Boulder's Flagstaff Fire started with a lightning strike today as well. Storm blew in around 12:45, by 1:15 it had started 3-4 fires.

Quite a site to see the smoke start as a wisp over the Flatirons and then turn into a huge plume of smoke by 3pm.

i.imgur.com From my parent's driveway around 4pm. They're all evacuated by now, but this shiat went crazy quick.

VTGremlin: I was in CO Springs on Saturday. I was actually told by someone there that it was arson too, as there had been multiple fires cropping up all over that area.

All my family lives there (From there originally) so my newsfeed has been constant fire updates and a lot of them were talking about an arsonist.

But it's nice to know that it was lightning and not an insane person hell bent on destroying our state.

Ooshatielf: santadog: It was lightning, and that's official. Here in Estes Park, about 20 miles from where that fire started, we had an incredible lighting storm roll thru Friday night. So on Saturday morning when I saw the smoke plume, I was not surprised.

Okay, I had heard rumors through facebook that Waldo Canyon and some of the southern fires were from an arsonist.

Doubtful, and inciweb.org has all information about every fire in the country, including what set it off, what equipment is being used, etc.. and I haven't seen arson as a cause to any of these fires.

Conditions here are just so freaking dry. People aren't suppose to smoke cigs outside unless they have 3ft around them of non flammable things. Broken glass with sun hitting it right can set things off at this point. A hot muffler touching grass can set off a fire. There's no run off from the mountains, creeks are dry, and the amount of fuel available for any of these fires is just crazy. Between the dry high grasses on the front range to Beetle Kill in the Forests, it really is just the perfect storm.

I'm living just inside the pre-evacuation zone in Boulder. Crazy to see the flatirons covered in smoke. If the fire crests the hill it would run right down into our neighborhood. Nothing compared to co springs, but scary nonetheless.

santadog: , it really is just the perfect storm.

Yeah, I can see that. :/

santadog: I had to evacuate my cabin in Estes Park on Saturday from the fire here. It was with in a mile of my place, and wind was going to bring it right to me.
It's because of the standby crew in Ft. Collins, and the quick actions of Rocky Mountain National Park putting in the order for flight assist, that the fire was contained quickly.

Glad you're ok santadog. Saturday was a really rough day around these parts, and that was a scary-fast fire. Kudos to the crews that took care of it & best to your neighbors up there.

/hoping the best for everyone working tonight. It's gonna be rough tomorrow in Boulder :(

Yea, I'm down near Baseline/Foothills. It seems far, but I'm sure the neighborhoods in the Springs seemed far too.

Any suggestions on where one can donate to support those who have lost possessions and homes? This is just horrible to watch. I'm so sorry for those affected by this.

Best wishes from SoCal to you Colorado Farkers. Please be safe.

Stay safe Coloradoan! My thoughts are with you...

I wonder if the budgets on wild fire prevention and fighting has been cut on the Federal/State/Local level...

RobertBruce: i hope people get out before the order comes, when its possible. learn from others, roads get impassible.

Absolutely! DO NOT wait for orders. I was out of my cabin an hour before the mandatory evac order came, and I'm glad. Nothing worse then everyone heading for the same exit routes as a shiat ton of others.
Start packing, while it's not critical. It's easy to remember the most important stuff when you aren't scrambling to get the fark out.
Get flashlights, water, toilet paper, and grab some food.

5 of the eight fires in Colorado were human caused at about 3PM today...There were two others still under investigation.

according to inciweb.org

and there's the 9 fires in Divide, CO

/be safe everyone, and please pre-evacuate
//my family evacuated 3 days ago and this afternoon it all blew up and the area came into a sudden mandatory evacuation this afternoon. And by sudden, it means "right now, don't grab anything" you gotta go!

Good luck, Colorado Springs.

An arsonist or arsonists set 21 fires around Teller County last week so it's natural that people would wonder. However the M.O. of Waldo Canyon fire is different from the Teller arson fires. So this fire was probably not set by the previous perp(s). Who knows yet whether it was arson by some other firebug, accidental or natural.

Conditions are so bad, it would be easy for somebody to drop a cigarette butt or be careless with a campfire and for an unintentional smolder to turn into this monstrous fire. Or a spark kicked up from a tool, or even static electricity.

Huck And Molly Ziegler: Is there a political party or economic philosophy we can blame this on, or is it just an old-fashioned unfortunate event that must be coped with?

Prayers & supportive thoughts go out to those who've lost everything.

Obviously, the only recourse is to cut the state's fire fighting budget by 40 percent, turn down any additional federal support, and then have a three day pray off in Denver for rain. And then blame Obama.

As somebody who had to live under smoke for a good long time a few times here in BC. That shiat is depressing as hell. Couldn't stop smiling like an idiot when I first saw the sun, moon, and stars.

If you know somebody living near there who isn't evacuated, but can't see the sky. Do something awesome and make them laugh, they need it.

Some of these are just too hard to look at.

Hard to think about how many people's lives are being impacted by this.

Human cause doesn't automatically mean arson. Idiots can start fires all sorts of ways by accident.

Here's some heli pics from Saturday in Estes Park.

From Craigslist: Link

I was on Rampart Range Road and saw the Fire basically when it started. I have video and pictures and believe I know who started the fire. I have left 4 messages with the tip line and have not received a call back. The perpetraitors are probably in another state by now and as time passes crucial evidence is being lost! Somebody needs to contact me asap. I may go to the Television stations tomorrow. What a shame!

Pro Tip: if a wildfire is approaching and you cannot escape follow these instructions. Dig a hole with a shovel. Get in the hole. Hold the spade over your face. Then bury yourself. Then emerge like a cicada after the fire passes over you.
