Doesn't matter whos jet it was, because it wasn't theirs and it was in their airspace. Whole thing is Turkeys fault for being in the wrong airspace. They can whine about it all they want it's still their fault. Not saying Syria isn't an asshat just saying place the blame where it deserves to be placed.

Yeah, this should have been out the door the next morning:

"We thought it was an American made jet operated by the Israelis. We are sad we confused the American made jet operated by the Turks with the American made one the Israelis operate. We are prepared to compensate the families of the killed pilots and apologize to them."

I don't think any of the local countries would blame each other for shooting down an Israeli jet in their air space. Normally if the Israelis are in your air space they're coming to bomb you in a surprise strike. Just swear you thought it was Israeli and pay up.

Military nerds and actually members of the military know that Syria is lying through their teeth on this. The point is, you can sell the hell out of this to the general population and placate them with this. Offer up a lame excuse, some cash, and blame the Jews in the process will sate some of the Turkish bloodlust. Syria is just hoping it sates enough of it to avoid a NATO ass kicking.

Nah, it's a dumb one. Ask anyone who's served in an Arab military what it's like sitting in a military vehicle when an Israeli fighter is overhead. I mean, not a lot of those guys are around to tell the tale, but I get the feeling it would be something along the lines of "bad times, man... bad times."

Say what you will about the Israelis, but their air force is arguably the second best in the world and if it were them, that missle wouldn't have hit its the plane and the SAM launcher and radar that fired it would be ash.
