally unaware that CO was a swing state. [citation needed]

I ended up at the bowling alley. There were only two other people there: The manager and a female cashier. They had waited too long too. I wasn't much for bowling, but they did have a great arcade. I got a couple of rolls of quarters and started playing, Just as I finished off the last roll of quarters, a firefighter bust in through bowling alley's doors.

He was missing his headgear, along with half the hair on top of his head and and an eyebrow. You could barely tell what color his firefighting outfit was. And I swear to God that his ax was smoking. He then looks around, sees the female cashier, and walks up to her with a swagger that would make John Wayne envious.

"Fire's contained," he says to the girl, "Let's go get married."

And out of the bowling alley they ran.

firefly212: Be that as it may, the fire started and exploded in size on federal park lands... by the time it reached the springs, it wouldn't matter if they had a thousand firefighters or a hundred thousand... sometimes nature just wont take no for an answer.

It isn't just that anymore. During the last big fire where I used to live, every damned pyromaniac in the state showed up to help the thing along. There was a retarded man who was trying to hitchhike up the side of the mountain with a five gallon can of gas and a backpack full of road flares. There was another creep who was throwing flares from his motorcycle who wouldn't surrender and had to be shot dead. And then there's this piece of shiat who started the whole thing Link

Why do we insist that Presidents, and I don't care about party affiliation, must tour disaster areas to show they care?

It only slows down the efforts of those involved i the real work. Resources have to be diverted to deal with the President and his entourage. Personnel have to made available to give briefings, appear withe President for photo ops etc.

We have layers of overpaid government bureaucrats who are supposed to be handling stuff like this without the need for the President to be on site. But unfortunately if he does not go he is portrayed as uncaring instead of staying out of the way.

Geez.....couldn't keep Obama out of Texas in 2011 when 2800+ homes burned. It took him 70 days to partially approve the governors request for state of disaster. I do not wish anything but rain and prayers for the fine people of Colorado, but don't patronize anyone about Obama doing his visit as anything more than a photo op.

thisispete: Shouldn't there be regular controlled burn offs to prevent this sort of thing happening and promote new growth? Or is there too much forest, scrubland and unpredictable weather patterns to keep any burn off contained and under control?

The standing orders regarding wildfires for the longest time was to put them all out as quickly as possible. That combined with people building homes deep in forests and in the middle of nowhere who whine about controlled burns and small fires get ash in their swimming pools allowed dead trees and brush to build up instead of being cleared in small, quick, relatively cool fires. After years of buildup, there's tons of tinder-dry fuel waiting for that spark, and when it happens it explodes into a firestorm that's impossible to stop or contain.

Yellowstone, 1988. The textbook example of why preventing annual burns leads to disaster.

2012-06-30 01:21:27 PM

Coelacanth: Back in 1980, I was living in the mountaintop tourist community of Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino in Southern California. In November of 1980, a couple of days before Thanksgiving, one of the worst wildfires in California broke out. It was called the Panorama fire, and 286 houses and four lives were lost.

My family and I tried to leave the mountain as quickly as possible. But my mother flatly refused. She wanted to stand her ground. While my stepfather, stepsister and I loaded up the pickup trucks, she sat and watched TV and drank herself nearly blind. Some sheriff deputies finally showed up and told us to bug out. Trying to drive down the Rim highway was an ordeal. It felt like it took a million years and we didn't get that far. There was smoke and ash and embers fling everywhere. The fire was trying to jump the highway and into the community where it would've been impossible to stop.

The only thing holding back the fire was a line of firefighters. There were a few places where the highway narrowed, and you could look over the side, and down below there were the firefighters who looked like a gang of Archangel Micheal's mates holding the line against the forces of Hell.

We finally got to Crestline, and we were told that we couldn't go any farther and we couldn't go back. If the firefighters couldn't hold the line, we were pretty much boned. My mom owned a little soup and sandwich in Crestline, so we had a place to be. The rest of the town was pretty much abandoned. So I decided to walk down main street and see what else was going on.

I ended up at the bowling alley. There were only two other people there: The manager and a female cashier. They had waited too long too. I wasn't much for bowling, but they did have a great arcade. my brother was one of those firefighters. They were pullng people from desk jobs, outfitting them and sending them to help. He said it was like being in the aftermath of a nuclear explosion. Plus, many of those were seasonal firefighters, with near minimum wage, and no benefits.

There's no winning with you people. If he didn't go to Colorado, you would have been screaming "ZOMG FARTBONGO DOESN'T CARE!!!"

Is he the best president we've ever had? No. But he isn't the worst, either. Neither, was Bush, but that's a different matter.

What's your point, anyways?

There are 58 active wildfires in the US. Is he supposed to call for all of them? Or the 100's that happen in previous years?

CO evacuations began on Wednesday. He got out there by Friday. That's pretty damn fast with all the other shiat going on right now.

TsukasaK: firefly212: It's the first time in decades a sitting president has directly ordered the FAA not to clear airspace overhead.

Wait, what? They still put out a TFR for his visit. Unless it was greatly reduced from the standard one...

FAA TO ESTABLISH TFR OVER COLORADO SPRINGS, CO ON FRIDAY, JUNE 29
A NOTAM has been issued that will restrict flight in the area during
President Obama's planned visit.

==> 30 NM RADIUS TFR Location:
On the BUTTS VOR/DME (FCS) 007 degree radial at 7.9 nautical miles
From the surface up to but not including 18000 feet MSL

Times:
11:30 AM local until 4:00 PM local Friday, June 29, 2012

==> AFFECTED PUBLIC USE AIRPORTS
KCOS City of Colorado Springs Muni
KFLY Meadow Lake
A50 Colorado Springs East
5V4 Calhan
1V6 Fremont County
/i>

There were firefighting airplanes still flying over the whole time he was there, even during his press conference... I'm not sure if the aerial firefighting operations got a free pass on the NOTAM or what, but they definitely were flying overhead. Sorry for the late reply , I was up in Empire for a little bit.
