It does that for all filtered stuff... You never see the post-filter view until it's really posted...

Why they filter long strings of bits, I have no idea, but I've seen it before... I think it tries to turn them into corresponding ASCII characters...

We don't use base 10 because of fingers. There have been lots of base systems used by humans. Base 10 was intentionally standardized because of broad applicability and easy divisibility. You can still see the echos of old systems in our languages though. Tried counting past 20 in French flatly? Or to 12 in English?

It's true that we shouldn't assume an alien race uses base 10. We could "explain" to them that we use base 10 first, and then do everything in base 10 from that point forward. Since we're going to have to either use base 2 or "teach" them what base we use, we might as well go with base 10. Unless, of course, we just go with base 2, but I personally think that's a bit silly. We're going to have to teach them an alphabet anyway, not to mention math symbols like +,-,=,*, so I fail to see the advantage of NOT teaching them a few digits as well, while we're at it.

So far as I know, there's no real argument why one base is "superior" to any other apart from "it should be a power of 2" and "it should have a lot of unique prime divisors" (which makes 6 a reasonably good candidate since it's 2*3, for example). 10 (5*2) does at least have that second argument going for it.

Math uses whatever base it wants anyway. That's why we have fractions. 40/10 is the same as 48/12, but one adjusts our base 10 into a transliterated form of base 12.

Yea, but dividing the base by 2 and getting a non fraction odd number was cosidered a plus for whatever reason.

Heck, you could say the sun orbits the earth and not be wrong but it would make less intuitive sense and the math would get wayyyy harder for the poor bastards at NASA.

What exactly are you attempting?

For the numbers 1-15, a unary representation (1, 11, 111, etc) followed by a 0, followed by the number's binary representation in four bits (0001, 0010, 0011, etc), followed by a 0. Prepend six zeroes to this string (which is actually how the number 0 would be represented in this scheme).

Divide this into 24-character chunks with a newline between them, and wrap them all in a tt tag (the CODE button on Fark's editing toolbar). I wouldn't include the newlines or the TT tag in the actual message; they're just there to keep things looking manageable on a message board.

In layman's terms, this is an attempt to show that this string of 1s and 0s that we're sending out over radio is a series of binary numbers. I do this by counting from 0 to 15.

Ned Stark: Base 10 was intentionally standardized because of broad applicability and easy divisibility.

If that were the reason, we'd be using Base 12? 12 evenly divides by 2,3,4, or 6; 10 evenly divides by 2 ad 5.

In some ways we do use Base 12 and Base 60 (which is 12 x the missing number in the evenly-divisible-by list above). 12 hours on the clock, 60 minutes in an hour, 12 inches in a foot.

Americans also use Base 2 a lot; just look at liquid and weight measures. 16 ounces in a pound, 128 ounces in a gallon, and so forth. All powers of two.

We probably use Base 10 because we learn to count using our fingers.

And some of us try to force everything into Base 10 because they hate the spice of life.

Serious Post on Serious Thread: And the only universal language of math is binary. So drop this "to 10" crap. unless by "10" you meant "2', in which case carry on.

You do understand, I hope, that base is a matter of notation, not mathematics. There isn't really anything truly mathematical about base 2 or base 10 or base 731, anymore than there's something innately mathematical about using two perpendicular line segments ("+") to mean addition. That's convention, not math. It no more shows off some fundamental understanding of mathematics to use base 2 than it does to use "-" to mean subtraction. Or perhaps you don't,

It IS true, yes, that 2 is the smallest possible integer to use as a base, but that's no less trivial than saying "It's true that 1+1 = 2." And aliens would be no more impressed by either observation.

The only advantage to using base 2 that I'm aware of is that it makes it unnecessary to teach the aliens any other base, but it's so ridiculously easy to do THAT that I really fail to see why it's a selling point.

0
1 = I
2 = II
3 = III
4 = IIII
5 = IIIII
6 = IIIII I
7 = IIIII II
8 = IIIII III
9 = IIIII IIII
10 = IIIII IIIII

There. Done.

If there's some other advantage to base 2 which I did not already cover, please let me know, so I can understand your perplexing fascination with it.

By the way, I would say the same of pi. It's such a fundamental thing that pi is an irrational number equal to 3.14... that the only reason to talk to the aliens about pi is to get the silly stuff out of the way so we can talk about -real- math. Knowing the value of pi is literally caveman stuff. Obviously if we can send radio signals into space we've know about pi for thousands of years. Yet for some reason people are always like, "Oooooh, tell the aliens we know about pi!"

downstairs: Never heard that before. I always thought base 10 was merely because we had 10 fingers. Its arbitrary.

It's not totally arbitrary, though the fact that we have ten fingers is not mere coincidence. But we haven't always used base 10. The Babylonian used base 60. That's why there are sixty seconds in a minute and sixty minutes in an hour. Roman numerals are closer to being base 5 than anything else, if they can be said to have any base. The Mayans used base 20. Granted, the 5, 10, and 20 bases all probably come from the number of digits on one hand, both hands, or hands and feet, respectively.

There is, however, one other reason why base 10 could be argued to be a better choice than, for example, base 9 or 11, and that is that 10 is the product of two distinct prime numbers (2 and 5). Of course, so are 6 and 15, so it's not enough of a reason all by itself to make base 10 that much more appealing.

downstairs: If anything, binary makes the most sense. Because on/off, duality, dark/light... lots of stuff in nature can be boiled down to 2's.

I would think base 2 (binary) is the only universal base. I'd assume most advanced species would use this in some part of their technology.

Base 2 is universal in the sense that it's the lowest possible base, yes. If I had to guess what base an alien race was going to use, and I had NO other information to go on, then yes, I'd guess base 2. If, on the other hand, I knew for a fact that they had two hands with five fingers on each hand, then 10 would be a better guess. Since all of our attempts to communicate with aliens make it a point of telling them we have 10 fingers, I think the "We have to use base 2 or they won't understand us!" argument is pretty weak.

I rickrolled them. Hey, it's new to them...

Medical Toilet: For what it's worth, I'd rather have aliens' first impression of earth be... well... /b/ than the Republican Party.

AND I'd rather let them know your mom's a whore, but something tells me they know that already.

I came here for the news broadcast from Independence Day asking people not to shoot at alien crafts.

/Leaving disappointed.

Infernalist: Ever wander past the monkey cage at the zoo and they all freak out and start with their shrieking and hooting and all?

Don't forget the poo.
They like to throw poo.

This is a great idea. The aliens will receive it and realize there really is no intelligent life on this blue marble of ours and will decide that there is no point in coming here.

rudemix: Dear Aliens...the darker lighter the skin the more delicious the person the easier the probing will be. Love, Republicans Democrats

sandbar67: Dear Aliens: I am stuck here waiting for my ride on this God-forsaken planet. Please come pick me up ASAP.

There are plenty of ways to remove yourself.

KangTheMad: t's entirely possible they have a generation of idiots too, you know.

What generation of idiots is that genius level?

We traced the call, and it's coming from... inside the planet. Get out! Get out now!

Ok, unlike your neighborhood teabagger, I don't get it. At all.

Some explain it in simple words, maybe using sock puppets, for the terminally WTF is it all about, Alfie's.

I thought these kinds of signals degrade after a few light years, long before they reach anywhere interesting.

2012-06-26 08:52:00 PM

Fluorescent Testicle: Aliens aside, the Wow signal is fascinating and I'd love to know what it really was.

Well, me and every other person who's ever heard of it, I suppose.

I couldn't agree more. It's just so fascinating and mysterious. We get a signal of incredible intensity, clearly artificial, almost certainly extraterrestrial, and on the exact frequency we'd expect to be used if aliens were announcing "Here we are!" It's heard once and then never repeats.

So farking curious...
