Canada: Universal health care, higher taxes, higher gas prices, stricter environmental regulation, legal same-sex marriage, a puny underfunded military, severe gun control, and no restrictions on abortion whatsoever.

Come on up, US Conservatives. Don't forget to buy some cheap duty-free Depends on your way, you're gonna need them.

With regards to the mandate, the individual responsibility program which I proposed, I was very pleased to see that the compromise from the two houses includes the personal responsibility principle, that is essential for bringing health care costs down for everyone, and for getting everybody the health insurance they deserve and need. So I was very pleased with that development. -Mitt Romney

The ironic thing is that they are correct despite their ignorance. The Conservative Party of Canada has schemed and duped it's way to a majority government here, all while taking notes from it's Republican neighbours and being very successful at reversing and halting much of the progress Canada is ostensibly famous for in those areas.

Canada's own right wing has been undermining, sabotaging and cutting public healthcare every chance they get for decades now. The ruling Cons are also no where near open to legalizing marijuana or any other recreational drugs despite public and other political support for it. And the former Liberal government's Civil Marriage Act legalizing same-sex marriage nationally was obviously immediately challenged by the Cons, though the 123 Con votes to try to ruin it failed, and, while they have put the issue on the back burner, they are not beyond reopening the issue in the future as evidenced by their later back-door attempt to undermine equal spousal rights for same sex couples through the supreme court.

I've also heard China is nice this time of year, especially with their mysterious smog.

And in China you don't have to worry about the Supreme Court deciding whether laws are constitutional or not since they have no judicial review. Not only that, but the supreme court justice who tried to operationalize the constitution got himself thrown in jail on "bribery" charges (surprise, surprise) not long after the decision got rescinded, which serves as a pretty good warning not to try that again.

No, they have a great hybrid. Single payer that is taxpayer funded. Hospitals and doctors are not government employees like they are in the UK(true socialist health care), they are free market businesses that just happen to get paid mostly by the government ran healthcare system. The ones that provide better service are more likely to see more patients - since citizens can go see any of them.

People are also free to purchase supplemental medical insurance to cover things their single payer plan will not. Yes, that is the health care we SHOULD have. It is superior to Obamacare - but at least this is still a step forward.

Yes, these people moving for this reason are truly hilarious. I work at a pharmacy, so today at work should be fun with all the derp.

jigger: So between 2006 and 2011 your insurance premiums didn't shoot through the roof like everyone else's in MA?

no, they are exactly the same now as they were when i moved here in 2007. only difference is i upgraded to a more inclusive plan which charges me more in 2011 after i decided i was starting to get older and wanted better access to specialists covered, but that was my choice. That said, i get my coverage through my employer, who are very large and have a lot of negotiating power with the insurance companies. I'm not sure i would have been as lucky if i was with a smaller company.

Obamacare? That's some sort of plan where people who can't afford the outrageous premiums for private healthcare can actually see a doctor, right? Sounds awful to me.

And we don't have free healthcare in Canada. Every province is different.

For example, this year, when I did my taxes, I had to pay my Ontario Health Insurance Plan premium. It came to $450.00. For the YEAR.
