I'm pretty sure that's how you open a gateway to hell.

I think I'm going to be 75 years old by the time I get through the night without dreaming about this and waking up screaming

That was a whole lot less awesome than what I expected. I was expecting John and got Yoko.

They needed to use a better synthesized voice.

That was surprisingly moving and beautiful.

It took most kids very little time at all to realize Teddy would play ANY cassette, not just the inane story tapes provided.

Before long Teddy Ruxpin was merrily regaling us with Slayer's "Reign in Blood," his mechanical lips straining to catch up to the beat, a growing awareness dawning in his dead eyes.

Sums up my feelings nicely

Not nearly enough ranting, raging, frothing, and screams of "THE JEWS DID 9/11" along with a peppering of racial slurs.

Still have my T.Ruxpin. Talk about mad C/D batteries...

Is it just me, or are these TED talks getting weird?

2012-06-27 02:45:33 AM
I got a Teddy Ruxpin for Christmas when I was 5, I think, and then I got his caterpillar friend for my birthday 3 weeks later. I think my Teddy only lasted a year before the eyes detached somehow and I was too scared to even look at it.

2012-06-27 05:14:54 AM
I was expecting it to be really creepy, but instead it was just boring and stupid.

Still have mine in a box somewhere. It worked the last time we took him out.

Same here. Not creepy at all, and the post-production video flickering audio warping effects just made it hokey.

Let me know when it's been reconfigured to read Fark threads.

That'd be funny.

I feel that it truly captured and communicated the collective angst of the Fark collective.

OK, after almost thirty years on the intertubes, I've seen and heard some messed-up stuff... but now I'm going to have dreams about being locked in whatever building that is...

Now you're getting into the realm of "we used to have a rugby song about that."

2012-06-27 06:48:29 AM
I was half expecting a wall of screaming, burbling, babbling electronic wrecks endlessly bellowing racist slurs and imageboard memes while flames danced in the background and people sobbed offscreen.

In other words, the perfect real-life simulation of 4chan. You have disappointed me for the last time, Internet.

2012-06-27 06:50:14 AM
Teddy Ruxpin had a specific voice and the cassette tapes used a specific technology that allowed the bear to speak and blink his eyes. The technology also distinguished Teddy Ruxpin's voice from the caterpillar (Grubby), the professor, or a narrator. You could not just toss any tape in and expect Teddy Ruxpin to sing along with Steve Perry or Michael Jackson. Occasionally his mouth would move to certain sounds or noises but it would never synch.

This is good and had a budget but all we see are teddy bears talking with synthesized voices to song lyrics. I was more hoping someone was abusing the original technology and used cassettes and programming to have 100 Teddy Ruxpins open their eyes and tell us the end is near and they're coming for our souls.

/come dream with me tonight!

And it spells 'TED', what a remarkable coincidence....

Every one of those sentences was just a completely random thought that is unconnected to the sentence before it, right? Or am I going crazy?

I don't know that those are mutually exclusive, but no, everything in the post you quoted is connected - loosely. It's okay, I'll translate, since I speak fluent stoner. The poster was relating that his/her sibling used to work for the company which made Teddy Ruxpin, and that said sibling provided a funny video of employees of that company being entertained in an apparently salacious manner by Japanese executives. Then there is some sad rumination about the event which led to the demise of that company, which involved laser tag and police and killing, somehow (even I'm not very clear on that part). Then there is the detail that the sibling still works in the industry, though necessarily at a different company.

I put old comedy albums into mine. Lily Tomlin's phone company routine coming out of Teddy Ruxpin was profoundly amusing to me as a child.
