Pleaed to see Pitfall, but no River Raid or Berserk? Also used to love Snoopy and the Red Baron

Fail without Pong

Precious Roy's Horse Dividers: Pleaed to see Pitfall, but no River Raid or Berserk? Also used to love Snoopy and the Red Baron

River Raid 2 was, IMO, the best game ever made for the Atari. It was incredible for the time.

Getting below 700 now, still going down. 675, 650, 625, he's holding. . .no, no he's down, he's down.

/He's all over the place, 900 feet, up to 1300 feet... what an asshole.

Huh, won't load. Is Yars' Revenge on there? So fun... It's hard to believe it was made by the same guy who wrote the ET and Raiders of the Lost Ark 2600 games

You should definitely read the list. It totally isn't a complete troll, and certainly doesn't include Raiders of the Lost Ark as one of the 10 best Atari games ever........

/now, let's watch the reaction

2012-06-27 08:16:25 AM
Jesus. Atari is as old as I uh er..*cough*...nevermind.

2012-06-27 08:18:27 AM
Loved Raiders of the Lost Ark, despite (or maybe because of?) it being hard as hell. Glad to see it getting some love.

Oh, and Pitfall II > Decathlon > Pitfall

2012-06-27 08:18:59 AM
FTFA: Believe it or not, there are more Star Wars video games than all the stars in our solar system put together.

All the stars in our solar system put together? Let's see, quick math....carry the two.... ah yes, we have a total of one star in our solar system. And this article is trying to convince me there are more Star Wars video games than that? Balderdash, I don't believe it.

/Yes, I do sound like a lot of fun at parties...

I love that line.

Pitfall is worth a spot for the music alone, but there should be Adventure. Used to be able to do Level Two in under a minute, make sure the bridge is in the right location in the maze and leave the sword waiting in the spot where the Red Dragon stabs himself on it when he appears. Saves time.

osiris111: No Adventure?

Fail

Amen!

Thankfully, someone made a version you can play in a browser or run
in MS Windows

2012-06-27 08:20:24 AM
No Yars Revenge = Fail. Also, Raiders of the Lost Ark is basically ET without all the negative press. "OK, so here's my whip...how do I use it again? And I've got a gun I guess and...OK I'm dead somehow."

2012-06-27 08:20:30 AM
In no Particular order the list is as follows

1) Ms Pac-Man
2) Pitfall
3) Lunar Lander
4) Raiders of the Lost Ark
5) Breakout
6) Donkey Kong
7) Missle Command
8) Asteroids
9) Empire Strikes Back
10) Mario Bros

List fails without Yars Revenge, Adventure, and Tank

Tank is still inspiring games, the battle mode on Mario Kart is Tank with better graphics, for more people.

2012-06-27 08:20:42 AM
FTFA: Even more challenging, was doing it all on an Atari 2600 using just two buttons to navigate around intricate traps and shadowy thieves.

What?

2012-06-27 08:21:30 AM
If they really wanted to troll, they would have put the Swordquest games on the list

That was a pretty sweet death animation though

I never knew that Atari made Donkey Kong and Mario Bros.

Your_Huckleberry: Pitfall is worth a spot for the music alone, but there should be Adventure.

What the--? Was there something wrong with my cart? The only music in Pitfall was the short blast of "Charge" music when you picked up a treasure item and the Tarzan yell when you swung over a pit. Oh, and the funeral music when you died. Still, kind of simple.

2012-06-27 08:25:02 AM
Put me in the River Raid camp as well. I bought an Atari comp disc for my PS2 and I still play the hell out of that RR and Pitfall.

Good thing they didn't include the Atari 5200... :-/

/felt like if I lost a game of Qix or Super Breakout, I could at least use they joystick to phone somebody...

Sure. One button on the controller and the power button on the console when you get tired of getting killed the exact same way over and over again.

Also, the ONLY Atari game I was ever any good at was Defender. Racked up more than 4 million points one day. And when I say "one day," I mean it took ALL DAY.

/ended up "losing" coz I was sick and tired of it

Megamania was a fun but really hard Space Invaders knockoff

Or Pitfall! for that matter. I guess that makes it an article about the best games for the Atari MVS, but the article never really makes that clear.

There is a distinct possibility that I'm thinking of Jungle King or such game involving swinging on vines over stuff. Or I'm totally imagining everything. Except for the part about Adventure.

Friend of mine had this, I can remember playing it for hours before we figured out the whole "play flute to protect from snakes" thing. Watching that video, I don't ever remember seeing but maybe two or three of those rooms.

That's what was bad about a lot of those old Atari games. I mean come on, make the player find the one spot on the side of seemingly impassable room/wall that they can get through. That kind of thing was fine for a game like Adventure, trying to find one of the last secrets of the game, but asking the player to do that 10 minutes into the game? That's just bad design.

While I'm fully in the Yars Revenge camp, my vote for #1 ever would be Star Raiders. It came with a special keypad, and, while the bad guys were different enough from TIE fighters to avoid a lawsuit... you knew exactly what you were doing. They might as well have told you your name was Luke Skyrunner.

My most vivid Atari memory, though, was when my friend and I got a copy of Real Sports Baseball. The graphics looked great (for Atari), the gameplay seemed fun... until we figured out that, if you held the joystick down, your batter would hit a home run every time. From that moment on, I expected a certain amount of bugs, glitches, poor AI, and the like in my games. The video game industry has still not failed to meet my expectations.

If I had to pick my favorite ten games for the 2600, they would include (in no particular order):

Yar's Revenge
Decathlon
Pitfall II
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Warlords
Super Breakout
Vanguard
Adventure
The Empire Strikes Back
River Raid

2012-06-27 08:48:49 AM
This list fails without Solaris and Defender II (a.k.a. Stargate). Also, Atari 2600's adaptation of Joust was much better than Mario Bros., and yet Mario Bros. made the list. WTF?

Decathlon rocked. Except for the 1500 meter run. That took forever.

I grew up with an Atari 2600 handed down to me by my forebears. God, I loved that thing. I played the shiat out of Grand Prix. Good times.

God tank-pong was so awesome. Nothing would piss a friend off more than nailing him with a sweet bank-shot. That probably was responsible for more destroyed controllers than any other game in history.

Pole Position II kicked ass.

/Atari 7800, biatches! Because your grandparents didn't know what a Nintendo was!

Ah, the blisters I endured from that game. Took quite the toll on a 13-year-old's sex life.

(Yet somehow, I managed.)

But yeah, the 1500 meter run took forever. But I got a cool Gold Medal patch (long since misplaced) out of the deal by sending a pic of my score to Activision, so I felt compensated.

Even better was doing that with your first shot in invisible tank pong. Fights often broke out over who got the 3 jets vs big fat plane too.

It was no Night Driver. And by that, I mean it was actually a decent game.
