Our politics is getting dumber.

With the internet, any retarded idea can give morons the impression of legitimacy, and so become easier to convince to vote for the loon. Before the internet, it was limited to HAM radio and a handful of people living in compounds.

You know, as an aside from the derp in the article I thankfully didn't read, it occurs to me that in an enlightened 21st century we really should be doing away with bullsh*t like beauty pageants.

Meh, getting on someone's ass about being in beauty contests is essentially being angry about them having stupid priorities as a kid (the contests top out at about 18). It's just a hobby, don't see why anyone would care about it one way or another.

//Not any weirder than some of the other media exposures people have leveraged into a career in politics or entertainment.

It's funny that the party that wants to remove things like direct election of senators because it is too populist likes to promote candidates that are the exact definition of populist derpitude.

And the party that talks of being of "the people" is often incredibly elitist in its definition of who is fit to run for office.

Either way you slice it, we're farked as a nation. Within twenty years, almost certain of it.

Our stupid-ass form of politics is making us more tribal. As part of that, we demand to know which public figures are on "our side," regardless of the triviality of their position in the public eye.

The problem is that it isn't the same qualifications as actually holding an office.

What's that? They actually are the same qualifications? I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

It is all part of the Foxification of politics - conservatives really like their female information sources, in news, punditry, or politics to be bimbos.

And who won the title that year? Fox & Friends host Gretchen Carlson.

The success of Carlson's network can in part explain why Miss America contestants are now chasing careers in politics. Carlson and her other 24-hour cable news cohorts from across the political spectrum have turned politics into entertainment and politicians into TV personalities. Candidates and pols are expected to "always be on," sound bites win the day, and female politicians in particular must look the part-qualities Miss America contestants actually strive to develop while still in their 20s.
While the article strains with a "BOTH SIDES" presentation, beauty contestants are overwhelmingly conservative. If some girl wins a state title but not the national one they dare not offend the folks back home spouting liberal ideas - they stand to make money appearing at things like the grand reopening of car dealerships and don't want to queer those deals.

I'd be okay with pageants if they were pageants instead of these weird events we have now. Get some pretty women aged 20-30 up on stage naked. Have the nation judge them American Idol style, winner gets 150k.

At this point it's so meta, it's *beyond* national masturbation. It's like our country masturbates to videos taken of photos of its own junk held up in a mirror, once a year. And like most batin' sessions, we all promptly forget about it, clean up and move on to something less trite. Like Lost, or Megashark vs. Giant Octopus.

TV ratings indicate that not only did the 2011 Miss America Pageant on ABC enjoy a whopping 47 percent increase in viewers over last year, but in the battle of the beauty contests, Miss America also decked Donald Trump's Miss USA Pageant last year by more than 1 million viewers. Both contests took place at Planet Hollywood.

A lot of idiots are still stuck in the 20th century. This shouldn't be shocking to either of us.
