Why is this show still on?

2012-06-27 01:05:51 PM
The last full episode I watched was when Steve Carell left. Without Michael Scott the show is pointless.

Okay, The Office, that's enough. You had a good run but you've overstayed your welcome by two or three seasons now.

This is why most BBC shows only run for three or four series.

BJ Novak was one of the worst parts of the show. He was a biatcharacter for the most part and yet somehow had his name in the credits from the very beginning. He must have some connections or pull in the industry. Not bad for a guy who used to pull pranks on people in the first season of Punk'd.

"According to TV Guide Magazine, Novak, who has been a writer and star on the series since it began, will depart the long-running comedy as a series regular."

He was a regular character?

Done in one. It was a good show, now it's time for something new.

Why oh why do we steal the Brits shows, dumb them down/tame them for the US masses and expect them to be funny/witty?

I know Seinfeld gets a lot of crap for the final episode, but at least he was able to maintain a bit of artistic integrity despite the temptation of tons of cash. He ended on his own terms, which is more than most TV shows do.

Yeah he was writing the show. In fact several of the Office characters had other roles prior to becoming actors. Toby was also a show writer. Phyllis originally had a job looking for talent for the show. One or two of the others were involved in the writing as well.

Writers usually get WRITING credits. Novak has been in the opening ACTING credits from the beginning. The guy who plays Toby is the freaking showrunner for that series, but you didn't see him in the opening credits from the beginning.

Did either of them start acting on the show from the first episode? I thought for sure Toby did. Anyway, BJ's character had some good moments after he left Scranton... starting his own business... that was a good few episodes.

I just finished watching season 8, and in my opinion its the best season in years. Andy is a nice replacement manager for Scott, it was a much smoother transition than I expected. Scott's character in the last few seasons before his departure was just annoying, not funny.

And I'm kinda glad Novack's character is not going to be a regular. He's funny like once every other episode.

Wait, Catherine Tate is joining the show? I might have to check that out.

It was a great show, but it is time to say goodbye (quite a while ago). There is always more money to be made by the network than there is entertainment value to the show.

No one bothers to remember history. Each character (besides seinfeld) got their own show, and they sucked. Joey from 'friends' got his spin-off and it sucked. None of these characters have enough to carry a show on their own, but together it works.

Blah blah blah... British shows are always better... blah blah blah... does anyone else hate stupid fat Americans and their so-called "culture" as much as me? By the way I'm American.

Also, why would anyone want to climb aboard this sinking ship?

Sitcoms should not last more than five seasons and should have a strong overall arc so that it ends where it should.

This metric doesn't work for all shows, obviously, but it's a good guideline.

That the show survived long enough for Steve Carell to leave is asinine. One of the central tenets of the show was that Michael was the ultimate Peter-Principle small-time idiot who was doomed for eternity to his white-collar purgatory.

Also any show that commits itself to the mockumentary format (where characters address camera, not the sneaky middle ground of Arrested Development) will inevitably paint itself in a corner with:

- Showing characters in situations where camera and mics would not be present (most anything set outside the office, for example)
- Showing characters in situations where cameras and mics would likely not be condoned, legally or otherwise (The Deposition, which is a great episode nonetheless)
- So how much footage are you guys collecting, and when the hell is thing going on the air?

She is just terrible in that show. It's like they are forcing her character to be the female version of Michael Scott. The way they added here was ridiculous. She just walked into Andy's empty office and claimed herself the new manager. Terrible character, terrible writing

Hey done in one.

/stopped watching at the 5th. Wondered why everyone else still did.

So just to clarify, during some mysterious 5th season episode the entertainment level of this show dropped below your personal watchability level. More than simply 'jumping the shark' for you, The Office ceased to become an element in your life.

Then, at an unspecified time later you became aware through observation of friends or perhaps various internet web pages that other members of the human race did still continue to watch the aforementioned Office television program. At that time you became curious as to why they did not 'quit the show' after this mysterious 5th season episode as you yourself had done.

Finally, today on Fark you obtained further information about the continuation of the show and subsequently left this comment: /stopped watching at the 5th. Wondered why everyone else still did.

These are the facts as we understand them.

We thank you for your participation and request that you remain available for future Fark threads about shows you no longer watch.

If I remember correctly it just got old and worn out without the plot moving in any direction. After the Dunder infinity season (if that was the fourth one) the plot just died off, and they had to force the Jim and Pam and other girl love triangle or something. That sucked and they ruined the show in my opinion. It didn't even feel like the show anymore.

This is happening to another show I loved How I Met Your Mother.

You can discuss it since you seem to crave it or you can Fark off too.

I think he was doing both shows because they were on the air at the same time, kinda like 2 part-time jobs. But, yes, 3rd rock was a great show. You wanna see a French Stuart show? I think not, but I'd be curious of what crazy sweaters he wears.

I agree with that. He's just way too deadpan and not likable like Steve Carrell. I like him in movies though.

Michael Scott needed to leave. He went from idiot-savant manager to a complete petulant child by the time he left.

The show is well-past its prime, but I do think this past season was better than the previous couple by a long shot. Although the shoehorned in subplot of the new office girl hitting on Jim was horribly done.

I'm really looking forward to the next season of Veep. Considering how much shows tend to improve after their first season, it could really be great. The cast they assembled for it is excellent.

I stopped watching around season 5 or so. About the time when Jim and Pam got married. Can't believe it's in its 9th season.
