Yes because a much more cost effective health care policy would be to continue to promote their purchasing 64 oz Big Gulps and the jumbo moonpies because chronic care for their diabetes, heart disease, etc. is so much cheaper than some counseling.

I would settle for a "fattie class" on airplanes.

Put Chunk in the cargo hold with a hamster-style water bottle on the cage. He'll be fine.

For Children, we need to make the streets safe. Death for child molesters, child pornographers and a constant monitoring of all websites that have this content. Use them as honey pots to bust the guilty. Round up the gang bangers and execute them all. This will allow parents to let their children outside to play on their own. Reducing Obesity. Obesity in children has more to do with safety then it does with any other factor.

It's not a mental issue for most Americans. It's a lack of education in proper nutrition, healthy eating and exercise. I had to learn how to be a healthy weight.

The problem is a lot of people don't have the want or time to learn.

People are getting too much food ?

Then why are we giving 46 million people food stamps ?

Cut them off, they get skinny. Save money.

Somebody is getting rich off of all this gluttony. Why not tax those corporations and individuals like it was 1955? They can pay for the medical costs. That would shut everybody up (except the victims of the new costs).

FTFY:

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force urged doctors to identify patients with a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or more - currently one in three Americans - and either provide counseling themselves or refer the patient to a program designed to promote weight loss and improve health prospects.

One third =/= 80%.

Our "Obesity problem" has very little to do with nutrition, IMO.

An American can very easily spend the entire day sitting in a chair and staring at a screen. 20 years ago, that hardly ever happened (except for the wierdos).

A couple dozen of THIS, with a touch of 'why the hell is everyone so pissed off that a president (or his wife) promote good health?'

I swear, if the polio vaccine were being developed while fartbongo was president, people would be screaming about that.

Or, you know, the HPV vaccine.

Finally, significant obesity absolutely is a problem, and no, I don't believe that the fatties out there like being fat, or that the benefits of not being a lardass are easily worth the effort. But those who really believe it are welcome to, you know, not get help for it, since its farking voluntary.

You really shouldn't make fun of them while they exercise. If you discourage them from doing that, you're almost working to keep them fat, which is really in everyone's worst interest. In all other circumstances... use your own judgement.

I have no problem with this, especially given how many people have no idea about proper nutrition (what will make them fat).

Yeah, exercise is for people already in shape. Fat people should learn to keep the weight off the way you do, by being an ignorant jackass.

2012-06-26 08:50:46 PM
If the Federal Government can force people to buy health insurance under the Commerce Clause, they can force people to go to "fat camp". Overweight people create additional costs to the health-care system, and since the Feds are regulating it and making participation in said system mandatory, there's no barrier to creating any arbitrary rule they wish under the guise of "regulating interstate commerce".

If you don't believe me, read Wickard v. Filburn to see how far removed from actual commerce the government can go in terms of abrogating personal liberty under this chain of logic.

exercise is for everybody. Running, otoh, is a very mediocre option for fatties. Its hard on the joints and very difficult, while inferior for overall calorie burning to circuit training. The fatties in that picture would probably be better off walking. At least they wouldn't feel like garbage and risk significant injuries while doing it.

Republicans are fine with the government paying Monsanto and the like, as well as corn farmers billions of dollars in subsidies for products that make us fat. They are fine with cheap, junky, fatty food costing half as much as produce and healthy food.

But tell them we need to tackle this obesity epidemic, (and it is one,) and they farking shiat themselves over it.

America! Fark yeah!

When I was a kid a large was 20oz at McDonald's. Then they added the 32 oz Supersize.
While I was in high school the small went to 16oz, medium 20, large 32, and the super was 44. Then all of the sudden you couldn't even get a 16oz drink for awhile.

2012-06-26 08:56:22 PM
Here's another idea: Stop subsidizing the agriculture industry, that money hardly went to poor farmers, they went to large corporations like high fructose corn syrup-makers Archer Daniels Midland and the fatty Frito Lays.

If the government wants to make people thinner, then don't encourage them AT THE SAME FARKING TIME. It's hard to think these counseling classes (coerced by the government) will do much good when its own policies are counter-productive.

Mrs. Smurf has been putting on a bit of weight lately due to a foot injury. I don't cook low fat because we typically get in 2 to 4 hours of exercise a day. The government is the reason why we can't get her foot taken care of. We can't afford insurance for her because Idaho mandates that she be covered for pregnancy even though she's fixed. Now the government wants to increase our insurance costs even more to cover something that never should have been a problem in the first place.

Government. Fixing everything that's not broken until it's FUBAR

Funny. However, I'm more valuable to the government alive than dead. As an actual working taxpayer, the additional incremental cost to the government caused by my existence is far outweighed by the taxes they receive (income, sales, property, etc.) Were I perpetually on the dole, perhaps then I'd be afraid.

2012-06-26 08:57:43 PM
It doesn't matter if obesity counseling is a good idea. It is.
It matters whether mandating it is within the role of the government. It most certainly is not.

I cant stand BMI. I do realize its an easy tool but for a long time Ive been afraid of something like this to come down the line based on BMI. Im more afraid of insurance premiums to increase or to be adjusted for a BMI score. If you are interested in what is considered overweight to obese, click on my profile.
