Nina_Hartley's_Ass: vygramul: Nina_Hartley's_Ass: Uh, is it just me or did Boehner and Cantor just punt?

Well, they put all their chips on the roulette wheel space marked "unconstitutional" and now they have to buy some more chips and decide what space to play next.

Yeah, but...really? Literally months to prepare and NO time spent on plan b? Just that one guy who accidentally posted his speeches to youtube? He's looking like a genius now.

As a followup, has he posted he's video related to this particular outcome?

Voiceofreason01: jigger: So Roberts said that the fine was not a tax for purposes of the Anti-Injunction Act, but now contradicts himself and says that indeed it is a tax in order to uphold the mandate, because otherwise it would be facially unconstitutional. Is there any decision made by John Roberts that is not pro-corporation?

because he was just making stuff up for the lulz, it's not as if he had reasons for the way he decided or anything

It seems that what they all do. They don't seem to root any of their decisions in any kind of principle or at least any kind of consistent standard. I mean this isn't a contradiction after decades of case law or new circumstances. This is a contradiction within the very same case.

Dalrint: I was surprised at first, but the more I think about it the more I realize I shouldn't have been. The Roberts Court was heading into being considered one of the worst courts in American History by constitutional scholars. Citizens United is already considered one of the worst decisions ever made by a Court, in fact.

Roberts didn't want his legacy to be 'selling politicians to corporations and denying poor children heath care.' Legacy means almost everything to these people.

It might be a bad decision because of the ends, but as far as the Constitution is concerned, if you consider actions speech(which the court have for many many years), it's the most valid decision.

I just hope more Republicans think like the Freepers who are convinced that the Republican Party is somehow progressive and why should they bother going out to vote if that is the case?

No offense, American conservatives, but you are killing the country. Please stay home on November 9th.

/That's when the polls are open.
//Really.
///Trust me. It's the 9th.

Also, other people pay for them NOW. That was part of the problem.

I dont have a team. Im libertarian, so I dont believe that government should be involved in everything, so Im for Gay Marriage, abortions, drug legalization... Basically anything that reduces the governments role in private decision making, but if we as a society decide that we need government to provide a service for us, I think that government should take it over, hence either provide public health insurance or public health care, and distribute the costs equally across all segments of society.

Personally, beyond the taxation concept, Im not really sure why libertarians would support the Republican party.

Because, y'know, it's not like he did the same thing for Mass when he was governor.

According to him (back then) it was his IDEA!

"With regards to the mandate, the individual responsibility program which I proposed, I was very pleased to see that the compromise from the two houses includes the personal responsibility principle, that is essential for bringing health care costs down for everyone, and for getting everybody the health insurance they deserve and need. So I was very pleased with that development." -Mitt Romney

Morals are funny.

My Dad has cancer. It's a very aggressive cancer. After the first 3 months of chemo, they just did another pet scan the other day and found out that it is not shrinking... They're not sure what to do now because the insurance company doesn't want to pay for another scan like the first two... And it's costing him alot of the money that worked so hard for all of his life... Average cost is about $5000...
Since your so into all of this, could you please send me $5000 so I can make sure my Dad get's the scan that is deemed proper??? Thanks and glad you saved him..

Roberts surprised me. He surprised me in that he didn't read his own opinion. His opinion basically says that congress not only has the power to tax, but the power to tax individuals arbitrarily.

His decision seems to say that Congress decides what lifestyles are and are not fair to tax. Where does this line of reasoning end? "Oh, you haven't voted in the last election, that's another 1% on your tax bill."... "Oh, you didn't exercise regularly this year, that's another 1% effective tax rate."... "Oh you didn't purchase anything on Amazon this year, that's another 1%"

You might look at my hyperbole and be dismissive, but that's essentially the door that Roberts opened. He opened the door to most any individual lifestyle and/or individual financial decision to be taxable.

Very bad decision. I don't mind health care, I don't even mind government-run health care. Just for farks sake, let the individual opt-out of it, let individual freedom rule over this stupid legislation that wasn't even read.

Ned Stark: Obama's reelection is assured, major Republican victories in 16 and 18 likely as log term effects of bill become apparent. You read it here first.

There will still be a Republican party in 2018? Bwhahahahahahaha

Heck, it's even money that they'll be a factor in 2016. Democrats have stopped playing to the left, and are now the party of the center. Political talent in the Republican party is being buried under fundamentalism. If you spell out their platform in so many words, normal people call it psychopathic. And even the kool-aid drinkers are starting to ask... "LOL WHUT?"

Reagan saved the party from itself back in 1980. And he did so by breaking from what Republicans used to do and do something new. Now all the Republicans want is someone like Reagan, but who won't change anything. And who will forward the fundamentalist agenda.

ModernPrimitive01: Let me tell a story about why this is a good thing: 15 years ago my mother got cancer. She fought hard and won. Complete remission/surgery to remove lumps. Immediately after her surgery she was dropped from her insurance. Following her cancer, she continued to work (ran her own restaurant) but was not able to purchase health insurance. She tried everywhere, was willing to pay huge sums of money, but not a single insurer would give her a plan due to "preexisting conditions." 3 years ago she started to recognize the signs that something was wrong. She went for a blood test and boom, she had cancer again, but couldn't get it treated. Her only option was disability, something she had avoided last time because she wanted to continue to work. It took 2 years for her to get disability by that time her previously treatable cancer had become stage 4 terminal cancer. She is continuing to fight, about to start her 4th round of chemo/radiation. If she was able to get insurance before this happened not only would there be a good chance they could have cured it, but it would have been less expensive for the entire health care system. I'm telling that story to every idiot that says something stupid about the ruling today.

Please tell your mother that some woman over on the left side of the continent said "Kick cancer squarely in the balls and while it's rolling on the floor puking, stomp it's head in" and then give her a hug for me.

Not exactly. This does nothing regarding forcing people to pay their bills and not ignore their medical bills. At all. It is still perfectly allowable to elect not to pay an emergency room medical bill or to not give the emergency room your insurance information,

Plus, it does nothing regarding the huge problem in southwestern states of non-resident aliens being a primary cause of the problem you're complaining about.

I'd go with an old CVE. Better gas mileage.

I am pretty sure the old carriers used fuel oil that's why the blew up so spectacularly , and I know the new ones we build are nuclear.

I am also pretty mariners do not do things in miles? Fathoms for up and down as I recall, but on the horizontal plane? (never been on anything bigger than a raft)

Also if you have a carrier, why do you need to worry about gas mileage, worse comes to worse you hire Dennis Hopper and horde of unfortunates to row your ass around the seven seas.

Old carriers blowing up spectacularly was due to the large amount of explosives on board, something nuclear carriers also suffer from. It's one of the inherent problems with warships. Old-school British battleships used to have basically open corridors from their main batteries to their magazines (in the interest of firing rapidly) and there were serious problems with catastrophic explosions after what would normally be a glancing hit on a turret.

Horizontal measure in marine parlance is in knots, which is a bit longer than a normal mile.
