One more reason to let the airports handle security. TSA agents get away with crap that would get a private sector employee fired in a heartbeat.

Really? So because President Obama is the President, this woman can go against TSA policy and also laugh at the outcome of her ignorance? I see your point and you're right, if a Republican was in office, this woman would know her role... In fact, the guy's Grandfather wouldn't even have died, had a Republican been in office, so none of this would have happened.

Makes perfect and logical sense.

This is BIG GOVERNMENT'S America. This is the America that was created from whiners who see something, and instead of admitting the real reason and fixing the problem, decide to blame it on someone else because it's easier than actually lifting a finger and fixing a problem. This is the America created by lazy, self entitled people, Republican AND Democrat, who have given up on actually working and have chosen to sue themselves into the "American Dream".

What ever happened to responsibility? You know, the thing where you sack up and take it on the chin when you screw up and then work to fix the problem? The blame game $#!+ is pathetic. Quit pointing fingers and waiting for someone else to fix OUR problems. Voting another corrupt person into an office built to coddle corrupt people isn't going to do anything for US. All it's going to do is give another lazy person a lifetime of pension, that WE are going to pay for. When are WE going to wake up and decide that enough is enough? I'm tired of paying for their crappy decisions that hurt ME and also their Holidays and Vacations and Retirements and Mansions... give me a break.

It's time to cut the cord on Republican AND Democrat

THIS! I refuse to fly for personal travel anymore. Also, I travel by car for business travel if they allow it. Our travel policy has a certain mileage range that you must take a car, a certain mileage range that it's your call which you want to do, and a mileage range that requires a plane. During the last several years, partly because of additional hours spent in the airport at the hands of TSA goons, those distances have continued to creep up. We're to the point now that an 8 hour drive is the cutoff point between having your choice and taking the plane. It was 5 hours just 3 years ago.

We used to have the option from Madison to Chicago, now it's car only.
We used to have mandatory plane to the Twin Cities, now it's an option.
Madison to Bloomington? Used to be plane, now choice.
Madison to Kansas City? Used to be plane, now choice.
Madison to Louisville? Used to be plane, now choice.
Everyone takes a car when they have the option.

F*ck the TSA.

It's a federal government agency. It can't be killed, it can't be stopped, and it can never be eradicated. It's an immutable physical law, like heat only flowing in one direction.

This is why people should be railing against "more government" in general. We don't need more government, we need better government from what's already in place. Even if we re-purposed the TSA to clean and paint public high schools year round we'd come out ahead and probably wouldn't be any less safe for it.

The TSA was created as part of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act, sponsored by Don Young in the United States House of Representatives and Ernest Hollings in the Senate, passed by the 107th U.S. Congress, and signed into law by President George W. Bush on November 19, 2001. Originally part of the United States Department of Transportation, the TSA was moved to the Department of Homeland Security on March 25, 2003.

You were saying?

Would an x-ray machine actually reveal anything about the internal contents of a sealed metal container?

Nope.

The answer is: Depends on the metal and thickness.

If it's a relatively thin aluminum container (not unlikely), then yes, the xray will show small bone fragments and a relatively uniform powder, combined with either the portable mass spectrometer (thanks, NASA) or the little swab explosives detectors, it can be ruled out as a potentially hazardous item.

Nofun: A lot of TSA hate going around here. People claiming they would rather drive 1000 miles than deal with the TSA. BS.

I fly all over the world for work. Every TSA agent I encounter is professional and courteous. I carry equipment for work through the security checkpoints that always gets a second look, and scanned, and wiped, etc.

Honestly, we have it pretty good here. What this foolish agent did was wrong, and she should be fired; however, at least incidents like this are isolated.

Try getting through immigration, customs, and security in a foreign country like Saudi Arabia. Do it ONCE and you'll realize just how good we have it here. They openly scream at people and actually seem to relish it. I actually saw a guy jump over the desk and holler at people to get in a straight line and didn't stop until everyone was perfectly in line. Then 15 minutes later he did the same thing. That line alone took me the better part of an hour. What a nightmare.

/Keep griping folks, you don't have it that bad.
//And fire this stupid agent. I don't want someone like that securing my airports anyways.

I'm going to seriously doubt you fly much at all if you think TSA is even moderately acceptable or effective.

theorangeshield: You're joking? You would rather drive 1000 miles because you don't want to go through an x-ray machine?

I drive 1700 miles to Seattle in part because of the TSA. Hour long lines to get through security, seemingly random confiscation of property and a host of other weird things that have happened to me over the years. A couple of those encounters have gotten really nasty. There are a bunch of other reasons why I dislike flying, but the TSA is the straw that broke the camel's back.

And, you're really already being punished. Punished for nothing more than trying to travel about. I guess it's a matter of priorities or thinking big-picture or something. I can tell you that they will not stop with the airports. When is it enough for people to cry uncle?

Oh no....I was just giving my personal take/preference. Only an idiot would say that the groping is okay for everyone, and it obviously needs to stop.

For me, I'd rather be groped with my clothes on that have to stand in a slow moving line. Unfortunately, I always get both.

But, that's really a big part of the problem. Now, I realize people have to travel for business and have no way out. I got it.

As far as those traveling for vacation, though, I think everyone should just stop. Do it for a year. Won't kill anyone. Go visit your own state.

So long as people tolerate this kind of crap, they really are part of the problem. We cannot afford to accept this type of cattle/rancher treatment from federal employees. The abuses will only get worse and worse.

Mentioned up-thread was that it will start on the roadways. It already has. Ask any trucker.

They have designs to do the same at all sporting events, shopping malls, etc. We've already let them get out of hand. It needs to come to an end.

While its important to maintain a professional and courteous demeanor, I really dont see why an urn would be exempt from screening. Its like allowing mothers to bring a large amount of liquid baby formula on a plane exempting them from the liquid ban. Rules like these dont work if they have exceptions.

If I was going to try to take out a plane, I guess ill be putting liquid binary explosive in baby formula bottles and/or hiding my shiat in an urn.

The sound of one hand clapping: zarberg: My brother used to work for the TSA in Denver, he said his co-workers routinely would take money out of wallets and purses going through the X-ray machine, and said one even walked off with someone's laptop once.

/CSB

I have wondered if they do this. Even though your personal belongings only take a minute at most to pass through the X-ray machine, I still worry about some sly bastard quickly grabbing something.

My current method to try and limit their chances of getting my cash is to put most of my cash in a paper envelope deep in my rucksack beneath some other stuff. Then, since my wallet still has some in it I will usually try and bury my wallet in my rucksack before I get to the X-ray machine. I also try and 'follow' my stuff. So I kinda walk alongside the conveyor belt with it and try and wait until it goes into the machine before I go through the metal detector.

I figure I can't do much more than that. I did once try and have the cash in a plastic ziplock inside my sock. The only thing with that was I wondered if they might notice it and class it as suspicious so I thought probably better not to risk trying that approach. It worked the one time I did it but I don't know if I'd try it again.

Here's a thought: put it in a Ziploc and secure it with a ziptie. I dunno.

Personally I doubt this story very much. In a normal x-ray, the bag is never out of your sight. Oliver Twist himself would have a hard time digging through your bag with you standing not 10 feet from it.
