I don't get ESPN, but honestly I'm surprised I haven't heard more about this in the news today. I was watching the game at the bar and everybody's jaw dropped when it happened...

What kind of girly somersault was that?

They made Ozzie Smith stop because they were worried he'd hurt himself. Link

I think the most hilarious thing is that the most butthurt group of people in all this weren't Reds fans (or players) and weren't Brewers fans (or players).

They were Cardinals fans.

One of the staged "walk off win" celebrations the Brewers used to do.
To their credit, they seemed to have cut out the showboating, over the last year or so.

Still no cure for Nyger Morgan

The Cardinals stomping a mudhole in them on their own field in last year's NLCS might have had something to do with it.

Considering the whole back-story to that incident, one thing can be said in Aroldis Chapman's defense: the man does not make very wise decisions.

Given how strange injuries can be in Baseball (or any sport for that matter, but baseball seems special) I wouldn't want my athlete's doing anything that could open them up to injuries.

The somersaults were directed at Carlos Gomez.

If you look back to the game on 4/25/11 of last season, Gomez made a fine running catch on a ball hit by Jay Bruce. He then proceeded to do 2 somersaults in the outfield, while his team was down 7-1. The first one may have been a result of his momentum, but the second somersault was hotdogging for sure.
Video here

Flash forward a bit further to a matchup of Gomez v. Chapman. Chapman gets the K, Gomez tries to break the bat over his knee, and fails.

Tuesday night, Chapman (frustrated by his performances lately), K's Gomez in the 9th, and then finishes it with a K of the next batter. He then does the same 2 somersaults Gomez did the previous year. Partially out of joy, sure, but I'm pretty sure it was aimed directly at Gomez.

While I think the somersaults were no big deal, that is kinda stupid to do if it happened over a year ago, to a different player. Why didn't they do it the last time they beat them while striking out Gomez?

Yeah, it's a little strange. They're divisional rivals and this happened over a year ago. Why do it now? The most likely explanation is that Chapman has recently been blowing saves and giving up homeruns, and this was his first clean outing in about 2 weeks. It was 95% spontaneous celebration/relief, and *maybe* the history of Gomez' somersaults had ~5% influence on the situation.

Mr. Potatoass: Still no cure for Nyger Morgan

NLCS game 3 last year was fun, even in SRO. Morgan PH late in the game, then stayed in as a defensive replacement. Cards fans let him have hit when he came to bat, and fans in the bleachers and upper deck in left were hassling him for pretty much the rest of the game. Much to everyone's delight here, he went 2/12 with 4 strikeouts in the series--not very impressive when talking trash during the season and before the series.

CommiePuddin: I think the most hilarious thing is that the most butthurt group of people in all this weren't Reds fans (or players) and weren't Brewers fans (or players).

I'm trying to remember my Cards'-feuds-with-other-NL-Central-teams: did Phillips call the Cardinals whiny little biatches before or after Johnny Cueto kicked Jason LaRue in the face?

Oh, and, though I'm a Cards' fan, I actually don't have too much of a problem with his flips (though I might think otherwise if they'd come against St. Louis). It seems, though, that some fans and players in Milwaukee, as well as Chapman's manager and teammates (some of them, any way) do have an issue with it. I'm not sure a thread on a message board on a website owned by a newspaper in St. Louis qualifies as the best evidence for butthurt-ness. Listening to local sports talk radio this AM for about an hour total (at different points in the morning), I don't remember any mention of the incident.

Hmm, I follow the Reds pretty closely, sometimes listen to 700 WLW when they're talking Reds, and I didn't hear anything about this incident. Seems like a mostly insignificant moment that bugged a few players and was immediately rectified by said players and Dusty. Us fans are just hoping to get to the all star break with the division lead intact as a tough west cost road trip looms ahead. I couldn't care less about Chapman doing a stupid celebration, I'm just glad he got the save.

Also, consider he's been given a multi-year contract worth a nice bit of coin, and then add on to that he's being managed by Dusty Baker. The odds of injury go up exponentially on that factor alone.

I thought it was cool that he acknowledged the fans that were riding him, but what's not humorous (and I think Brewers fans and even his teammates last year could probably agree) is talking trash about a team, then doing pretty much nothing to beat them. I noticed the Brewers didn't unveil their "2011 NL Central Division Champions" banner to much fanfare with the Cardinals in town on Opening Day...
