Host: bigpete53
Description: Shuck me, suck me, eat me raw NOLA Fark party at Cooter Brown's at 7:00 pm on 7/14/2012. Oyster bar, great food, and 400+ types of beer. Join the fun at your own risk, and bring $1.25 for the streetcar
Date/Time: July 14, 2012 - 07:00 PM (local time)
Party Info: megalynn44 is traveling into town for this one, and we welcome all who are willing to travel to our fair city to brave the July heat for some great food and wonderful booze.

If we can convince the assembled masses, we might hop the streetcar or get a cab down to Cat's Meow for some Saturday night web cam karaoke. Pitchers will be purchased at Cooter's to encourage this behavior.

No one does it like NOLA!

Location: Cooter Brown's Tavern

theflatline: before hitting the dungeon at 3 am to pick up hipster chicks who thought they were making the scene.

My stories from The Dungeon are equally legendary, creepy, and outright insane. Part of me wants to write about it right now.

I'm heading out for some cocktails, so maybe when I get back and am drunk enough, I'll tell a story you already know the ending to.

coco ebert: Great cheese and wine selection.

Rouse's has an actual sommelier on staff. At least that's what I'm told. Judging from the selection I believe it.

Your comment about "Whole Paycheck" is spot-on. While Rouse's has a lot of bourgeoisie finery, it's still at heart a grocery store. I love that I can spend $200 or $15, depending on whether I'm eating Hamburger Helper and PBR or cooking a salmon dinner with wine for my friends. No pretentious bullsh*t.

They're also open until midnight, which has come in handy.

Bonus CSB: When the store was still the Sewell car dealership, I lived right down the street, in a condo on Lafayette and Barrone. Back then you could buy a decent if small condo for 170k, or about $900 per month. There's also a Triumph dealership, which happens to be the brand of bike I ride these days. When I lived there I had NONE OF THIS, and can't realistically afford to move back. Kinda pisses me off, because back then living in the CBD meant your life was over at 6pm. There was Chuck's Sports Bar (24-7), but that was about it. If you were hungry, Italian Pie was open until 10 or so. OTher than that, you had to entertain yourself.

theflatline: Then I when i was a Manager at Pat Os in the Late 90s, it was always my go to bar when I needed to pop out for a little dutc courage during a long shift.

I think you're referring to the other Johnny White's, on St. Peter, caddy-corner to Pat O's. That one is still in business and always will be. One of the bartenders, affectionately known as "Taco" will be there until he dies.

Sports Bar was that dive on the corner of Bourbon and Orleans. That's the one that closed.

coco ebert: dickfreckle: It's also one hell of a store. I more or less live on their meals to go. The prices on regular groceries (chips, bread, Hot Pockets) are only slightly more expensive than Wal-Mart, which is a nightmare to shop at. Seriously, we have the worst Wal-Mart in the history of America. But I mostly like shopping at Rouse's because I know a significant portion of my dollar stays in my state, whether to farmers, fishermen, or the ownership itself. I'm a big fan.

The Rouse's on Baronne is a beautiful, beautiful grocery store. Great cheese and wine selection. Reasonable prices, like you said- it's no Whole Paycheck. Also, they make the best burrito around.

My town has 3 options: Walmart, Winn-Dixie, or Rouse's. Rouse's wins hands down. One time they flubbed up a fruit order I had placed, and a corporate rep called me back within 3 minutes of my sending an email, and someone was on my doorstep with a huge box of what I needed the next morning. Free of charge. They win!

dickfreckle: Karma Chameleon: Oysters in July? You're doing it wrong!

One of the many reasons this myth persists is that it came along when methods of refrigeration in the supply chain were either non-existent or not viable. These days you can eat an oyster any damn day of the year you want.

And I do.

The only real requirement is that it's alive when cooked/served raw.

And...not exactly a requirement, but good sense...that it's not spawning. A spawning oyster is scrawnier and more watery. It also contains more bad bacteria. Thanks to modern aquaculture (as opposed to refrigeration), however, spawning time can be controlled and doesn't necessarily have to be during the summer months.

Well, I learned something today! I really don't know much about oysters except how to eat the magnificent little bastards.

I'm like a dog. If you sit me in front of an endless supply, I'll eat them until I puke. And then come back for more. I can't be reasoned with. I can't be bargained with. I'll just keep coming until one of us is dead.

/wonders if Cooter Brown's serves them raw *checks Google for menu*

THEY DO!

See ya'll then, Farkers.

BTW, do any NOLA farkers also ride motorcycles? I'm trying to decide whether to ride up there or take the streetcar. If I ride, I can't drink much beer, and that sort of defeats the purpose of a Fark party.

But if there are other riders I'd love to kill two birds with one stone and meet some Fark Motorcyclists. In a worst-case scenario I can call a buddy to ride my bike back to his place while I get loaded on Nola Blonde and then accidentally piss in a laundry hamper.

Just make sure the venue is actually in NOLA, and not 20 minutes outside the city proper in the 'burbs. Otherwise you'll have a thread full of whiny coont hipster urbanites biatching about how inconvenient it is for them to attend, like the Philly party did.

Wish I could join!!!! Cooter Brown's has one of the best beer selections I've ever seen, and uptown is definitely better than the Quarter for a Fark party.

Stumble around the corner to Miss Mae's for the cheapest well drinks in town as well as one hell of a juke box. I heard Slayer>Sinatra one night in that place.

2012-07-13 01:32:31 PM
I am told Cooter Brown's is a lot of fun. Can't wait!

I've never been to a fark party before, how does this work? Just show up and look for other sarcastic, drunk people? I can just imagine, showing up at 7pm on a Friday at Cooter's and shaking tons of people's hands only to find out that the party is in the back or something. Name tags? How will I know who BigPete is? (besides, big)

Make the sort of joke that you would only utter here on Fark, and never in normal company. Hell, just waltz in, lower your voice an octave, and bellow "You gonna get raped." If the cops show up or you get kicked in the balls, the party is out back.

There's a possibility I can't attend, but I'm pretty certain I can.

Dahnkster: Ain't there no more....

I walk or roll past the old K&B building every day. They were just being taken over by Rite-Aid when I showed up in the 90s. I love hearing old ladies wax nostalgic about it. That "K&B purple" is still a known color even to children should tell you everything you need to know about this town.

Yeah, I got the fifty dollahs... :P

I had a few bottles of Schweggman's vodak, from the Napoleon location across from Tip's. Jesus it was terrible, but I was poor then and besides, how many grocery stores make their own rotgut? Good times. And for the record, Sav-a-Center sucked balls.

Buddy D is terribly, terribly missed. I loved that man deeply. I only hope for an afterlife, because the idea of him peering through clouds and watching 2009 just makes me happy.

2012-07-13 09:43:58 PM
I emailed bigpete53 about this, but I probably won't make it. My father-in-law ended his fight against cancer on Tuesday, and the funeral was today. I would love to be there, but this is obviously a tough time for my family. My wife is six months pregnant, so this has been especially hard on her. I would love to make it given that I really want to meet so many of you and Cooter's is one of my favorite places on the whole planet, but my wife has lost her father and my children have lost their granddad before they really got old enough to truly know him. If you could find it in yourselves to raise a pint to him, I'd be grateful. I don't want to rai. On the parade, so let's celebrate Drew Brees being with us for another five years. WHO DAT?

fistbump--and this sober nola farker raises a monster to his honor.

for those of you that have never been to cooters--y'all gonna have a great time. parking is tricky--one idea may be to park along st charles and catch the street car a few blocks...

ALSO---not to detract anyone from coming--but beware--a pair of black guys have been doing armed robberies in the immediate vicinity--so BOLO, and walk the girls to their cars...

I'm gonna try my best to go, but i have a huge auction in baton rouge in the morning. state surplus, FTW.

We'll be in the back bar area. I'll put up a table tent or three so you can find us. I'll be in a red, white, and blue plaid shirt, and with my wife. See photo below to see my ugly mug and the shirt.

Bring $1.25 cash so you can ride to Cat's Meow when Cooter's inevitably slows down around 10 pm! The wife and I got a sitter for the night and a hotel room downtown, so we're in for the long haul. I'm getting sauced. Let's have fun!

I love Andygator. It has this weird ability to be high gravity and yet still have a somewhat clean finish. Big fan.

My go-to in the summer is Golden. Sometimes you want an easy beer on the hot days, though we've kind of been blessed weather-wise, thus far (except for rain). Never thought I'd be calling friends up north or out west and bragging about how relatively comfy it's been here the past few weeks. Anyway, Golden is sorta like a Bud you can chug after doing yardwork, but it still tastes good.

I hit Jockimo in colder months, or when I need a fix. I'm also a big Hopitoulas fan and am glad to see these IPA's being increasingly available all over down and uptown. BTW. NOLA Blonde is now in cans, which is awesome for mobile drinkers like myself. I often grab one from the Exxon at Lee Circle, next to the old K&B building at Lee Circle.

bigpete53: dickfreckle: dickfreckle: I often grab one from the Exxon at Lee Circle, next to the old K&B building at Lee Circle.

Really, man?

Redundant!

I filled up there today. Grabbed a beer, too. I love that station.

Far cry from what it used to be - a nearly derelict station you'd expect to find 30 miles outside of Modesto or something. There was that equally useless Texaco across the street - still empty. In those days, the Exxon store would wrap straight-jacket-strength tape around the canned beers to keep you from buying an individual one. What the fark was that all about, in this town?

For some reason I can't recall the name of the company that runs that Exxon now, but I know they rock. Every time I walk in there people are smiling at me or some such. This may be because I'm intolerably handsome. :P

/btw, add me to your list thingie
