How to tell a wolf from a dog:

http://www.dogsled.net/wolfdog_comparison.htm

I would say from the eye placement that this is a dog. Most of the other criteria for distinguishing a wolf from a dog are not visible. The eyes appear to be brown, but this does not distinguish a wolf from a dog. Dogs sometimes have blue eyes, presumably for the same reason that humans have mutated to have blue eyes. All in all the animal seems to be smaller and cuddlier than a wolf or wolf-dog hybrid would be. It looks quite harmless, in fact, although even friendly animals will bite if frightened or provoked.

to clarify, wolves (Canis lupus) and domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) are considered two separate species. a wolf/dog blend would be a blend of species.

the various domestic dog breeds are all considered as the same specie, Canis familiaris.

FTA: laid traps in the woods and fed the animal a tranquilizer-laced hot dog

I tried that once instead of a roofy, but she didn't take the 'bate, perhaps because she was little and wore a riding hood (red). I huffed but she didn't puff.

This was our hybred. Not sure if that term is correct or not but that's how we described her. Not sure how much wolf she had in her but it was enough that when you looked at her, it was very obvious. She passed away a little over 10 years ago and was one of the best pooches we ever had. She looks small in this image but was fairly large. She is setting my son's little pit in his place in this image and was up in age at this time. The Pit is still alive and was a damn good dog too. He's now almost blind in both eyes and had a little stroke about a month ago.

Not anymore. Last time I checked the taxonomy, scientists who do things like this (i.e. fuss over the distinction between species) were calling them all Canis lupus, and house dogs were being called C. lupus familiaris, a subspecies of C. lupus.

Funny that right now, "Dog Whisperer" is doing a show on wolf-hybrids, and folks, they ARE NOT DOGS. They're wolves, and anyone who has a wolf-hybrid needs to understand that. Apparently there's a big problem suddenly of wolf-hybrids being abandoned by their owners who couldn't cope with having a wild animal instead of a tame dog.

Yep, same with our Nikki. She was everyone's buddy. A lot of little toddlers took their first steps hanging on to her in the early days when my wife did day care. When one of the young kids would cry, Nikki would go sit by the toddler and howl until the wife came. I use to tell my wife that she should have been paying the dog for helping her out. One of the hardest things I ever did in my life was having to put her down. She remained a class act up until the end, but you could look in her eyes and it was like her looking back and saying, "I'm all done and it's time."

*sigh* Yeah, that is always a horrible time in life. Had my first dog (Australian shorthaired mutt) pass away back in October of last year at the age of 14...she had had diabetes, uterine cancer, and full blown glaucoma, but she still wagged her tail and loved everyone she could ever meet...Nikki's going on 7 now, and I just can't imagine life without him.

Last I checked they were considered the same species, with dogs being a subspecies... Wikipedia seems to reflect this as well. This means those retarded chihuahuas are the same species as a giant grey wolf.

Biology. :the major subdivision of a genus or subgenus, regarded as the basic category of biological classification, composed of related individuals that resemble one another, are able to breed among themselves, but are not able to breed with members of another species.

He acts silly, as I'd imagine yours does. Must be something about yellow Shepherds. His game is bringing potted plants from the back yard into the living room. He's very careful not to break the pots, but he still spills dirt all over the place.
