(Miami Herald)   UPS truck hits a tree, which peeled back the roof and sent the out-of-control truck careening through a guardrail into lake. And yes, there are pics   (miamiherald.com) divider line 78

Some residents said the truck sped into the bay without any screeches or swerving, possibly pointing toward failed breaks.

UPS spokeswoman Susan Rosenberg said an investigation will determine whether the crash happened due to mechanical failure or human error.

The second one. You have to be driving pretty damn crazy and fast to clip a tree and then go flying thru the air 100 feet into a lake.

The real cause was at the end of the story. Sailors and UPS drivers beware!

FTA: "She wasn't too worried at first. After all, this is Miami, and TV shows sometimes use picturesque sites like the Miami Shores bayside for action scenes. Then, she saw the sirens."

The weight of all the UPSes in the truck probably broke the breaks. All those batterise

Pffft..... We had an 18 wheeler careen off the highway, roll down the embankment and into a river. The good news... it spewed POPTARTS everywhere.

You did read the part where it said it ended up 100ft out because it floated there right? Those trucks are incredibly light and it probably only stopped because it caught something underneath.

That tree jumped right out in front of me and bit my car boy!

I don't know what's funnier. Dude doing the call-o-shame to headquarters to tell them he lost their truck, or the scuba diver they called in to inspect a truck standing upright in four feet of water.

More probably human failure on the part of the DOT not the driver. If the top of the truck hit the tree then it was not clipped to be of legal clearance above the roadway. I believe 14.5 feet is the requirement. All others must have signage and be published for truckers.

gweilo8888: the scuba diver they called in to inspect a truck standing upright in four feet of water.

They might have wanted a diver to check that it doesn't have a ruptured oil pan or fuel lines or something. If it did, they'd probably have to put protective booms around the thing for the environment.

still funny.

I came here to post "She wasn't too worried at first. After all, this is Miami," then read your bolded part and started giggling.

Between that, the "breaks," "transporterd," and a few other things, the UPS driver isn't the only failure in that story.

The guy over at our local U-haul rental told me that at least once a month, someone hits a low bridge with a U-haul truck and peels the roof off.

This is off-topic, but is something I've been wondering about for a long time...

Are there Farkers out there who, first thing every morning, start scouring Floridian news sites for Florida-related Fark content? Or does Florida just have an above-average amount of laughable/derpy/dumbass news that just happens to appear on Fark?

UPS also has a claims process for damaged items, she said.

Yeah. Good luck with that. UPS is almost as bad as FedEx when it comes to trying to get them to replace an item damaged by their driver.

"I saw the UPS truck in the bay, and I thought they were filming a scene from Burn Notice," she said.

Yeah, it floated out there, but as far as the impact being hard enough to peel back the roof ... I'm thinking the driver was entering data into his handheld thingy, glanced up when he started veering off the road, and panicked, punching the gas and clipping the tree before ending up in the water.

Typical young male driver!

Which reminds me, we need more close-up shots of the young male driver in wet, clingy shorts and T-shirt, the fabric stretching across his muscled shoulders and enormous, throbbing -- oh, wait, cold water ... never mind.

I'm wondering if the tree limb's clearance was 11'8".
