I think that's when the wind kicked up into the 50 mph range. I opened the laundry room door, into the open garage, and got hit with a bunch of ash. I closed the garage door and ran through the house closing the windows.
It was suffocatingly hot in there, and then it got dark -- and then there was an orange glow outside all the windows and a lot of gusty wind just blowing the ash around. Very creepy around that point... like being in a hell hole, I thought.
I said to my roommate, "This doesn't feel right -- we shouldn't be here." That's when the police drove by with bullhorns, telling us to evacuate.
