I wasn't really trying to be callous, really, but what more can you say based on what's in TFA?

/I can't help but think that there's more to this story

I have to agree, I mean, he was in jail for a misdemeanor possession charge, so, it wasn't like he was some hard felon in for years. This might have been something he'd have done outside of jail as well.... probably had some mental issues.

Robert Rodriguez, 29, was found unconscious and bleeding... It appears there were self-inflicted wounds from a plastic spoon he had made sharp and used to stab himself.

Well, at least that means no more 'Spy Kids' movies.

Your cornhole is only as tough as your pride. At some point, you're going to have to give it up. There's no shame in it.

Just because you're getting farked in the butt doesn't mean you're gay or that you have to enjoy it. It's just a survival tactic. Like eating bugs or making injurious statements about your country and President. No one will fault you. It's not worth killing yourself over.

I like how they mention that he was "not on suicide watch" as if to say it wouldn't have mattered if he was.

misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and possession of a controlled substance? What, probably a little weed?
Why was this guy in farking prison to begin with for that crap?

2012-06-29 07:14:48 AM
I've had one (female) try to cut her breasts off with sharpened spork, another (male) try to hang himself with a noose made from his own clothing. Had another one open a vein with a little ID badge clip. The list goes on. Take away everything they have and put them in a paper gown and they will smash their head into the wall until you ask them nicely to stop. If they went to make an attempt (or just cry out for help/attention), they will do it, no matter what you do to intervene.

They teach us that people facing long sentences, etc are more likely to make an attempt. Doesn't mean it is always the case. The three I mentioned were all short timers. One was only a day or two from going home. Another was within a week or so. Sometimes the fear of leaving prison is worse than going to prison to begin with.

[25.media.tumblr.com image 500x375]

1. Knifey Spoony 31 up, 10 down
A game Australian in origin. Two opponents challenge each other to a comparison of knife blades, to determine who has the greater knife. When knives are to be produced, one player actually produces a spoon. If the opposing player correctly identifies it as a spoon, she/he wins the match.
"THIS is a knife!"
"That's not a knife; that's a spoon."
"All right, you win. I can see you've played Knifey Spoony before!"

Completely agree, it's amazing what an offender can do when they want to harm themselves.

People think the stuff Macgyver or the A-Team can make is incredible, leave an inmate alone for twenty minutes with virtually nothing, you'll come back to search the cell and find weapons and tools made from stuff you didn't think possible.

Man the weird shiat I've found shaking down cells, it will amaze people.

Maybr this was the complete repudiation of Bubba on the top bunk spooning him every evening?

2012-06-29 09:27:49 AM
well.. couldn't happen to a better buncha folks?

seriously though.. not good to permit inmates to potentially turn these weapons on one another.

"Potentially"

Ah yes, the word which means "It hasn't happened, but could happen" I'm all for prevention, but maybe somethings are better tried AFTER the fact?

Or you know.. cut the food in the kitchen and give everyone finger foods.. though it wouldn't be long before someone sharpened a fingernail.. and then we'd outlaw fingertips.

Sorry, but I'm not buying this story. Either the cops beat this guy or some other inmate killed him. They are manufacturing this plastic spoon stabbing story to prevent their jail from being investigated for failure to protect inmates.

2012-06-29 09:47:11 AM
Guns don't kill people, small plastic spoons kill people ...

... with great difficulty, and very seldom. For wholesale slaughter, use an automatic. They're easy enough to get anywhere, even in prison.

Remember, when spoons are banned, only Nazis and outlaws will have soup.

Goes to show - if someone is knowingly being raped against their will in prison (and we call it PMITA prison for a reason), we know that we're submitting prisoners to cruel and unusual punishment. There's no way around that.
Also, prisoners are constantly on suicide watch, citizens are not. Anyone heard of principle of least eligibility?
Our prison system is archaic and needs a major overhaul before it starts costing some serious class action money.
