Stopped for gas at I-15 and 119 today and there was a giant billboard by the waffle house. It had a photo showing a silhouette of a firefighter working against a backdrop of a wall of flames and burning trees. The only text on it was the big white letters spelling out "Thank You"

It was pretty cool.

I would have loved to seen that.

Yep. Here comes big government to put out all of the fires that the local residents can't or choose not to put out for themselves. HOW WILL THESE PEOPLE EVER LEARN TO PUT OUT FIRES, POOPBAMA?!?!

If he hadn't cut the budget for equipping AC-130s with the fire fighting equipment we'd have hundreds of planes working instead of 8.

Damn Obama politicizing the tragedy in Colorado for his own ego. He's just grandstanding. He should have just stayed home instead of just showing up for a photo op. His being there diverts needed resources from the firefighters, so he's just making things worse by being there.

2012-06-30 02:11:03 AM
Obama wants more firefighters! The private sector is doing fine, okay! Obama is responsible for not spending enough on firefighting planes! Radical, socialist, communist, Marxist, Obamacare, blah-blah-blah...

But seriously, cheers to these guys. Obama's no gem, but you don't see Romney rushing to the scene (if only for a photo op). But what does it matter when you can just terrify the middle with millions and millions of dollars worth of ads?

Buncha union thugs? No wonder Obama considers them heroes. How many firefighters have ever taken down a member of the new black panthers? Zero! I wonder why....

I think Obama was actually in Maine. Lighting things on fire. And making fun of the local fire department. And is a Nazi.

I don't think they're going to be equipping AC-130s with anything but large caliber, direct fire weapons. You may be thinking of a C-130.

Except that the fleet of AC-130s equipped to handle firefighting using the necessary equipment before the budget cuts numbered...wait for it...eight. In other words, the same number of planes would be fighting the fire right now regardless of the cuts.

Oh, and the cuts haven't actually happened yet. Also, it cut 65 planes from a total of something like 400.

Obama started the fires personally so that he could take out Focus on the Family and the Air Force Academy. Note that the AFA is the most Christian of the military academies. He's congratulating these men and women, but it's patently clear that he doesn't really want to.

Whatever. The thing no one is catching is the need to eradicate the damn Mountain Pine Beetle. They eat the trees & leave them dead as matchsticks. Once the fires are through, Coloradans will be faced with catastrophic flooding & mudslides this summer as there are no trees to hold down the top soil.

That is exactly what I'm saying. The constitution makes it clear that the government is to provide for the general well being of the citizens. Not dying in a fire that can be contained falls under that. The main purpose of the Federal Government is to keep bad guys and bad things from killing it's citizens. Not stealing money from one group to give to another. Not to make sure Bank Rape stays in business. Not to give a shiat about whether or not straights or queers marry. That is for the states. The feds are there to make sure bad guys die over there and the states don't rape each other/citizens.

As a proud libertarian, I'd be happy to see my tax dollars go to ensuring that a network of firebreaks are readily available for construction to ensure that no life or property is harmed by external forces. It all comes back to life, liberty and property.

Cool. I've seen Republican idiots blabbering about how insensitive and attention-whoring it is for Obama to go there and back up traffic with his motorcade, and how the tax dollars spent on him being there should be spent on fighting the fires, as if it's being siphoned from those efforts. It's like they don't remember that the President visiting disaster zones is traditional. It has happened with every President and every disaster for a very long time.

We had the same problem in Southern California, except it was the Japanese Bark Beetle, same family as the Mountain Pine Beetle. They killed off so many trees in the San Bernardino Mountains, that the whole area was just waiting to go up in flames... and it did.

One is about saving lives due to external forces, one is about using taxation to change behavior. They are vastly different subjects. Subjects that I have no doubt will be debated (hopefully with integrity on both sides, especially mine) over the coming months and likely years.
