Going to have to give the win to Spain, 2-1. I'd love to see an upset though. I think Germany's best chances would be up against Portugal. That being said, I can't wait to see Portugal lose.

It's a tough decision.

Spain is a far tougher opponent than the Czech Republic. I don't expect this game to become the Christiano Ronaldo show like Portugal's previous game did. Spain's defense against France was simply masterful and Portugal will have to work very hard to get their chances.

Still, I can't just think that Portugal will curl into a ball and die, they'll be putting in their best effort against their top rival.

It's going to be a fantastic game.

/and thanks to f*cking work, I have to wait until the re-broadcast

I've got class so I'm going to be missing it too. It's the first day so I can't miss it. Skipping tomorrow though for the Germany match. Not gonna miss another one of those.

I too think Portugal is going to give it their all. Though once Spain gets goal number two they're going to be dead in the water.

Spain - Germany final is what I'm hoping for. I don't want Portugal of even having the honour of reaching the finals.

Portugal will actually attack and try to score on Spain. I still think Spain will win but should be an exciting match

I was in the change room at the pool this morning and a Down's guy walks in. He was sporting his Portugal jersey with Ronald's number on the back and his mug on the front. I smile and say hello, and he gives me the thumbs up and then points to his shirt. I didn't have the heart to tell him I'm rooting for Spain and that I think that Ronaldo is a whiny biatch.

Portugal will win. Spain is overrated. They're like the New England Patriots of football.

Spain is the most entertaining team to watch for me and probably my favorite EURO team if not favorite overall behind U.S. but I am all in with The Anteater. Por 2-1. CR goes off, a score and an assist.

I really hope Portugal loses just so I don't have to listen to the douchebag in the apartment above me yell and scream at his TV, followed by hours of him blowing his airhorn and yelling at people on the street.

orange storm: Portugal will actually attack and try to score on Spain. I still think Spain will win but should be an exciting match

This is my thought as well. In spite of their (earned) reputation for theatrics, Portugal has been a simply good team to watch this tournament and have earned every one of their wins to this point. Hopefully the match can live up to my hopes for it...

Jordi Alba and Sergio Ramos will have to be at the top of their game to contain an inspired Ronaldo. As is the case with boxing, styles make matches and Portugal's speed during counters (otherwise known as the "just give the ball to Ronaldo") serves as a great antidote to Spain's possession-heavy game that sends a lot of people forward.

2012-06-27 12:26:06 PM
This is a very hard match to call. Not only is it difficult to tell who will win, but its hard to predict how they will even play this one. Neither a 1-0 snoozer nor a 3-2 scorcher would surprise me. If you want a great game, you want Portugal to score first, early in the game.

That said, 2-0 Spain.

netweavr: Portugal will win. Spain is overrated. They're like the New England Patriots of football.

That's a bit harsh. The Spanish team has some really good players in it but they are strangled by this Barca like possession style game. While the idea of your opponents can't win if they don't have the ball works in club games against poor teams against teams that have the ability to break fast and get a 1:1 conversion rate from strikes on target. Spain need to have someone at the sharp end who is not scared of pulling the trigger and not try and walk the ball into the back of the net.

It will be 1-1 until penalties. Spain will have massive possession but Portugal will defend like hell then break and score.

It's my birthday so hopefully Spain will make me a present of destroying Portugal.

I predicted Germany would beat Spain in the final and I stand by that, but I really hope Spain win it. Mainly because they're phenomenal, but partly just to annoy all the people who think they're boring or overrated or never create a threat.

Yes, they're so strangled they're the world cup champs and tops in the fifa ranking. Oookkaaay.

Spain is a joy to watch.

I think Portugal is going to win. Spain just doesn't look like the world beater they should be. Missing Villa and Puyol seems to be a bigger deal than a lot of people thought.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Portugal knocks 'em off. Spain will dominate possession against anybody, but I thought France in particular just looked disinterested against Spain, and were a worse "tune-up" match for Spain than it should have been.

Defending World Cup and Euro Cup Champions.

Yeah they're really handcuffed.

They don't get credit for their defense either. Yes they keep the ball, but when they lose it, they get it back really fast.

If strangled means not quite as exciting to watch as say, Brazil, okay, he has a point. From a soccer purist perspective, Spain is a technical joy to way. Incredible touch, weight of passes, vision, and possession. They kill you really, methodically and slowly. You know you are going to lose even though its 0-0 or 1-0, but can't do anything about it, because you never see the ball. But if he means that it harms their chances to win, he needs to share what he's smoking.

Portugal has the best player in the tournament backed by one of the best teams.

tl;dr This is what watching Spain is like.

Sometimes a great game plan with great players confuses the team into hesitancy.

I'm with Mark Cuban on this. You can't say that someone just doesn't want it bad enough and call that analysis when there is a game plan designed to achieve the result you saw on the field. They all want it. Badly. They are some of the most competitive people you will ever meet. Ribery had no room to work in that game and possession denied him many chances for his team to get him the ball. Spain was doing something to them that they just didn't have an answer for and that deserves credit.

I hope Portugal wins, just because it will be a huge victory for table manners, driving skills, and beer that doesn't taste like wee.

On the other hand, Spain might retaliate by opening the dams.

Well, France also threw out a more "defensive" team for the starting 11, which backfired. I think Nasri and someone else who's more of a threat were subbed into that game much later. I was pretty drunk by the half of that game and my memory is hazy.

I think Spain is too good to be cute with your matchups. You're only going to posses the ball 40% of the game against them...that's a given. Might as well play your most threatening 11 and hope you score on a counter or something early.

Now that's analysis.

Alternatively, they are going to possess the ball 60% of the time, best to have a team that has the best chance of stopping their scoring chances. In knockout stage, if it finishes tied, a more likely outcome with a more defensive team, France has a better chance than in regular run of play by winning on pks. I think there is a reason that so many coaches with weaker teams play a more defensive side.

It didn't work, obviously. But I'm not sure it wasn't the smart play, ugly as it was.

I am so ready for these last games. I'm going to have serious withdrawal once this tournament is over.

Wish I had someone to get drunk with and watch today. Work and being responsible suck!

Also, being a forward for the Spanish National Team is a tough gig... There is three of them in the bench, yet Del Bosque decides to play Cesc up top. And having Llorente in the bench you play Torres? Come on.

2012-06-27 01:52:36 PM
Wooo, good way to pass some time at work.
I'm not gonna predict an exact score, but I think it will be close, with Spain winning in the end (non PKs).

But as long as its a good game, it doesn't matter to me either way.

/unless Ronaldo gets the winning goal...gah

This could be an interesting game. Both teams have a long painful history of being severely fouled surprisingly frequently by their opponents, especially the Portuguese. Thankfully, most of the injured players usually recover quickly once they have been helped to the sideline, but those fouls could determine the game.

I'd love to see Ronaldo get a card for flopping and then crying and peeing himself like a little schoolgirl.

689908: Spain have now gone eight consecutive knock-out games across two Euros and a World Cup without conceding a goal.

Casillas will become the first ever player to win 100 international games if Spain get through tonight. From 136 matches.

THIS. Lost in all the debate about whether Spain has lost its will to attack is the fact that Casillas has been an iron wall in goal.
