If it is a brand new stop sign, it is totally understandable why people might miss it at first. Your brain stops registering things when you drive the same route year after year without it changing....

They have all this new tech in cars to alert you if you are drifting out of your lane or closing your eyes, or hit the brakes for you if you are about to hit someone because you are too busy texting to drive. We need to embrace that tech and enhance it, and make it mandatory for every car on the road. All cars should be able to detect when their driver drifts into another lane, or runs a stop sign, or cuts someone off. The car should then automatically pull off to the side of the road, and beat the living fark out of the driver, using robotic arms that can unfold from the steering wheel and/or glove box.

Many years ago, the city installed stop signs at the intersection near the place I was living at the time....I ran them for two days before I realized they were there...Just didn't register that they were there...

/got stopped, that's how I found out they had been there for two days..luckily small town cop just told me to pay attention from now on, so no ticket...

1) Cincinnatians are really shiatty drivers

2) Cincinnati police are douchebags

Gladys Kravitz hasn't been the same since the Stevens' moved away..

Telling a cop to stop at a stop sign is a good way of getting yourself locked up. Unless a serious injury or worse occurs, stop sign violations and jaywalking are routinely ignored by LEOs. Too much paperwork for little reward. Police have to be ready for important calls (and trying tio chat up the teenage girls who work at fast food places and water ice stands).

Actually, the kid that died "darted" out into traffic nowhere near a stop sign. Police say speed was not a factor. The kid was run over by a car and a metro bus.

So, yes, this woman needs a hobby.

THIS. They changed a yield to a stop sign in my neighborhood, I think I noticed it a month later. Plus, what good is that crazy biatch doing when she seems to only yell at cars AFTER they pass her by? It's not like they can actually hear her. Plus I'd be paying more attention to the crazy lady yelling than any road signs.

Don't they put up large "New Stop sign" signs about 1/2 a block before the intersection? I see those signs here all the time.

Given that most stop signs are complete bullshiat as long as you (or your car, in this case) slows down enough to get a good look around in every direction - which can be 30 or 40 mph in areas with 1mi visibility and no obstructions - no, no we should not embrace a technology that wipes out our gas mileage by stopping anywhere anyone complains enough to get a city planner to install one to make them go away.

Instead, let's get cars to slow down and recognize danger at intersections, and remove the need for stop signs at all. If they detect traffic (vehicular or pedestrian), then stop or take turns, or whatever.

How do you make sure people see the new sign sign? A new new sign sign sign? Where does it end??

I would run that stop sign too if it meant not stopping and listening to that screeching, annoying, make you want to kill yourself voice. On a brighter note, at least she is getting her fat @ss out of the house for some exercise.

About three years ago, they flipped a one-way street that intersects with my one-way street, and since then, we get at least a half dozen cars per day driving the wrong way down the street.

What gets me is that maybe you miss the giant "one way" and "do not enter" signs, but how do you not notice that both sides of the street have parked cars facing you?

CSB:
Monday evening while leaving my neighborhood, I had a bit of a slow time crossing a major intersection. 3 light cycles for a not-so-long line of cars? WTF?

Turns out, a naked dude was standing in the middle of 2-3 lanes of traffic going each of 4 directions; he was in the only spot none of them goes (unless they're turning left).

// intersection was governed by traffic lights, so he clearly wasn't performing a public service

Ned Stark: How do you make sure people see the new sign sign? A new new sign sign sign? Where does it end??

Iirc, when they place a new stop sign, especially on roads with a 55 mph speed limit, they put up an square orange or diamond-shaped yellow warning sign about 500 feet before the stop sign, with a picture of the stop sign in the center, and a black arrow pointing up, and the words "STOP AHEAD" across the bottom.

2012-06-27 10:54:49 AM
There's a woman in our town who stands by the side of the street pointing at passing cars with (what looks like) a radar gun. She's some crazy stay-at-home mom who thinks that her street is the only street in town that needs 24 hour traffic police presence. Of course I find it my duty to give her my "hand signal" when she screams at me going 38 in a 35 mph zone.

You and the cop are morons. The feeling that "nobody is coming" is a perception that may or may not be correct. People that you cannot see on cross streets and drive ways are expecting you to stop. Hopefully you drive off a cliff and die soon.

I wonder what the thought process is for someone like this. "There's a new stop sign...hmmm...I think I'll go screech at people so they can see it." It's a foreign concept to me.

CSB:

I used to teach at a school with a weird intersection near the entrance to the parking lot where students would get dropped off in the morning. It has a stop sign that isn't particularly obvious, as it's attached to a light pole near some trees. I was on "front greeter" duty, which entailed standing at the curb and ensuring kids didn't get run over. One morning, I saw a mom in a convertible corvette blow through the stop sign and pull up to the curb. I walked over and said, "Ma'am, I don't think you saw the stop sign back there." She got huffy, asked my name, then went and parked the car. She went inside and screamed at my principal that I had "no right to enforce traffic laws."

The principal, always one to avoid confrontation, came out and asked me to refrain from upsetting the parents.

They could put up some sort of flashing sign on the approach that says "stop ahead" and leave it there for a week or so. That's what they did in my area when they changed one intersection to a 4-way stop instead of 2-way. Granted the street that got the new signs was a 45mph zone. Still with the warning signs I almost ran it once or twice.

That's crap. I don't care if it's a 250 lb. beast or a 90 lb. crackhead. Someone screeching at me while I'm driving is not going to be met with approval. And the 9-year-old wasn't killed by someone running a stop sign.
