I somehow doubt the second part of that headline.

What I wouldn't give for a good currywurst right now...

::sigh::

And it's all available RIGHT NOW with the "Sign, Then Belch!" promotion, only at your local Volkswagen dealer!

It is made at the butchery in VW's Wolfsburg plant,

Is there really a huge demand to cut up meat at a car factory?

"Have you seen Rolf, he was going to start a workers collective."
"No but the currywurst is really good today."

But the seats on my wife's Jetta are synthetic leather.

Major German heavy manufacturing conglomorates are like sausage: you don't want to see how they're made.

Ketchup on a hot dog?

When I was in Germany, I had countless currywurst and beer dinners. It was quite yummy.

In my teenage years in Germany I had a thoroughly balanced diet. Currywurst, pizza and donner's. It's a "balanced" diet because if I didn't eat those things I'da filled my gut with beer and fell over.

under a mountain: Ketchup on a hot dog?

It's not ketchup as you know it. It's more like a cross between BBQ sauce and mild chili sauce.

It's not a hot dog, it's currywurst. And you certainly don't add mustard to it, so yes. Also, the only real relationship to ketchup is being tomato based, so it's not the same for that reason as well.

I must now find this curry ketchup... can I make some using Heinz as a base?

I also have a "I bet they don't do that" for next time I'm at this one overly 19th century germanic restaurant near dallas. But I bet the sausage shop next to SMU might do currywurst.

I've been to Autostadt. I have friends who live there. I missed the currywurst.

Spargel. Spargel's good.

Never liked Currywurst - there are far too many splendid German dishes (cue the girl at Oktoberfest) to bother with fast food.

Schäufele is my favourite. My cardiologist might disapprove.

Spargel is the EVIL! Got driven off the road on my ZX7R when I was 17 by a tractor. Ok, I coulda done better to get away from him without running in to the spargel field but what are you gonna do? You know what happens to the front forks of a bike when you drive into a spargel field?

You sure can use Heinz, I have a bunch of currywurst in the fridge right now, smothered in a Heinz-based sauce. I got the recipe from Steve Raichlen, the sausage from Fernengel's in Cleveland's West Side Market.

Maybe I can get close to the recipe without violating copyright.

1 cup Heinz, add 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and a couple cloves of minced garlic. Heat in a small saucepan but don't burn it. Stir in a finely minced small white or yellow onion and a couple tablespoons of curry powder. Salt and pepper to taste. Try other herbs as well, like oregano and sage.

Officially, the sausage is called weisswurst. Which is more or less bratwurst that's been boiled.

Grill with indirect heat to achieve a nice crispy skin. Internal temp should be 180°F. Slice on a bias into bite sized chunks and serve.

//I boil mine with beer & sliced onions, 2:1 beer:water. Buy uncooked brats, boil a few minutes till white. QED

Currywurst is awesome. It was the one dish that I started making myself after being stationed in Germany (well I also make Gluhwein now, but that's a drink).

Within 5 seconds of picking it up, the buns breaks in half and the mustard catches fire, right?

Currywurst from Wolfsburg?????

Everybody knows Berlin is the true Heimat of the Currywurst.

I never heard of currywurst until I saw the NO RESERVATIONS episode in
Berlin.

Now I must seek it out to see if it is, in fact, all that.

Don't expect mouthgasms. It's decidedly tasty street food, but it's still street food. Don't hype it up too much in your head.

Loved hitting up the Imbiss stand in Berlin for a late night currywurst and pommes frites.
And you'd better say "Ja, bitte" when he asks if you want it "Scharf". (Spicy).

You would never use Weisswurst for Currywurst. Proper Weisswurst is steeped, and never boiled (and certainly not griilled) and the skin is inedible. Normal wurst for currywurst is either Bratwurst or Rindwurst.

Best Currywusrt stand in the world is Snackpoint in Frankfurt also known as Best Worscht in Town. They have spice levels that will make you shiat out your internal organs.
