That shirt she has on reminds me of back in my helpdesk days. We had a user whose last name was Estes. His first name was Tim. Every time he called, whether I needed it or not I asked him for his username. He would get all pissed off and say that I knew it. I would say, "Come on Tim, what is it? I can't remember it." He would never give it to me.

/username was TESTES

Emposter: Begoggle: Not clicking because we know Fark thinks it's hilarious to say "smoking hot" and link to a she-beast.

She's not ugly, but certainly not blazing hot either. Clocks in at a 6 or 7, though the picture is pretty worthless. I suppose she could be a well disguised 8, but probably not.

It's almost like smitty was using "smoking hot" only because it's a pun on the fact that the story is about a fire.

So a cute little 18 year old is a firefighter. That's fine, I'm sure there will never be anyone bigger than her to carry out of a burning building for the rest of her career.

Actually was reading a different article and they think it may be arson, which of course with so much dry wood and near populated area wouldn't take long to burn a bunch of houses down.

Governor was quoted as being infuriated, not sure if that's the proper word choice searching for an arson. heh heh

I would make a comment online, alluding to having coitus with this woman; said comment would contain a pun, or play on words, which alludes to her chosen occupation as a member of a fire brigade. I would further describe any repeated thrusting and eventual ejaculation resulting from said coitus in a simile that compares my penis to a fire house and my ejaculate to a fire retardant liquid used to extinguish or cool some portion of her anatomy which is, for the purposes of the simile, hot or aflame in some manner.

Not much of a firefighter if she can't figure out why they wouldn't have her respond to her own house.

People don't function the way they are supposed to when they have a personal connection to the incident.

The rookie firefighter sprang into action while home and seeing flames spread from house to house in her Estes Park neighborhood, incinerating trees in its wake. She raced around with her garden hose, shouting for neighbors to get out of their houses and turn their hoses on

How can she be a fire fighter and NOT realize that this part is immensly stupid? You CANNOT fight a wildfire with a garden hose. If your home is going to be toast, with fire all around it, a garden hose will NOT help you.

Anywhere there are trees, or wild grass, there can be an uncontrollable fire. One on the plains of Colorado last week grew to 34,000 acres, and there's only plains grass in that area.

I know a handful of women who are wildland firefighters and they don't look much more muscular than the woman from TFA. OTOH, they can build fireline in circles around the average structural ff all day...in 100F weather...on a 75% slope.

Yeah, women aren't physically strong, but they can work all day.

2012-06-29 09:21:37 AM

robohobo: Soooo...there aren't any physical requirements to be a firefighter anymore? Cause I doubt this broad is strong enough to lift a 200 pound guy and carry him to safety.

The majority of firefighters in the US could not do that. Most are volunteer. Many volunteer departments also do medical and have train local nurses as firefighters mostly so they can help with medical calls or drive tankers.
TFA didn't say what department she was in. I'm sure smokejumpers have much more stringent requirements.
Also, there's a lot of fatasses that weigh much more than 200lbs these days.

Also the whole "NEVER LET ANYTHING BURN EVER" mentality kind of came back and bit us. There are cyclic events in nature that keep everything in balance. Like the flooding of the Nile kept the land fertile, so when you dam it up and stop that the land becomes a bit more useless.

A common tactic during wilfdires is to soak your house as well as you can, in an attempt to keep flying embers from spreading the fire to your house. Not saying its a good idea, but I dont think they were trying to put out the wildfire, so much as prevent their houses from catching.

... and not to be sexist, but my wife is actually a volunteer firefighter and in my experience they put the women in charge of things like "securing the scene" and directing traffic a lot more than they actually let them put the wet stuff on the red stuff, or go dragging people out of houses.

All the rest of you pricks should take notice and learn.

Larmer: robohobo: Soooo...there aren't any physical requirements to be a firefighter anymore? Cause I doubt this broad is strong enough to lift a 200 pound guy and carry him to safety.

There's still this myth that every competent firefighter is going to be able to effortlessly haul out a fat sweaty obese unconscious guy all on their lonesome... If you're in a situation where you're interior and have to haul someone out on your own, you've already screwed up cause you've lost the other member(s) of your team. Trying to do this while bunkered up, on SCBA, in a hostile environment is just unrealistic.

For what it's worth, a third of my department is female, and I'd go in with them, and have gone in with them, in a heartbeat. I'd rather be with them than the 45 year old overweight guy with a heart condition that can deadlift a metric ton.

Chick above is also wildland, not structural from the looks of it, so moot point anyways...

The last grab I made was a little old lady who couldn't have weighed more than 120. It took everything my partner and I had to drag her out. It was a hot one and we were pinned to the floor. I can't see very many women being particularly helpful with that event.

I've worked with women before, and none of them is at the bottom of the list of who I'd like to work with. There are far too many fat, useless men at the bottom. But none of them is right at the top, either. The best woman I've worked with is nowhere near the best man in any respect: strength, speed, instinct or daring.

As for working with a "team," not everyone has that luxury. I have routinely been by myself in fires, either because I started off alone or because we intentionally split up. It's the life you lead in the land of 3-man pumpers and 2-man trucks. It isn't safe, it isn't accepted practice for most of the service, but I could be doing my job 100% right and need to rescue a 250 pounder by myself.

NWCG Wildfire firefighters (Type II FFs) have different physical requirements more aimed at getting the fark outta the way as fast as possible and being able to endure long distance hiking (i.e. being able to haul arse up and over the mountain when told to). They aren't so much for saving lives directly.

The main one is being able to walk 3 miles in 45 minutes with a 45 lb pack. (not run, they watch and will disqualify you...has to do with a foot always being on the ground) It's harder than you think, especially if you have a short inseam like myself. I was in really good shape when I was first certified and I believe it still took me almost 35 minutes.

You have other qualifications like being able to deploy and get inside an emergency personal fireshelter within a certain amount of time.

Being deployed on a fireteam (especially the national call teams, like mine) is no joke. AT LEAST two weeks of "camping" in the hot-arse-fiery woods....lots and lots of hiking and maual labor every day 12-16 hours often.

tetsoushima: Hydra: Are you confused as to why so many people live in New Orleans (which is one huge floodplain)?

Yes, in fact I am.

So neither of you will live in places with lots of trees or grass or brush...and tetsoushima has added valley bottoms to the list of unlivables....

I guess neither of you have earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis or hurricanes to worry about either?

Looks like we outta all move in with you guys...lest we get "disastered"
