Definitely had helmets (this would've been about 18 years ago or so); it struck more on the meatier part of my cheek (closer to the nose, directly below the eye), IIRC, so the ear flaps wouldn't have helped. I do remember that there were a couple of marks from the stitching on the ball, which was kinda cool. Never really thought about coming a few inches from losing an eye, until now that is...

Saw the same thing on a golf course when a buddy got hit near the collar bone by a tee-drive. It dropped him like a cinder block. He was fine but the next day at work he opened his shirt to show off his new strawberry, complete with 30+ dimple marks. We giggled like school girls and said we could even see "Titleist" spelled backwards.

CSS: I took a one-hop line drive in softball practice one time. This was in pee-wee/little league; the regular third base player went in to bat, and the coaches asked for volunteers to come play third. I was like 7 years old. Ball hit me in the forehead. When I went in at the end of practice, they could see the stitchmarks on top of the goose egg.
sigh. I only cried when all the team moms were huddled around me, inspecting my forehead.
