FloydA: I found that the British, and especially the Irish, actually like Americans a lot, regardless of ancestry, as long as we're not jingoistic, uneducated, ignorant, insular nitwits. They don't seem to care for stupid, ignorant, nationalists who think that the US is the pinnacle of civilization and that all other nations are crap, but that's only to be expected.

To put it in context, I was sitting at Gatwick a few years ago, and overheard a couple of tourists from Texas who enjoyed most of their visit to England, but the man said he could not really respect a country that didn't celebrate the 4th of July.

It took me several minutes to realize that he was not joking.

Yikes!

I recall being told on more than one occasion that I wasn't "like other Americans." I wasn't offended. The British treated me with more respect than I get in my own country.

Then again, perhaps they were so awesome because they could see how excited I was to be there. I wanted to visit England ever since I was a Beatles-crazy little girl. Loved it so much I had to see Scotland and Ireland, too. :)

Remember back to 2008 when we all had this sneaky suspicion after 8 years of George Bush that the rest of the world viewed us as a bunch of loud-mouthed, Humvee driving, backwards-baseball-hat wearing jerks?

No but I remember people who live in this country and hate it telling me that fairy tale.

Hating America just comes naturally to some people, particularly anyone who doesn't like freedom for the individual and pretending that it was because of "Bush" was just giving them a focus for their stupidity.

DownDaRiver: I used to really care about others perception of Ameicans.

But then I really started paying attention to the situations that others were veiwing us about.
We get blamed for a lot of cfrap that we really can't do anything about.
Take the Israel and Palestinien crap. Ya I know all the background of it all. But everyone always looks to us to fix their shiat. Every president we've had for the past, what, 50-60 years has been judged on what he has done about their problems.
We can't fix them! They hate each other, they want the other to go away and they're willing to kill themselves and the other to make their point. They are not willing to fix themselves. That isn't our fault! We can't fix what they aren't willing to fix for themselves. We aren't responsible anymore.
Much of that fits many other situations. We get the blame for something that isn't fixed that we didn't break.

The only reason the right wing supports Israel is because they need the Jooz around in order for them to be slaughtered at the Second Coming. Otherwise, how else will the Aryan-white "chosen" get their McMansions in Heaven?

Canada has freedom, Japan has freedom, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia, Belgium has freedom. Two hundred seven sovereign states in the world, like 180 of them have freedom.

And you, sorority-girl... yeah, just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth one day, there are some things you should know, and one of them is that there is absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest country in the world. We're seventh in literacy, twenty-seventh in math, twenty-second in science, forty-ninth in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, third in median household income, number four in labor force, and number four in exports. We lead the world in only three categories: number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending, where we spend more than the next twenty-six countries combined, twenty-five of whom are allies. None of this is the fault of a 20-year-old college student, but you, nonetheless, are without a doubt, a member of the WORST-period-GENERATION-period-EVER-period, so when you ask what makes us the greatest country in the world, I don't know what the fark you're talking about?! Yosemite?!!!

We sure used to be (the greatest). We stood up for what was right! We fought for moral reasons, we passed and struck down laws for moral reasons. We waged wars on poverty, not poor people. We sacrificed, we cared about our neighbors, we put our money where our mouths were, and we never beat our chest. We built great big things, made ungodly technological advances, explored the universe, cured diseases, and cultivated the world's greatest artists and the world's greatest economy. We reached for the stars, and we acted like men. We aspired to intelligence; we didn't belittle it; it didn't make us feel inferior. We didn't identify ourselves by who we voted for in the last election, and we didn't scare so easy. And we were able to be all these things and do all these things because we were informed. By great men, men who were revered. The first step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one-America is not the greatest country in the world anymore. (But it could be.)"

There's a close link between the stress pattern of I could care less and the kind that appears in certain sarcastic or self-deprecatory phrases that are associated with the Yiddish heritage and (especially) New York Jewish speech. Perhaps the best known is I should be so lucky!, in which the real sense is often "I have no hope of being so lucky", a closely similar stress pattern with the same sarcastic inversion of meaning. There's no evidence to suggest that I could care less came directly from Yiddish, but the similarity is suggestive. There are other American expressions that have a similar sarcastic inversion of apparent sense, such as Tell me about it!, which usually means "Don't tell me about it, because I know all about it already". These may come from similar sources.

Tanthalas39: Coelacanth: I live and work in Las Vegas. I get to meet a lot of travelers from overseas. Some of those travelers stray from the Strip and then they see the real America: Homeless people begging on traffic islands, little clusters of tents in vacant lots here and there, foreclosed homes everywhere.

Some of them come here thinking that we're just dicks. They leave knowing that we're just full of shiat.

Because if there's any city that exemplifies your average American, it's Vegas.

And Detroit. But not so many tourists visit Detroit these days, so your secret is safe. BTW, considering how many Americans relocate to Vegas for work, I'd say it more than exemplifies your average American.

Gergesa: FloydA: Texas who enjoyed most of their visit to England, but the man said he could not really respect a country that didn't celebrate the 4th of July.

That seems to perfectly exemplify the Americentric world view that too many in the US have.

What most of my European friends seemingly always forget is that the US, geographically, is about the size of Europe. Their concept of a "country" is about like the US's concept of a state. Most of the people in the US only care about (or know) what's going on in their country. When you're living in Europe, since the countries are far smaller, one would pretty much have to keep an eye on what surrounding countries are doing.

While it's true that many US citizens are ignorant of other countries, I've often found that those outside the US don't have an accurate view of the US, anyway, and only know what they've seen on TV. They also don't understand that one will get a WILDLY different opinion of the US when one visits Seattle vs. New York, for example. Or any of the southern states for that matter.

And most of what everyone was saying in that video really applies to the US government (one of the individuals) or extreme right wing ideologies, so their views are understandable. The US government is a bully in a lot of ways and I'm embarssed by some of its actions. Most people who decry the US really don't know much about it except the superficial things they see on TV or read in papers. I also suspect the Muslim world hates the US because of the anti-US sentiment being taught as forced indoctrination to children.

I've traveled all over the world, and what I've found is that most everyone is the same. Most people want the same things - a good life for them and their families. Some cultures offer some advantages, others disadvantages (which change depending upon your value system), but I don't see any country as "better" overall than any other country. No one has it right, and the US is not above reproach, and I'll apologize in advance to everyone and anyone who encounters one of those "'mercia RULZ!!" dimwits.

BullBearMS: Makh: Gee, I wonder why we're not more popular in Afghanistan and Pakistan?

I wonder if it has something to do with our regularly murdering innocent women and children and then publicly announcing that anyone we kill who is male and of a certain age is a terrorist?

newspaper revelations last week about the "kill list" showed the Obama administration defines a militant as any military-age male in the strike zone when its drone attacks.

Then there is the part where after we kill people with drones we target the people who try to offer them medical assistance with more drones?

Or the part where we target funerals for yet more drone attacks?

I just can't imagine why people think we are dicks.

Aaron David Miller, a long-term Middle East policy adviser to both Republican and Democratic administrations, delivered a damning verdict in a recent issue of Foreign Policy magazine. He wrote bluntly: "Barack Obama has become George W Bush on steroids."

Oh, wait. Now I know why people think we are dicks.
