Subby here. I'm actually rather surprised at the ruling; I expected the only real question to be whether the mandate was severable. But no, I'm not gnashing my teeth and tearing out my hair. We'll see how well the bill works now in real life.

But the reason I submitted this is because gloating like that is just plain undignified, and doggone if I don't wish politicians on both sides of the aisle to show the same decorum as, say, a Little League team that just won.

As one of those aforementioned cocktards, let me just say that A. I thought it was silly of the president to go beg for his country to host the Olympics, B. I don't really care where they hold the Olympics, and C. I was, however, impressed that Obama told the crowd to stop booing at Romney.

Like I said, there's no reason a politician can't show some class.

IIRC Obama's the first president in history to actually ask the Olympic committee to host the games in the US. That's not his job, if you ask me. I just thought it was undignified. He at least could have sent someone else on the nation's behalf or something.

To me that was like if the president appealed a referee's call in a basketball game that was against his hometown team.

They were cheering because THIS president DID get involved, and they want him to fail in EVERYTHING he does. And they will disregard whether it is good for the country completely in their hatred for everything he does.

Romney's only viable argument against it was the individual mandate at the national level. That is no longer a viable argument. It passed Constitutional muster. He no longer has the magic exemption that the Massachusetts Constitution permitted it.

All this shows to me is that everyone is pretty much the same. Republicans did it in the Wisconsin recall thread and now Democrats are doing it in the Obamacare thread. I wish things would be more civil but maybe that is not who we are as a populace. "They do it so we are going to do it too" seems to rule the day.

He has a stronger argument now. He can say that he has to be elected to repeal it because it is wrong to the Federal Government to force this on the States even if it is Constitutional.

If it would have been shot down: a) he would still have to defend his public mandate solution at the state level b) would lose credibility as the person to pass true reform c) would really be put on the spot to indicate what he will do

Absent a nationalized individual mandate, how do you propose we pay for the health care needs of the of the uninsured? Why should responsible taxpayers pay for the care of the uninsured?

The revenue is high, the net profits are debatable (most people don't figure in all the maintenance needed for the facilities after they're built, security, hell, money spent bribing the IOC to have it in their country, etc). There's a lot of now-unused Olympic facilities out there.

Because DC is bad. Federal Government bad. Big Government bad. State's rights sells well to his base and even to some Independents. The mandate was always a weakness in his campaign but not any more so after this ruling. It being overturned would have been much trickier for him to deal with IMHO. Not really sure.

I don't see this as a victory for either Obama or the DNC. Perhaps a vindication. Mostly it is just a complete failure of the tea party and that is why it gives me a happy.
