I don't know, it seems like they had lots of ads in that series, and none of the others mentioned tipping or not having to get dressed up--they all talk about other selling points such as the "quality," the fast service, the price, the convenient locations, etc. Who knows, maybe they had a similar "you don't have to tip or get dressed up" ad oriented toward white customers--that is a couple of the benefits of eating there in many people's minds, after all. Here are some examples of the other ads in the series:

Lost here is the point that McDs was a fairly early pioneer in marketing a mainstream product to a black demographic.

I know. I wish I was black just so I could shave my already-balding head completely bald and have it look good. It's undeniable, most black guys look cool with shaved heads, while unfortunately, most white guys look like retards, bikers, and/or child molesters. (Yes, I realize there's a lot of redundancy in the phrase retards, bikers, and/or child molesters.)

Facial hair on black men looks great. Especially when they get older. The white hair against the ebony skin is striking.

Naturally bald men look good. Any race/ethnicity. It's some of these guys that shave their heads bald to look tough, really shouldn't. Their heads were made for hair. They should leave it there.

I also had an early birthday or two (and with my friends) at a McDonalds. But they all had more kid-entertaining setups back then, not like the more pseudo-upscale furniture a lot of them have now.

Y'know, I lived through the 70s, and I was a kid, which means that I really liked my McDonalds (even though back then, if you dared ask for a plain burger, they gave you the death-stare, and had to write your order down on a little slip of paper to give to the grill person, which slowed the line down considerably). That ad says that you can get four complete meals (burgerlike substance, fries, and drinklike substance) for under four dollars. I think I need to call bullshiat on this. Perhaps someone has a link to the full McD menu from the Seventies? I could only find some references to burger prices.

Orange drink was a big deal for kids in the 70s and 80s. The community sports teams I was on would actually call ahead to a McDonalds to have them fill up one of those giant yellow containers with "orange drink" because it was cheaper than gatorade by a long shot.

Drank a lot of that stuff when I was a kid. Somewhere along the line it went outta style, though.

When I was working at McDons in the very early 90s, a hamburger was $0.49 and a cheeseburger was either $0.55 or 0.59, so I can totally believe that you could get pretty damn close to that in 1978.

Blacks don't tip? Neither does a table full of women who needs extra plates because they will split the appetizer between them, and who only want glasses of water. Cheapskates. Please, take you and your girlfriends to the packy and buy some wine you can take back to someone's apartment to drink. But don't take up one of my tables so you can eat cheap and tip cheap as well, and on top of it monopolize my time so I can't serve my other tables.

Actually wasn't much of a problem by the time I was working there. It actually was just a longer wait if you ordered one, because they couldn't just take the cheese off a cheeseburger and hand it to you. It had to go into the next setup for the dressing guys (the grill guys usually had at least one "dressing" worker that did all the bun and topping setup for the burgers when they were done).

We usually always had at least 2-3 hamburgers in the warmer. Longest wait was probably if someone ordered like 8 Filet-o-Fish, because normally you only had 4 of them prepared at a time.

You know who are the worst tippers on the planet? Germans. Seriously. Whether I was selling frozen lemonade as a kid or serving them drinks at a bar. Worst. Tippers. Ever. (On the rare occasion they actually tipped.)

It made watching the History Channel even more fun when it was the Hitler Channel because you got to watch them getting blown up over and over and over...

But, I digress... I think WacArnolds was much more offensive to white people because they made it appear as if we had no rhythm:

Nah, it's a perspective trick. He's holding it out at arm's length, so it's REALLY close to the camera lens, while his face is farther back, creating the illusion that the burger is really large. In reality, he's just a guy with tiny hands holding a normal burger, long arms, and a large head.

I tried grilling beans once. They all fell between the grates. You put beans on the grill, they will burn, so don't try to tell me that there's some upscale fancy-pants rich people's grill where the beans don't burn. Cuz there isn't.

Uh, didn't you put some tin foil down before you put the beans on? Someone don't be knowin' how to be dinnertimin'.

White peeps used to dress up for Church, too, when it was more of a central part of their community life.

But now, for most white folks, Church is sort of a chore to be done for your own good. For black churches it's a notable social event. As such, you dress up.

Plus, a giant burger patty does not make for a good burger.

Makes it attractive for people who over-eat, but not for a good burger. Burgers these days are 3 stories tall sometimes once you put on all the fixins. There's no need for that.

It doesn't mean that every black person shares the norms of this ethnic group, but it's decidedly NOT racist to acknowledge that the ethnic group exists and that a large proportion of African-Americans identify with it.

If an ad targeting Jews features matza, should the Jewish community get upset? If an ad for a kitchen appliance in Chinatown contains a picture of a Chinese-American eating stir-fry, should the Asian community flip their lid? Should the Muslim community go all Danish-cartoony if an ad marketing deep-fryers to shoppers in Dearborn, MI shows an Arab eating a falafel?

Why the fark does EVERYTHING we see have to go through the "OMG THAT'S RACIST!!" knee-jerk before it gets to the brain?

kellynoel: Last summer my bestie and I went on a road trip. Somewhere in Georgia we stopped at a drive through and got two double cheeseburger meals. It was six dollars and change. We were shocked. She even took a pic of the receipt and put it on Facebook.

So you got two double cheeseburgers, two fries, and two drinks for around 6 dollars, and that's somehow not a good a deal anymore? What is it supposed to cost to get that much food? It seems like about a dollar per item is just right. You each had a quick, hot meal made for you for 3 dollars a piece, and you didn't have to get out of your car.

I'm not sure if we Americans are just spoiled, or if no one in this country has ever heard of inflation. Is being able to buy a double cheeseburger for less than a dollar supposed some sort of inalienable right?

Look at that ad someone posted where the guy got all of the food for $4.00, it sounds like such a great deal right? As if, my god, there was some glorious time in this country when a cheeseburger cost a quarter and everybody was living large on just a few bucks a day. Except then you realize that $4 then is about $16 today.

And hey, I'm just going to go out on a limb here and make a wild prediction: fast food is going to continue to get more expensive. Just like everything else.

There was a popular restaurant and bar near the Castro in SF that had a very mixed crowd. One night a week was "ladies night" (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) and the bar staff (of both sexes and persuasions) consistently said it was a bad tipping night.

lohphat: It has nothing to do with race, but with culture.

Of course it does. But, it is easier for people to generate their generalities by using race, sex, or hair color or whatever the f*ck people use to generalize.

I think my motto of hating everyone first and then getting to know them on an individual basis has benefited me quite well in life.

A good little CSB thingamabob...

Marky Mark Wahlberg walked into a dealership here in Newport. He was dressed like a f*cking idiot and has, what, an 8th grade education? The sales people just ignored him. They had no idea who he was. An older salesman approached him and he said he wanted the car on the showroom floor, I think it was a Z. Paid a cash deposit and I think wrote a check for the rest.

Moral, just treat people the same because you never know the outcome even based on your wealth of experience in judging people. If more people understood that we'd be living in a better world. However, they don't, they won't, and Merry Christmas to all.

I worked at a McDonalds in the mid 70s.

Orange juice was served at breakfast only and you had to defrost it was frozen in individual plastic containers with a foil top, thick and it had a very acidic taste. Pretty nasty.

I am pretty sure quarterpounder then is the same as a quarterpounder now, no difference. The cooking method then was "sear, sizzle, seal" , frozen patties on the grill, press with spatula. When upside started to show liquid flip over and cover with an aluminum press that covered the lenthg otf the grill. Season with salt.

A small fry was in a paper bag, no cups then, The large fry is in the same container as the regular today I believe.
The large drink was is the regular size drink of today.

I do not really remember the price of the the product, girls worked the registers then, guys in back and I did not ever really eat there. One exception, we did have a "back to the fifties" sale on hamburgers one day, I think they were15 or 16 cents, people bought them by the bags full.
Minimum wage around $1.75?

Who advertised to the blacks then? Virtually nobody. The part of the U.S. I grew up in you would never see these ads for McDonalds.

according to this chart earning 4x sounds about right comparing average 1976 to 2010 actually

anyway the costs seem legit from the early ad. 30-38 cents i found for 1970-79 burger prices, so it seems conceviable that adding fries and a drink would push that to a buck total if you're lookin at comparing the relative prices of those items to they way they are today..

We could get into the shenanigans they've pulled with the stats as well as re-defining "households" and "income" in the intervening years (things such as the rise in dual-income households between 1975 and 2010, for example), but really, I don't think it matters too much. If you want to see some truly stark differences, look at average wages (not "household income") in 1900 and average wages in 2000 (in normalized dollars). It's pretty disturbing.

What strikes me the most about those ads is that the subjects are identifiably working-class. You hardly see that anymore. Today, advertising subjects tend to be of diverse ethnic backgrounds, but they all appear middle to upper-middle class in appearance and demeanor.

Speaks volumes as to the social changes that the US has seen since the '70s. Our working class is essentially invisible.

dahmers love zombie: I think I need to call bullshiat on this.

Yeah, it didn't sound right at first to me either, because by the mid-80s combo meals were in the $3 range.

But then I remembered how bad the economy was in the 70s as opposed to the 80s. When you look at the menu from 2008-2009, you saw all sorts of stuff on the dollar menu. So my thinking is if you can get four hamburgers for $4 in 2008, it makes sense that you could get 4 hamburgers, 4 fries, and 4 drinks for $4 thirty five years earlier.

No, it's just that they're behind the counter, and only eat McDonalds at a discount during their breaks. Thus they do not need to be targeted for advertising.

On a more serious note - they targeted the working class in the 70s because the working class simply did not eat out often. My family would go out to a restaurant maybe twice a year. Even when we were taking road trips to visit family, my mom packed a cooler.

Nowadays, they've buttoned up the lower-middle class and now target their advertising to upscale consumers because those are the consumers that buy the higher profit items.

Joking aside, your first point is very true, to a degree. Service sector employees are more invisible, because they're essentially "the help," meant to smooth the economy along without participating too noticeably.

I think there has also been a loss of community identity associated with the conversion away from industrial jobs. Without this, people aren't so concerned about the subjects of advertising not looking "like them." Instead, they identify with the upscale advertising subjects as aspirational figures.

Isn't it amazing how it is essentially assumed now that road trips are going to almost exclusively involve restaurant meals? Packing meals for the road seems somewhat alien to me.

Perhaps less skin ink equals more tips? That and the daggers coming from your eyes when they sit down because you know they are going to order lemon water. Perhaps your host could sit them next to the kitchen door, as that seems to be the super awesome seat they try to stick my wife and I into constantly (I have an ugly face). It was indeed - see John Caple's "Tested Advertising Methods" or "Ogilvy on Advertising" by David Ogilvy. There's a reason the Marlboro Man was the most successful print advertising campaign of all time, and you can see variations on that today in the print design theories of guys like Mario Garcia and Lou Silverstein.

RobSeace: untaken_name: Easy Reader: Was there ever a time when "dinnertimin'" was an actual noun?

Of course not, moran. It's a verb.

No, it's a gerund, so it's both a noun and a verb at the same time...

No, it's still a verb, it can just act as a noun sometimes. From the link you helpfully provided:

As applied to English, it refers to the use of a verb (in its -ing form) as a noun (for example, the verb "learning" in the sentence "Learning is an easy process for some").

It's still a verb. It was never "an actual noun", even though it's a gerund. Thanks for playing, though. We have some lovely parting gifts for you.

AnotherDisillusionedCollegeStudent: What strikes me the most about those ads is that the subjects are identifiably working-class. You hardly see that anymore. Today, advertising subjects tend to be of diverse ethnic backgrounds, but they all appear middle to upper-middle class in appearance and demeanor.

Speaks volumes as to the social changes that the US has seen since the '70s. Our working class is essentially invisible.

We don't manufacture anything anymore. There is no working class, only the "service industry".

Thanks NAFTA!

SH: If the picture had a white family in it subby would claim it was racist because they ignore the blacks.

This entire thread is all kinds of fail.

Indeed. It also ignores the fact that advertisers target specific demographics with messages that resonate with that demographic in order to increase sales. An ad for Schlitz Malt Liquor featuring a black man is not a racist ad if the vast majority of SML drinkers are black men. If Schlitz ran ads for SML using white guys, they would not have been as successful. If advertisers intentionally insulted their target audience they would be driving away business and losing money, a rather stupid and short-sighted way to run a business. Some ads may have been unintentionally racist, but that's probably because some white ad company tried to be "hip" without good cultural knowledge of the target demographic (see: engrish). The same shait happens today.

Also, some of you young whipper-snappers may be ignorant of the culture of the 70's in regard to the advent of the black community's incorporation into "mainstream" America. McD's was a ground breaker and pretty damn smart to play to black families as they became an increasingly more important consumer group. Errr, no. A gerund or present participle maybe, but not a verb. And the copy makes it look like an actual noun.

Wouldn't that be an issue with Europeans in general? Because I'm told that tipping is basically unknown in Europe (and Japan), so people from there would not understand that they're supposed to do it.

That excuse works exactly once. But when you spend your six farking weeks of vacation in my Florida town every year and still leave a (literal) pocket change tip on the bill for your multihour meal with copious alcohol for you and your 8 closest friends it begins to wear thin. Learn something about the place you come year after year. I was only a bus boy, but you can bet that some of the wait staff followed some people into the parking lot to have a discussion about how you can't leave $0.89 on a $400 dinner bill. The restaurant eventually had inserts printed in German for the menus politely explaining about tipping, and I know for a fact that they told one repeat offender that he was no longer welcome in the establishment.

/biatch please, I recognize your wearing-black-socks-with-sandals ass from last week, and last year for that matter.

Ok before the race cards get played, it can be said that Danes don't tip either -- it's cultural -- they aren't used to it since they live in a world of included service charges already in the price. They just pay the price.

The question is if it's a cultural tendency in the US black population, why is it?

2012-06-27 11:11:08 PM
Well I would think that by the time society is down to being racist because an ad drops a few "g"s, and informs a family of a restaurant where there is no tipping, then I guess society is doing pretty damn well.

And I gather we are now in this non-racist heaven because schools taught people how to find racism where none existed.

And believe it or not you young whipper snappers, a lot of people in the 70s were actually a hell of a lot less racist and sexist than people are today.

In the 70s, I was 10-20 years old.

I didn't say that no one was racist, nor did I even say a majority of people were not racist (but I suspect a majority were not racist.)

What I'm saying is we had the Freedom Riders, and the Star Trek Kiss, and the Civil Rights Act, and we had 1968, and 1969, and All in the Family, and many many other aspects of our culture that were absolutely not racist, or sexist, or anything-ist. We had feminism. The Equal Pay Act. We had Stonewall.

Right now, "the youngsters" at FARK and elsewhere write as if they were the first generation to ever not be racist, or sexist, or anything-ist. And actually when I read the news, and various blogs, I wonder what the hell happened. Sexism seems worse than before (Brogrammers), racism seems worse than before (a response to crime rates? rap? the depression?)

We've made enormous strides in the past 10 years for gay rights, but I'm not all that impressed with the progress on race, and no, the current FARK youngsters did not discover racism, or take the first steps against it, and near as I can tell all the important strides were taken in the 70s OR BEFORE, and mostly before.

The main thing to stop racism since the 70s were not actual steps by Congress or actual steps by the people, but merely the children of the 30s growing up beyond WWII to teach the children of the 60s to teach the children of the 90s.

All of which is to say these ads were not racist then or now, what we mainly have is ignorant kids, sure they are the generation that fought against racism, ignorant about what happened before them.

And that's not new either. That's probably how I was in the 70s and 80s and 90s and 00s about the generations before me.

I think racism has definitely improved. Most of the structural (legal) changes necessary for racial equality happened in the 50s and 60s. The 70s and 80s were definitely more about society catching up with the law. But I most certainly remember racial and ethnic jokes being told in the open with barely a look over the shoulder in the 70s. By the end of the 80s that was gone, remains pretty much gone. More real evidence is the general acceptance and banality interracial marriage across pretty much the entire US. Even into the 80s and early 90s it was not uncommon to encounter someone who'd say something about how they couldn't accept a family member marrying into another race.

There has been no backslide with regard to racism, IMHO. What I see now in the mainstream is more or less honest debate about the reasons for racial inequality.

Sexism is another, far more complicated story.

You may be right, but again, that doesn't disagree with my main premise, that today's kiddies are not the racial injustice warriors they believe themselves to be and the 70s were not rife with racism AS evidence by this ad. Today's kiddies main fight against racism was accomplished by growing up with parents and schools born of the 60s and 70s.

And it's not clear to me that the 00s and 10s are demonstrably more free of racism than the 70s were if you are using things like this ad as a reference, or even FARK threads. I still see lots of racist comments in FARK threads that I would have been shocked to read in the 70s and still shocked 40 years later.
