Noodling catfish. Is that what you young-uns are calling it these days?

Noodling is the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

2012-06-26 10:41:33 AM
Is taking them by hand that way specifically illegal or was this considered a theft from someone. If it is illegal to fish that way, why? I think its kind of impressive not to have to use a line and such...

Noodling catfish is too mainstream now. You haven't lived till you've tweedled the flying squirrel with someone.

Why is this illegal? Is catfish endangered now?

Is there a way to noodle snakehead carp?

It's too bad there are no snakehead carp in the Kentucky River. That might be fun to hunt with hand grenades and AK-47s. Instead of those minnows we have now.

Using primates as bait is illegal.

from a different article

Noodling or handfishing for game fish is legal in some states, but unlawful in Iowa. Iowa Conservation Officer Bob Stuchel said "This is a serious problem in our rivers and streams during the months of June and July when we have low water levels making these large fish vulnerable. Many fish are taken by hand from natural spawning structure on the stream and river beds, but in this case the individuals observed were removing the large flathead catfish from old bathtubs specifically modified and placed on the river bed below the water surface to attract and hold the fish."

Kentucky is home to more one armed catfish noodlers than any other place. Also the only place that using hand grenades while noodling seems like a good idea. Coincidence? Maybe

It is bow season for catfish until July 7 and then black powder until the end of August.

According to the article, this particular incident was illegal because it disrupted the egg laying activities of the fish.

Snakeheads are not carp

Snakehead are perciform...and invading waterways more in MD/ eastcoast/ potomac drainage.

Asian Carp (or likely you are more specifically referring to the fish with the common name "silver carp", that is invading waterways and jumps out of the water when startled by boats) are cyprinids and are taking to the mississippi mainstem and drainages.

You could noodle neither one.

174 lbs of catfish is ALOT. What are they doing, selling it?

Cuz' when a 8 fingered redneck comes to my door selling catfish outta the back of his truck, I'm gonna pass.....

When I was a kid in Kansas, there were some ponds near our house that had catfish in them. During winter, the ponds would freeze over and the water was only 1-3ft deep. So, you would wait for them to go under you and just throw a big rock on the shadow. Their tails would normally pop up and you would hang on and pull them up. Had to wear gloves for not only the cold, but they have sharp defensive mechanisms all over.

It's illegal in lots of states because; it's very dangerous (a 20 lb catfish can drown you) and it's too easy (you take a lot of the older breeder fish out).

If he had 174 pounds in his freezer then he is selling illegally harvested game which is also highly illegal.

People like this screw up fishing for the rest of us.

If I bring the AK-47 will you bring the hand grenades?

You can also use slingshots and machetes. One of each and six of Natty Light will run ya $20 at Wal-Mart.

Not me. I see no danger of catfish, snakeheads and Asian carp going extinct, and I love that subtle taste of varnish remover and pig shiate.

The explanation about the legal status that it's "too easy" is a load of crap. I know people who have scars all up and down their arms from doing this. Catfish have teeth and the larger the fish the larger the teeth. Most don't use bathtubs but reach under large rocks. About the time you find a snapping turtle in there you're going to wish you stuck to a rod and reel

My friends took me noodling a few weeks ago and it turned out to be rather fun. The guy would cut a circle in the side of old stripped down hot water tanks and then sink them a few feet under water. We would swim down and stick our hands in the hole and the catfish would bite our hands and we would pull them out of the water. Biggest one we caught was about 30 pounds.
Thick gloves and heavy long sleeve shirts where worn to protect our hands and arms. Plenty of beer was drank before hand also...
