NateGrey: Republicans keep saying this is a huge tax increase.

I have Employer paid health insurance.

How much is the tax I will have to pay Contards?

/Listening to Glenn Beck currently

And by law your employer has to continue that? Nice normalcy bias you got there Lou.

To everyone out there blasting this decision especially you tea party people, consider how much money your super PACs will soak in off of this. Karl Rove will be rolling in unlimited contributions from billionaires to set up the political system to do their bidding. There, now don't you feel better? Rail against socialism and you will get what they actually have in Russia now, an oligarchy. You should be praising Justice Roberts, he gave you just what you wanted, a government of the rich, by the rich and for the rich. Awesome!

So when does Romney go out and say that the health insurance plan that is modeled on his health insurance plan is bad because .... but his health insurance plan that's the same as this plan is good because of .....
I swear it's worse than rooting for sports teams. Their team hits your quarterback and you scream "late hit! open your eyes ref!". Your team hits their quarterback and it's all "let 'em play! part of the game! crybabies!"

Mentat: Jjaro: Kennedy went right and Roberts went left? That's surprising.

And are the liberals on Fark and the op-eds around America going to stop complaining about how biased and partisan the Supreme Court is now?

No, because this is still the same SCOTUS that thinks money = speech.

Well, it is. Just ask all the people on my Facebook feed who posted things like "This ruling just led me to donate $100 to Romney." They are speaking with their wallet.

MasterThief: Seems like the left got the result they wanted (law and mandate upheld), while the right got the reasoning they wanted (Congress doesn't get a blank check to pass laws under the commerce/necessary and proper clauses, and can't force states to comply with a federal regulation by threatening existing federal funding.)

I'm not happy that Roberts fell for a bait-and-switch on the tax argument, but aside from that, not much to criticize. And just because a law is Constitutional doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Well, in a way, Congress did get a blank check to shiat all over people without the Commerce Clause. They probably can't use this methodology to shiat all over states, but now the Federal government has bypassed the states, so they'll just target the people instead.

2012-06-28 11:23:11 AM
Now, the missing piece: the public option, like a Medicare for younger folks.

Then, people are all covered by something, at least, and then can opt to buy into a private insurance system if they want.

The best model for the public option? It's successful, expanding, and just sitting there waiting to be further implemented....

If you don't have health insurance, when you file your taxes, you'll have to pay a bit more or receive a little less.

So wait...

Currently I'm working two jobs that don't provide healthcare. My kids are covered, but my wife and I are not. Healthcare is not very affordable at the moment for my wife and I. Will this make healthcare more affordable at all? Or am I going to be stuck with a $400+ a month paying for a private healthcare company? If so, then this bill sucks. I got just slapped with an expensive car payment.

Here's a clue: health insurance is not health care. All "universal" or "single-payer" systems work by rationing care. You want treatment for your rare cancer? Some government bureaucrat will determine that the treatment isn't cost effective, and you will either die waiting for it, or you'll never be given the chance. Not only do you end up dead in that scenario, but new and innovative treatments never get developed because said bureaucrat won't pay for them. Oh, but you have "free" health insurance - just not free health care.

How is this different from the insurance provider making those same decisions?

to a true believer in the GOP, it's an HONOR to be f*cked over by a corporation. you pray for that shiat to happen 'cause it means you just got to participate in the Free Market.

granted, that's rather insane and somewhat stupid...but that's what the GOP really believes.

Yeah I'm amazed how many people forget that this is a government created for the people by the people. Heaven forbid we want to pool our resources/risk to get the best possible return for our healthcare investment.

The Supreme Court says he lied.

Romney's donations box just got even bigger. Obama is going to have make more trips to George Clooney's house to try and keep up.

Actually, the second argument used by the DoJ lawyers was that it was a tax, which is the argument the court accepted.

Keep on failing.

HulkHands: Local Man: Why does CNN have "Mandate Struck Down" tattooed on their front page...?

Because it was, technically. It cannot be upheld as lawful to force someone to buy insurance. But it can be upheld as a tax to encourage people to buy insurance

Which is all it was in the first place, despite much wailing and gnashing of teeth and semantic games to the contrary.

Unfortunately, almost everyone today derives their constitutional interpretation from their legal philosophy. That said, I will say that there are certainly more people who think it's a bad idea but grudgingly admit it is constitutional (like me) than people who think it's a good idea but is unconstitutional. Virtually everyone who thought it was unconstitutional described it as the biggest attack on freedom in the entire universe.

The private insurance model rations care as well, they just do it based on the profit motive. I don't know about you, but I would like the profit motive as far removed from health care decisions as possible.

Benjimin_Dover: HulkHands: Can't force you to have health insurance, but they can tax you for it

So this just exposes yet again how big of a liar Obama is. He repeatedly and forcefully told the US in public that this was in no means a tax while at the same time he has his lawyers argue in court that this IS a tax.

His campaign promise that he would not raise taxes on anybody earning over (what was it?) $250,000 has now just been verified by SCOTUS as a lie. He just raised taxes on the poorest of the poor. I wonder if Roberts intentionally gave the Repubes a campaign issue to hammer on Obama with.

Yeah, it's gonna be rough spending $96 extra a year.

I wonder who will be the first poor soul to be thrown in jail for choosing to feed themselves instead of feeding the insurance companies?

The courts shot down the expansion of Medicaid for the poor. Here in MD one does not qualify for assistance if they have any equity in things like their home, car, 401(k). So now if you loose your job you will be forced to decide between either food or jail if I'm reading this decision correctly.

I'm going to make some popcorn and sit back to watch it get real over the next couple of years. Anybody else want some?

2012-06-28 11:26:08 AM

vpb: Thunderpipes: Weird, Obama stated over and over this is not a tax. Now he argues it is.

At least they shot down the forced Medicaid expansion. That will throw a big wrench into his plans. 26 states can tell Obama and the Feds to suck it now, and they will.

Still scary. Means Congress can regulate your behavior via taxes. Vote Republican? Obama can impose a tax on you. Buy an American car? Obama can impose a tax on you. Christian? Obama can impose a tax on you.

Now liberals, if we get a Republican advantage, how about we implement a tax on the unemployed? No job? Fine, pay a tax. I know you think you just won, but you just screwed everyone equally with another erosion of individual rights.

That's kind of a retarded argument. People who don't have insurance are trying to get free care when they get sick at the expense of the rest of us. Trying to claim that there is some sort of principle involved is silly.

People who don't have a job are trying to get free money when they need to pay their bills at the expense of the rest of us. Same thing, Captain Silly.

Nevermind the political tie-ins, this is great for small businesses, but this sucks because of the socialism aspect. I work with quite a few people that abuse the medical system. Helicopter parents taking their kids to the docter at the slightest malady, and people who choose bad diet over taking care of themselves. Overall, I would say that this is a neutral thing for the economy, until it's determined how much taxes it ends up being for everyone people who pay taxes. I will never go to the doctor in my lifetime, so this is nothing but butthurt for me.

I hate Romney too, this hasn't guaranteed a victory for him, but people are going to think twice about Obama after this.

WombatControl: bdub77: Doesn't matter. Americans got health care. This is a win for the American people, not just Obama. Obama will now go down as the first president who got Americans health care. His legacy in that regard, not to mention countless other things he's done as president, will solidify him as one of the greats.

And yes I expect him to fully whip Romney's ass in November.

WHISKY. TANGO. FOXTROT.

Really? Now Americans have health care? You mean no one in this country had health care prior to Obama? Is this what you really think?

Here's a clue: health insurance is not health care. All "universal" or "single-payer" systems work by rationing care. You want treatment for your rare cancer? Some government bureaucrat will determine that the treatment isn't cost effective, and you will either die waiting for it, or you'll never be given the chance. Not only do you end up dead in that scenario, but new and innovative treatments never get developed because said bureaucrat won't pay for them. Oh, but you have "free" health insurance - just not free health care.

Nothing is free. Health care is not free, and it can't be made free by government fiat. If the liberals got their way we'd have a system in which everyone but the ultra rich who could afford private insurace (or black-market care) is stuck waiting in lines for treatments they may never get.

If the statists got their way and we magically had an NHS-style system in the United States there would be riots in the streets because Americans do not take kindly to the government dictating to them what they can and cannot have. At least those Americans who still believe in the spirit of this nation's Founding, anyway.

so except for the part where we are buying health insurance from the same healthcare companies we always have been.

who said anything was free? why are you just making things up? Troll harder

the only bureaucrats that have tried to deny me healthcare in my life (yes, did the whole cancer thing) were the ones working at the healthcare company that I'd been paying for 10 years. it was cool that they took my money for a decade, but when i got sick and they tried to skip on the bill I had to fight them tooth and nail

thank god for the healthcare reform bill. the patient bill of rights will help keep any future cancer patients that have worked and payed for healthcare (like me) from trying to be kicked out the door when the fat cats decide they dont want to live up to their end of the bargain.

the only people getting free stuff around here seems to be the health insurance companies themselves. it's their constant fleecing of the public and their part in the ever climbing healthcare costs that made this bill necessary. conveniently enough they are also the ones that will benefit the most. (makes you wonder who this bill was really for)

you're whole post reads like a man living in a parallel world where things are kinda close to the way they are here, except where they are different in ever way shape and form.
