AverageAmericanGuy: Women can have it all when they stop biatching about how hard it is to juggle work and taking care of a baby.

The entire gender gap would go away if women would stop whining about how hard they have it.

Most people forget that throughout most of human history, nearly everybody out there who wasn't royalty spent most of their lives on the verge of starvation. The loss of a parent could literally mean life or death for the children--it's no wonder that orphans and widows are stock victims of melodramas. People can biatch and moan about how oppressive the "paternalistic patriarchy" is, but it's what kept people alive for millennia.

Fathers aren't nearly as attached to their children as the mothers are--and they have nine months to wander off and settle into the loins of another woman before the kid arrives. The whole patriarchal system was designed to compel a guy to stick around and raise his children instead of wandering off. Not many guys are willing to work their butts off to raise another man's child, so for the patriarchal system to work, a guy has to have reasonable assurance that his children are, in fact, his.

We're now in the 21st century where the patriarchal system is no longer needed. A woman can pretty much raise a family on her own with a bit of assistance from the state. Guys are pretty much obsolete except as sperm donors. Guys who do still believe in the patriarchal system are getting royally screwed in Family Court and the welfare state is more than happy to substitute for a father.

I think this will ultimately benefit men. Women seem more than happy to take on the burden of raising a family AND working a full-time job. Except for the chumps who are being bled dry for child-support payments, it will be a perpetual adolescence for most guys. It's just a matter of getting a vasectomy, dropping completely out of the gene pool, spending your life smoking pot and playing X-Box, and letting women do the heavy lifting--because they want it all, baby...

PsiChick: You guys do realize that sexism cuts both ways, right? The reason men 'can' have it all is because no one expects men to parent.

Actually, the reason men 'can' have it all is because men can handle it all. I have a full-time job and handle 85% of the household duties (including raising of the children) due to the fact that my wife went back to work. It's stressful sometimes to be sure, but it's not all that hard (my wife was certain that I wouldn't last a week). All it takes is man-brain organization and logic.

raanne: JesusJuice: Even if your employer isn't paying your salary, they're still bearing the costs of keeping the position open in your absence. Why should they have to? You're essentially denying employment to another qualified applicant just so you can have a kid. Seems pretty selfish.

And yet it works in every other country. What is it about US companies that makes them so unable to thrive under what normal conditions for every other country? If a company can't come up with a plan to cover a couple months of a worker's absence, then the company is doing something wrong.

You might want to check on the current status of businesses in Europe before you say, "it works in every other country".

Ringshadow: umad: OgreMagi: Ringshadow: I should also point out that we're one of the worst countries, if not THE worst first world country, for new parent benefits. Some countries give as much as a YEAR paid leave for new mothers, and give paid leave to new fathers as well!

And guess who gets to make up for giving that year of paid leave? The single guy who doesn't get a raise or bonus for doing all that extra work someone didn't do it who gets to stay home and collect a check. Fark anyone who thinks they deserve a check for an entire farking year because they could pop a baby out of their vagina.

A few weeks, no problem. I'd even accept a full month of paid leave. Any more than a month is nothing more than a handout that you don't deserve. You want to have a baby? Good for you. Plan for it. Save for it. Don't expect to get paid for it.

THIS THIS THIS

Fark your kids. If you want them, you farking pay for them.

/yes, that means your perfect little angel too

As a chick who's never having kids: You guys are assholes. What, can't deal with making more money because a parent needs some time off at the start? Welcome to participating in society. Guess what, they get TAX BREAKS too! How dare they!

I mean, I wish my excuses were taken as equally as the whole "Junior's graduating from fifth grade" malarky, but they aren't. Life goes on. Guess I'll just enjoy myself on my own time.

You work too much for too little. No matter how hard you try, you just keep sinking deeper. Life takes every opportunity to kick you in the balls over and over again. When you're not being bored out of your mind, you're stressed out and exhausted. But look on the bright side, at least you get to die some day.

Dull Cow Eyes: Apparently for men, "having it all" includes dying 5 years earlier.

If the situation were reversed, you can bet that every other show on TV would be "Why Are We Killing America's Women?" "Gendercide," or "Women's Health In Crisis." The difference in life expectancy would be used as an example in every story on sexism.

You can tell America is fundamentally racist sexist because whites women have higher life expectancy, higher high school and college graduation rates, higher employment rates, lower incarceration rates, and lower violent crime victimization rates than blacks men.

Well then, being Super Woman isn't all it's cracked up to be.

The men didn't whine when they were working 80-90 hours a week to pay for the pre-feminist cults version of raise the kids, take care of the house, cook dinner every night, I'm so unfulfilled version of life, that women thought it was.

Now that ya'all farked that up, you're single, have rent, a car payment, clothes to buy, food to cook, kids to raise (on your own), bills to pay, laundry to do, a job to do, and all by yourself. JUST like everyone farking else. Oh yeah, good luck with taking that vacation.

Happy now?
