Or stood there, basking in the noise, then claim tomorrow he "didn't hear anything" inappropriate.

There are some other differences, but it was a classy move on Obama's part. I'm sure some will claim it was a a calculated maneuver on his part, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. If he had egged the audience on it would only have provided the GOP with ammunition against him.

So are they all; all patriotic Americans.

No. No he's not. He doesn't give a fark about this country, he cares about money and power.

Romney would have said something like "we'll have to take Obama on his word when he says that he is a patriot" (or x-ian or born in America or whatever)

Hasn't he already gone further and basically said, "It's not my job to correct everyone"? I think that was in regard to Trump if I'm not mistaken.

Well, then our choices are he's genuinely a good guy, or a smarter strategist. I can live with either.

No, Mr. Romney is a patriotic American

Yeah, I don't think so. He's actively rooting for the country to fail so he can become President and make things even worse. Take out the wanting to become President bit and you have Al Queda.

I'm ok with this.
I don't agree with the sentiment, but politically its the right move.

I'm pretty sure that proper use of the phrase "paying it forward" would require that Obama had done this prior to McCain doing it.

But to the point, I do as well. I don't agree with all of his policy or administrative decisions, but there's no President where that'd be the case anyway. I do find him to be a genuine, honest, mostly normal person, especially as politicians go, and find the conspiracy theories about him to be even further out in fantasy land than the Bush people were. BDS was pretty silly, but ODS is epic.

Exactly.

I had major respect for John McCain in '08 when he stood up for Obama.

It was the last, glimmering flicker of the smart, respectable man who I could have voted for in 2000.

He's like GWB if GW hadn't been overwhelmed by his staff's policy desires and the requirements of the office from day one. I'm sure that GWB would also be a great drinking buddy. Or, well, would have been, I guess? Isn't he a non-drinker now? Prolly a lot of interesting stories, though.

That's the thing--class is calculated. Class is taking the high road when you didn't have to, when you could have gone with the flow. Or when you could have said nothing and stood there with your Wasilla-born, PTA board biatch smirk on your face.

born_yesterday: That's the thing--class is calculated.

Calculated has a bad connotation these days. I'd prefer to say that "having class" is an *assertive action*. It's being the better person when not being the better person may not cost you anything with those others present.

McCain paid it forward to Obama by being a gentleman. Obama is paying it forward to the next president (be it in 4+ years or 4+ months) by being a gentleman. That's how paying it forward works. At least as described to me by HJO thru the TV screen after tons of booze.

They are the kind of folks who are "besieged by life". The sort of folks like the one noted in Farker's anecdote from a few days back , who said that when one of his business-owning friends, who was complaining about the estate tax, made to realize that said friend would never make enough money for the estate tax to apply to him, got mad at said Farker.

The folks referred to in the ol' saying that "Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires."

And it doesn't help that their primary news venues are more than happy to reinforce the conclusion that the country (nay, the world) has never been as bad as it is now and whoever's fault it is, they must be different than they themselves are.

Not necessarily... He may have just smugly smiled and refused to address the issue. That way, he would have been able to pretend to come to Obama's defense a few days after the incident, while still scoring points off the asshats at the rally...

Obama, on the other hand, actually has some class. Maybe if you Republicans would get some, you might get some votes, along with some electable candidates...
