The free market will step in and correct this.

Since when has it been the mission of the USAF to act as a state or municipalitiy's fire department? Why can't Colorado be bootstrappy enough to do it itself? Why didn't Colorado's ANG buy firefighting C130s? Why is it that the DoD is now responsible for this kind of thing? Is the implication here that the government should consist exclusively of the DoD and they can then perform every imaginible service to communities?

At what point will the loyal opposition follow their own logic to it's inevitable conclusion?

I regretted voting for Bush when he crumpled like wet paper over our spy plane and pilots the Chinese were holding. Romney would shake his etch-a-sketch, cut a deal to sell them arms, and use the money to fund tax cuts for the rich.

Ironically, the U.S. Air Force Academy has also been evacuated, at the very time that Colorado desperately needs more Air Force C-130s to fight the massive fire.

Because the 18 year-old high school graduates fly C-130s.

Dude it's Colorado Springs.

The town that cut power to the street light grid in poor neighborhoods and trash pickup in public parks in the name of slashing taxes.

If any town anywhere doesn't get to whine about not getting federal help, they're it.

Not wishing doom or fire on anyone, just saying that the irony of it is kind of intense.

What's to do? Fire is part of the ecosystem there, just as being underwater every once in a while is part of the ecosystem of the Lower Ninth in New Orleans.

If the local government decided to be damn fools and allowed people to build in fire-prone areas, why is it any of Washington's problem?

However, of a current fleet of nearly 380 C-130s, only eight can be fitted with the MAFFS

Ok, so how do the cuts to the fleet affect these 8?

*crickets*

Thought so.

My father was an Air Force firefighter for most of his life, and retired as the Chief at McChord AFB. The reason they lend a hand to locals during major conflagrations is because if those fires get out of hand, it impedes the base's ability to do it's mission. You can't launch or land aircraft if the buildings at the end of the runways are all on fire and blowing smoke and ash all over the place. It is also the right thing to do.

Government spending is only bad when it's on things people need. When it's on expanding the organs of state violence there is never enough spending.

But Saint Ronald Reagan told us: "government is the problem"!

Just mail them copies of Atlas Shrugged and let them figure out how to put out the fires on their own.

"It means fewer planes will be available for possible conversion to the MAFFS configuration. And that means that as hundreds of houses burn in Colorado, only eight planes can be called upon to help the thousands of firefighters on the ground."

So cuts to the C-130 fleet in 2013 are the reason why only 8 C-130s have the MAFFS today?

As of 2010, defense spending took up 20% of the national budget. To put this in perspective, consider the fact that in 1938, at the height of German rearmament, 21% of the German budget went to the military. What I want to know is, when are we going to invade Poland? The defense budget should be drastically cut, it should be abundantly clear that national defense is not really the main concern of the DOD.

Fair enough, as far as it goes.

It is also the right thing to do.

In the short term, perhaps.

In the long term, fostering a false sense of security is a Really Bad Idea. people who build houses in fire-prone area should either pay up for the increased costs they're imposing on the Academy, not to mention local governments...or GTFO.

It's not the USAF; it's the Air National Guard, which, unfortunately falls under big Air Force.

On those Air Force cuts, and speaking as someone who was "selected for non-retention" (read: laid off as a result of a "reduction in force"), I am not surprised. Good news is, having gotten rid of me and a thousand other officers, they can probably afford to paint a F-22... by cutting firefighting, maybe they can afford a wing. Hazzah!

Is this the thread where people say fires are a natural part of the ecosystem and we've brought this on ourselves by not letting them burn naturally for the past howevermany years, completely ignoring that in the past few years, tons of pine trees have been turned into kindling by pine beetles, and that this was pretty much the driest spring ever in Colorado?

I'm pretty sure it's that thread.

Firefighting or not firefighting the one area of the Air Force budget I would not cut is strategic and tactical airlift. It is all about conventional force projection. Airlift always get the shorted in favor of the fighter mafia and bombers.

I think we should get rid of all our land based ICBMs as a money saving move and let our SLBMs and bombers be our nuke force. We do not need a triad.
