Rory's not a plank...

2012-06-25 07:31:55 PM
Smith is a plank. His dynamic range is "zzzzzz" and "AAAAAAAAAAAAA" with nothing in between. The only thing "the Doctor" has done since Smith took over that has been even vaguely worthwhile is remind us that bow ties are indeed cool. And thanks to some of the worst writing ever to spew forth from Moffat's keyboard in the history of ever, it's not just been bad, it's been disappointing. The hacked-together-Melody Pond shiate came from the same writer that did Girl in the Fireplace and The Empty Child? How is that even possible?

If it weren't for Rory as "Coolest Character Ever" the show would not be worth watching.

/I do have to admit that Vincent and the Doctor rocked though

Anyone else think it looks like Amy is doing a voudville style dance number with the Dalek in that photo?

Also, they mention the episode will feature every type of Dalek the Doctor has encountered? I wonder if this includes the old school Dalek's who couldn't move unless they were on a special electrified sidewalk, or those that wore backpacks (for power).

Just as long as we get the primary color Daleks. I liked what they did in Victory of the Daleks design-wise.

Jesus.

The problem with Smith, as I see it, is that he allows anyone and everyone else in the scene with him to take the spotlight. Which is refreshing after the scenery chewing of latter day Tenant, sometimes, but it does make his Doctor seem...small. It doesn't matter if the Doctor is supposed to be the center of the scene, Smith's Doctor might as well not even be there. It's not Doctor Who, it's the Amy Show or the Rory Show or the River Song Variety hour. He's great when he's on the screen by himself though.

Uh, I'm relatively new to Doctor Who, but I've seen all of NuWho, and well I hope that when Amy and Rory sign off, we still have Dr. Corday, because she rocks.

Also, Smith needs some more props. Maybe a watermelon and mallet.

Given on the giant hints that Moffat has dropped in the episodes he's written, River will be with us for a while. As the actress pointed out, she rattles off a list of adventures in Silence in the Library, and she assumed that they were just random names. We've already seen the Wreck of the Byzantium, which suggests Moffat already has stories to go with all the titles on that list.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind an episode with them this season and I think that they should be the main enemy for the 50th Anniversary (Daleks or the Master).

I hope they do something to give them back their sense of menace, cause they are some pretty cool foes, IMO...

So, the Doctor is dead as far as the universe is concerned so his first gig is going be to run right into the Daleks...

Who probably won't be interested in keeping this a secret.

And who have escaped the Time Lock so many times as to make it probably the most completely meaningless plot device ever contrived.

Ah, but who cares? It's better than the shiat we get in America - so I'm waiting for it.

Her "First Night"-"Last Night" were the highlight of the Night and the Doctor mini episodes, and includes the last time River sees the Doctor before the library.

But yes, there's a lot more to see. Jim the Fish, the party on the moon where he plays a tuba, Stevie Wonder. What did her earlier incarnation do for the over 20 years between her regeneration in New York and becoming her parents' BFF? [Or, alternatively, how did she jump ahead in time 20+ years?]

If you didn't watch them yet, make sure to watch the short episodes on the dvds. First Night/Last Night is a good one.

A recommendation for Doctor Who/Sherlock fans: both (a very young) David Tenant and Andrew Scott show up in Foyle's War, which is also a pretty excellent British mystery series. It's set during WWII (and in its aftermath) and each episode unwinds at its own pace.

No, it' not as good as Sherlock, but watch the episode with Andrew Scott and you'll understand how he got cast to play Moriarty.

I did that a few nights ago. You can watch them online if you google. Also the "minisodes" written by elementary/middle school kids.

Since it's a Doctor Who thread, let me ask:

Why did Rory and Amy see themselves on the hill in The Hungry Earth,

and

Has it ever been established why River Song travels in the opposite direction of the Doctor? Near as I can tell, that's just happenstance, but maybe I missed something.

Judging by her reaction to tennant doesn't she also need to meet more than one regeneration for that to make sense?

It's not that they're travelling in opposite directions in time (like Merlin in some versions of the Arthur legend) it's that their timelines are running in opposite directions in relationship to each other. No idea why yet, but I'm sure there will be an explanation.

RoyBatty: Why did Rory and Amy see themselves on the hill in The Hungry Earth,

Obviously, because it will be a plot point in some future episodes.

That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is that it will be a season opening two parter and the Daleks will end up being a huge season arch plot driver and show up for the last two episodes too.

The only way many of the things that Moffat has set up won't be resolved is if something happens to Moffat. He knows exactly what he's doing, and he's planted things all along. Hell, Silence in the Library was written well before he took over as showrunning (though he must have known he already had the job at the time).

What did scare me was a FARK article from a few days ago that he doesn't write the plots down.

I was pretty convinced the enormous difference between Doctor Who and LOST and all the other crap was that at least at Doctor Who they outlined the entire season at a time.
