Wait a second.....why is everyone assuming that coddling illegal immigrants (who can't vote) will gain the votes of legal immigrants?

If I were an immigrant to the US and had taken the time, money, and effort to do it properly and gain my citizenship, I wouldn't want my president to "coddle" those who skipped all that.

After all, I earned my citizenship, why would I want to reward those who just hopped the fence?

Of course, some legal immigrants will have family and friends who are illegal and want to support them, but I doubt that would numerically counter my above argument.

For all the negative ads, trash-talking of Obama, failed leadership, yada-yada... Romney just can't connect with anyone. You know that stirring, rousing feeling you get one someone really makes you feel like everything will be OK? That emotional connection, that hope.... Romney literally has ZERO of it.

Romney has two settings, 1) trash-talking Obama, and 2) robotic repetition of poorly detailed GOP talking points.

Gotta do what you gotta do. I actually dont have a problem with Obama winning re-election. A divided political system is the best political system.

A shame the GOP can pull that kind of thing off.

I would venture to say that most of the folks who immigrated here legally have at least a few family and/or friends here who have overstayed their visas and would be sympathetic to any form of amnesty.

It's not really amnesty either, but don't let partisan politics get in the way of a good effort at branding: Politifact

"The Obama plan, which does not require congressional approval, allows young people who came here illegally to apply for temporary relief from deportation. In a memo, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano gave immigration officers the leeway to grant that relief for up to two years at a time. They also can approve work permits."

Fark you, I got mine! seems to be a very American attitude, not always shared by immigrant Americans. Some immigrant Americans do not support the very complicated and convoluted system of hoops they have to jump through to gain citizenship, and actually have empathy for others here illegally which was gained by having to go through what some see as a needlessly complicated system which often seems designed to simply to keep the "wrong type of people", meaning non-Whites. out.

Subby, maybe Americans aren't so much supportive of Obama's policy stance on immigration so much as turned off by Mitt's calculated refusal to take any stance on immigration.

People have grown tired of the song and dance, and now want to officially know what Mitt stands for. Mitt refuses to give it to them, probably because he doesn't know himself.

I don't think he should rely on coddling illegal immigrants. He should also coddle school teachers, trade unionists, and everybody else that the Republicans have insulted, offended, exploited to divide voters, stolen the vote and other fundamental rights from, etc. You know, the Democratic Party base. Well, half the Republican Party base also, if truth be known.

How exactly does one go about identifying that someone both plans to vote, and is an illegal alien? "Hi, is this Miguel Sanchez of 1234 Main Street, Small Town USA? Do you plan to vote? Yes? Okay, next question. Are you an illegal alien, and therefore admitting that you conspire to commit a federal crime by voting? Yes? Okay, next question. Who will you be voting for? Thanks for your time."

I smell bullshiat.

If you type "Republicans war on ..." into Google the top five suggestions are:

Republicans war on women
Republicans war on science
Republicans war on education
Republicans war on the vote
Republicans war on the poor.

Dropping the "s" nets you

Republican war on the middle class

So technically they have insulted, injured or warred on everybody except anti-education, anti-science, anti-democratic white men with lots of money, namely themselves. The Cavalier South is riz agin!* Some of them, of course, are only honorary Southerners, as they live in the North, Canada, the UK, or la France profonde, among other places.

"Themselves" means any Republican bigwig who thinks universal male suffrage for non-real property owners was the biggest mistake ever made this side of taxation, government, and the motto "with freedom and justice for all", or in other words, the men parodied by The Trouble with Nowadays by Cleveland Amory, cat-lover.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Trouble-Nowadays-Curmudgeon-Strikes/dp/0345 2 97202

Dammit. Not available for the Kindle.

I've read it, find it more drole than P.J. O'Rourke on a good day, and if you want to understand the Bush adminstration, the Koch Brothers and other owners of the Tea Party movement, you have to get your ass to the public library to see if they have a copy still. Mine was second hand from the public library book store. You might also try buying it online or used.

Or you could read The Proper Bostonians (1947). I expect it is similar although I haven't got it myself.

Nice find.... that's a bad position for Romney to be in. You can't win an election without convincing people that you're better, that you have a solution, a way forward, that you understand what they're going through right now. You have to win people over. Romney is putting all his eggs in the "Obama bad and I'm not Obama" basket. If things turnaround with the economy, gas prices, and unemployment, there's a chance that Romney could get whipped hard. But we're not exactly there yet...

There was a comment on that exact subject about a week or so ago.

Basically, look back at some of the recent presidential candidates with that problem and you see a trend:

Bob Dole - I'm not Clinton
Al Gore - I'm not Clinton
John Kerry - I'm not Bush
John McCain - I'm not Bush
Mitt Romney - I'm not Obama

The candidates who won, on the other hand, had more of an individual personality rather than a "I'm not them" message. If you don't have some sort of clear message as to what you're going to do - and I mean details - you won't win the enthusiasm battle. You'll get those charged up about voting AGAINST someone, but that doesn't usually translate into a win if you also don't get people who are looking to vote FOR someone.

Strawman.

There was a high percentage of illegals who voted in my state in 08. All that is required to cast a ballot is a phone, water or electric bill that shows a local address. Voter registration offices were set up in sections of town where it is known that 50% or more of the residents are illegal. Yet they had lines out the door for close to two months. They were signing people up as fast a they could.

Here is the state of Virginia's ID requirements:

2. or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check or paycheck that shows name and address

Most states have a provision like this.

So you honestly believe that illegals will take advantage of an IRS loophole but not a loophole to vote.
