It's ironic, because he's not singing to a pie.

Maybe some of the idjuts laughing at this guy should google him or look him up on YouTube - this guy performs live and also has hundreds of fans.

Probably been laid more times than subby, I suspect.

I enjoyed it immensely. I'm not exactly sure why the fact that he's overweight is even being discussed. If I like a statue, does that mean the sculpture has to be a crazy-hot chick?

Di Atribe: Shostie: Winning: I don't get it.

I guess a fat guy singing a Goo-Goo Dolls song is ironic or something.

I guess subby was surprised that a fat guy could be talented. Same reaction when that Susan Boyle lady ended up having a great voice. People were surprised because she was less than attractive. I mean ugly people are supposed to be good at computers and science, not artsy fartsy stuff, amirite?

A song by the The Buggles said it best "Video killed the radio star" Now en days you have to be hot and maybe semi talented to make it, Well in main stream media anyways.

This guy has a good voice and I enjoyed the video, Not sure where subby was going with this....

Subby has played you all. The irony is that we are discussing this because he is a fat dude and all of use to a number would ourselves be unacceptable to the world at large if we put ourselves out there like him. It's like when farkers criticize some model, as usual, that is not quite perfect while not posting a pic of yourself for other farkers to compare.

J. Frank Parnell: The autotune is pretty obvious. Which is a shame.

Really? Because I'm a trained singer, and worked for a record label, and I don't hear it all. All I hear is obviously good singing. There's echo on there, that could definitely be trimmed a bit without losing anything, but no AutoTune that I've yet detected. (Any experts out there?) Some people are just good singers.

I watched an amazing documentary a few years back, 'Before the Music Dies,' about the slow, excruciating decline of major record labels and how they could drag everyone down with them in their desperate scrabbling to hold on. Part of it showed an extreme example of how big labels operate these days. They found a street busker and bought a song from him, for cheap. They hired someone else to create a (mostly digital) composition around it. They hired someone to sing it. Not a singer, just an attractive girl. Who couldn't sing. Using professional AutoTune, they hammered her awful singing to fit the composition. Then they did a video of her 'singing' the new song -- while eating pizza and drinking soda. It was funny, of course, but it drove home the point: a huge amount of commercial music is heavily processed crap, and we might not even know it much of the time.

After some consideration, I suspect that subby means that if you just saw a screengrab of this, you probably wouldn't expect to hear what you do when you play it. I don't think it was really meant to be funny, just thoughtful.

That could have been worded a bit better, but I get what you're saying, and mostly agree. (I'm not sure that subby is trying to do what you suggest.)

/'nother CSS: Years ago, I was backstage at a local poetry slam. For those of you who don't know, or need to be filled in, slam is a special kind of competitive performance poetry, which has special rules such as how it must be done live and in person before an audience. Also backstage was the state's poet laureate. (One of the cooler such folks in the country, as most laureates are academic poets who sneer at slam and much other 'folk' poetry.) One girl -- she was pretty young, probably not even 18 -- did a piece that I didn't think was very good, and being the full-of-myself twit I was at that time, I commented on it to the poet laureate, who was standing right next to me. He thought a moment then said, "It was still better than yours."

It's ironic because all he can taste is this moment, yet he is very interested in food.

Sylvia_Bandersnatch: Yeah, he's doughy and nerdy and he's got some of the Numa Numa thing going on, sure. Let's all laugh at him. Because we're all so fit and trim and athletic and young and good-looking behind our seven proxies, right?

I'll give him this: He's sincere. And that's more than I can say for a huge number of people doing anything, and a huge amount of so-called 'art' of any kind that's out there right now. Everyone's got their own criteria for evaluating what other people do, and for me sincerity is tops: If I believe that the artist believes in what they're doing, then I believe it, too. Even if they're funny looking and not good at it. That's why I feel that Tom Waits is a better singer than Celine Dion, and Wesley Willis was a better musician than Creed. If I think you're bullshiatting me through your art, I hate it no matter how 'artful' it is or how skilled your technique. But convince me you mean it, and I'm hooked even if I think your technique is terrible. An old guy singing to himself in a doorway has more soul than everybody at the Grammys put together, and if I had to pick any one of them to give a dollar to, it would be him.

I'll add Lyle Lovett to the mix

If we're talking about good covers from surprising individuals, this one takes the cake.

Oh, i know good singers, and do a little myself. Although not professionally.

He sounds robotic and unnatural. The way the pitches shift just screams autotune to me. I'd like to hear some of his live stuff people have mentioned to see if he may in fact be a robot.

Subby thought it was meant to be funny because fat, but thinks his amazing perceptive skills allowed him to see the hidden beauty. Just a guess.

See also - Israel Kamakawiwoʻoletouch. This is the best cover in the history of everything.

This was not a cover. it was a mutilation and personally offensive to me and many others. That fat asshole ruined two great tunes at once, and to boot, he couldn't sing any better than your average 500lb barfly, thus disrespecting not one, not two, but three cultures at once with his abortion of a song.

Yes, I'm serious. I hate this music with a passion.

It's funny because he's fat. Apparently.

And each and every one of you who hear autotune know exactly *shiat*. Reverb aint autotune.
