farkinfilipino: platedlizard: CravenMorehead: "a blend of species"? Perhaps they should have looked up what a "species" is first.

This just in, closely related species often can interbreed.

to clarify, wolves (Canis lupus) and domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) are considered two separate species. a wolf/dog blend would be a blend of species.

the various domestic dog breeds are all considered as the same specie, Canis familiaris.

Not anymore. Last time I checked the taxonomy, scientists who do things like this (i.e. fuss over the distinction between species) were calling them all Canis lupus, and house dogs were being called C. lupus familiaris, a subspecies of C. lupus.

Funny that right now, "Dog Whisperer" is doing a show on wolf-hybrids, and folks, they ARE NOT DOGS. They're wolves, and anyone who has a wolf-hybrid needs to understand that. Apparently there's a big problem suddenly of wolf-hybrids being abandoned by their owners who couldn't cope with having a wild animal instead of a tame dog.

Personally I like the theory that that thing was some kind of super furry hyena that somehow got loose in 14th Century France.
