Yeah, browse r/boardgames on reddit for a couple of days, and you'll see about a dozen different crazy Catan boards.

I love playing over XBL, but have been having a hard time lately finding enough people to play with. And then once the game starts, it's only a matter of time before someone rage quits.

Not as expensive as I thought it would be. The guy seems to have a sufficiently high-tech operation going to make it reasonable. I will consider making him shut up and take my money.

I saw the headline out of the corner of my eye and first read it as "Love Settlers" of Catan and thought, "well, that's an interesting twist on the theme".

But this is cool, too.

Just get the 10th anniversary treasure chest (I think there are a few out there still.) Heck, even the 15th anniversay set is made of decent materials.

I want this for Railways of the World.

2012-06-26 10:06:53 AM
That's pretty awesome, but I rarely play Settlers any more (and even then it's usually 5-6 player w/ Seafarers).

I have no idea what Settlers of Catan is, but that's some nice woodworking.

I just came across this in a game aisle while doing a little shopping. Is it really that good? How many people do you need for a good game?

MoronLessOff: I just came across this in a game aisle while doing a little shopping. Is it really that good? How many people do you need for a good game?

It's 3 or 4 players for the basic game. The gist of it is that each turn resources are randomly generated, and those resources can be traded or used to buy stuff.

One of it's big appeals is that you can generate the board randomly, so each game is different.

I think I saw one of these boards in person in the gameroom at Balticon.

It was even more beautiful in person.

Nice wood. I'll give you two sheep for it.

2012-06-26 11:00:57 AM
I like it, but part of the fun of Settlers is being able to switch the board around and change up the numbers.

We usually play "blind lay"

We'll put out the resource tiles, then we'll lay our houses and roads. Then we'll lay down the numbers that have been shuffled. Sometimes you get farked, sometimes you're sitting on awesome numbers.

2012-06-26 11:14:56 AM
I agree, I like random distribution of tiles AND numbers. The imbalances can create very interesting game play.

Which is why they have individual tiles on this wood one too... did you miss that part? Take a look at a couple of the detail pictures, you can see that all the tiles and numbers are removable.

Another plus: the resource generation and trading aspect means you aren't just sitting there till your next turn.

That's assuming Dave, the stupid jerk, doesn't keep refusing to trade his damn grain. I offered him two sheep and a brick for goodness sake.

Yeah, that would make it a lot better. Catan, you have to move the pieces around.

Sweet Farking Jesus. If I only had a) the skill to build something like that and b) a room twice as big as my game room currently is. That's terrific.

Several members of my family are crazy abut Catan - I've played at least a half dozen times and find it incredibly boring. There is just too much of the game which relies on plain dumb luck rather then skill/strategy.

2012-06-26 01:15:33 PM
I like that he sells the unfinished products "kits" too:
http://boardcrafting.mycafecommerce.com/products

Just a frame would be nice (I have one of the old style that doesn't have the puzzle type connectors for the ports), but at only $40 more the complete unfinished set is the better deal.

If there was a 5-6 player board/tile combo I would have to seriously consider it. I almost always play with more than 4 people, so while these are great looking, I can't justify it for just looks when I know it wouldn't get used much.

Elzar: There is just too much of the game which relies on plain dumb luck rather then skill/strategy.

My problem with it is that the game tends to be won or lost in the initial territory-claiming phase. Worse, everybody can pretty much tell five minutes into the game who's heavily favored to win, who has an outside chance if everybody else hates the favorite, and who's about to waste the next hour of their lives.

If I use all the expansions to that game, I basically need 2 full-size poker tables for that game. My game room is more than big enough, but the real estate needed for Arkham Horror is crazy.

/awesome game, though, once you get the hang of the rules.
//so many things to keep track of

Look into Rails of the World, there is very little chance involved and you can get super deep into strategy and theorycrafting if that's what you enjoy.

I am confused. How do you move the investigators and the monsters around without the labeled streets and arrows? And there are locations missing. And. And. WHAT IS THIS shiat? That is no Arkham Horror board.

/rocking out with an original (Fantasy Flight, not the "original" original) board in the dark and dingy "night time" coloring.

This is why I like Carcassonne. Get a few people who know what they're doing and the advantage can swing so quickly and rapidly that more often than not you won't know who's won until all the tiles are down and the points tallied up. The expansions just add more gleeful strategic craziness.
