This is getting kinda pathetic, Firefly fans. Soon you're gonna have to go sit with the Space:1999 fans.

I keep wondering whether or not I want to buy the DVD set; I've never seen Firefly. Is it all that, or is it just fanboyishness run amok?

Just check it out on netflix. It's pretty decent. It's not quite the supergreatawesomeamazing show some of the fanboys make it out to be, but it is good. The character interaction is top notch, and there's plenty of genuinely funny and touching moments throughout the show.

2012-06-27 06:56:40 PM
Look, I liked Firefly too. But it's never coming back. No matter how much you want it to, it's not going to happen.

Seeing some fans continually hoping for a revival that is never going to happen is pretty sad.

The show was great, yes. It is also over. It's time to let it go and move on.

Never heard of it.

It's OKAY. It deserved a second season; some time to flesh out its universe and story lines and so forth.

But as it stands, it's not the end-all, be-all of sci fi television.

I will simply never understand how so many view a half season of an above average space western as some sort of pinnacle of science fiction. I've watched all the firefly episodes and they were good, but not enough to justify the fan obsession. I honestly believe that the legend of firefly is entirely due to it's cancellation. The fact that the subsequent episodes were never made allows people to just imagine that they would have been the greatest thing ever and work from that assumption.

Then again rabid Firefly fans make a hell of a lot more sense to me than rabid Farscape fans. That show was god awful. It amazes me that anyone out of their teens could sit through multiple episodes of that show willingly. It was teen fantasy in space, and I guess I'll take western in space over that any day.

Both, really. It's good enough that many fans are unable to contain their excitement over the show and want to share it with anyone and everyone, unfortunately doing it in such a way that leads to hype-aversion and hype-backlash.

It's fanboyishness run amok. I'm not a hard core sci-fi fan, though. I like my sci-fi genre mixes to be a lot more subtle. The Western influence wasn't blended well with the future.

Its on NetFlix. I only saw them for the first time a few weeks ago. I thought it was good and had great potential. I think it was the potential that has all the fanbois frothing at the months.

Science Channel or SyFy will undoubtedly run another marathon of all the episodes at some point. It's an entertaining show, but not one you'll want to watch over and over again (well, except perhaps for the parts with a younger, slimmer Christina Hendricks in them).

I liked it Firefly, and the first 2 seasons of Farscape.

After that, it got bad.

I'll go if I get the chance to punch Alan Tudyk in the balls for his role in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. What was he, a half-Dutch, half-French bodyguard/hacker/butler?

Not much of a scifi guy,
but loved "Firefly" and the movie "Serenity."

Whoever was reponsible for its cancellation is an ass

Wow that's depressing. All snark and jokes aside I really wish they would pull a Futurama with it and start making episodes again. Why doesn't Netflix do the same with Firefly like they did with arrested development?

I'm not a Whedon fanboy by any means, but I did enjoy the hell out of the dvd set, and had a sad when I burned through all the episodes. I don't watch a lot of tv, but this one brought many a smile to my face, and still does when the ocassional quote or reference turns up online. So many good lines in that show.

For example, I damn near hurt myself after watching this scene.

And while I'm straight, I'll freely admit to having a man crush on Nathan Fillion.

That was one of the best thought out bits. Today on earth there are cities with fibre broadband and Starbucks that are a few hundred miles from peasants growing rice with oxen plows, and its always been that way. Why would the future be different?
Six shooters and horses are more reliable, easier serviced and supplied and easier to make on a frontier than laser guns and hover cars, and the clothes are suited to the environment.
It's Star Trek that is unrealistic with monoculture planets and societies, but we accept that while thinking Firefly "unrealistic" when it's the better thought out show.

If you have Netflix, watch it there first. I recommend starting with "Shindig" or "Our Mrs. Reynolds", and then starting back at the beginning. The Pilot is a little slow, since they have to introduce everyone. The best episodes, in my opinion, are the two mentioned above, "Jaynestown" and "Out of Gas".
