HairBolus: It is all part of the Foxification of politics - conservatives really like their female information sources, in news, punditry, or politics to be bimbos.

And who won the title that year? Fox & Friends host Gretchen Carlson.

Gretchen Carlson, a national level violinist who graduated cum laude from Stanford and then went to Oxford, and ended up getting a job acting the part of a barbie doll so dumb she had to google the meaning of the word ignoramous.

What do conservatives have against strong, intelligent, talented women?

whidbey: You know, as an aside from the derp in the article I thankfully didn't read, it occurs to me that in an enlightened 21st century we really should be doing away with bullsh*t like beauty pageants.

Who cares? If you don't like them, don't participate or watch.

It's not like the toddlers and tiaras nonsense, where little girls are forced to dress up and put on makeup by mommies. The contestants in miss USA/America are all grown women.

HotWingConspiracy: whidbey: HotWingConspiracy: The bigger question is - who the fark watches the Ms America pageant?

And who shows up to events because "ms america" is there?

TV ratings indicate that not only did the 2011 Miss America Pageant on ABC enjoy a whopping 47 percent increase in viewers over last year, but in the battle of the beauty contests, Miss America also decked Donald Trump's Miss USA Pageant last year by more than 1 million viewers. Both contests took place at Planet Hollywood.

A lot of idiots are still stuck in the 20th century. This shouldn't be shocking to either of us.

I know I'm jaded and maybe mildly ADD, but I really can't fathom sitting down and watching that.

Ice skating is really big, too. Maybe we'll have our first Triple Axel President in the next decade or so.

You don't understand, whid. They have a TALENT portion now. That means the chicks broads ladies have to demonstrate a talent beyond just looking pretty to win.

// IMO, the bigger problem was that they allow surgically-enhanced ladies to compete
// pageantry is pageantry - it'd be nice if there was a Miss Brains 2012 as well, but whaddaya gonna do?

Yes, they're all grown women who think that, for themselves at least, an integral part of the path to success and being recognized as a role model is to walk around on national television in a bikini and heels.

It's not comparable to slavery. Participation in pageants like Miss America is entirely voluntary.

Things like Toddlers in Tiaras, on the other hand...

On a related note:
"Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household* than was an African American baby born after the election of the USA's first African-American President, according to the document"

What exactly do you need cleared up about my initial post? What did I leave out that makes it hard for you to understand?

Sure, I'm an instigator. But it's only because most of the people around here are completely caught up in their own nonsense to think about anything. For instance:

No, I'm the new guy. The old guy thinks the nation's already farked. He's pretty sure he was right. He's watched an entire generation of people with no critical thinking skills elevate themselves to positions of power.

And now, we're watching people with even less sense pull insane shiat out of comments that isn't there. I like how you wanted to pin me as a sub-Republican bot spewing the "both parties evil, vote Republican" meme. But that's not what I said.

What I said is that both parties have their own interesting problems with cognitive dissonance in how they approach certain problems that we've got in how we function as a society these days. I never advocated one view over the other, merely that both are inherently internally inconsistent.

Sorry you missed it.

I did. You don't have a point other than "beauty pageants are bad", which I agree with, but I'm not going to pretend that a voluntary contest is a matter of economic or social justice that the public should demand be stopped.

Voluntary or not, you continually miss the point about how we are turning a blind eye to an ingrained, institutional sexism by saying "don't watch or participate in it."

It is the EXACT same attitude as I pointed out earlier about slavery.

And the party that talks of being of "the people" is often incredibly elitist in its definition of who is fit to run for office.

Either way you slice it, we're farked as a nation. Within twenty years, almost certain of it.

Saddly, I am quite certain that beauty queens can't fark things up any worse than the crop of politicians we have today. That being said, as for the picture you displayed above, I am almost tempted to grab a shovel and dig Reagan up to put him back in office. Because Reagan in his current condition would still provide better policies and leadership than what we're getting from that M-Word we have in the whitehouse now.
