I hate Steampunk.

I was wearing Steampunk before Steampunk was cool. Now where are my goggles!

Steampunk is just the Goths wearing goggles and corsets.

You'd think with global warming being what it is, the fashion people would come up with some options that didn't include 4 layers of long, heavy clothes.

Put me on the side of "thinks this is cool" ..
yeah, I'll stand over there and take my beating.

It looks good in movies.

IRL, however:

It's really not fair to base something's potential for everyday wear off of how it looks on Gary Oldman. He can rock any style you give him.

Few entire genres fail as hard as steam punk does. Its continued success against all logic only proves, like Twilight, that people have no sense of quality writing.

So Prada hired the costume designer from Wild Wild West?

That just looks like old western wear although the mechanical spider was steampunk. Will Smith definitely made the right decision to do that instead of The Matrix. He wouldn't have been able to rap in The Matrix.

Steampunk is what happens when goths discover the color brown.

Goth girls already wear corsets.

Yes, for God's sake, can we stop calling everything with a Victorian influence farking "steampunk."

2012-06-25 03:27:41 PM
My gut reaction said lame. But then I saw William Defoe and Gary Oldman and my brain said badass.

2012-06-25 03:28:44 PM
Maybe Prada is trying to make a clean split from the rap scene.

It was sort of cool, once.

But the horse has been run into the ground, beaten to death, brought back to life by an unholy ritual, staked through the heart, and set on fire.

I think it finally, irrevocably jumped the shark when stock fantasy dwarves/gnomes became steampunk.

With their legs deep in the boots, boots all up on the heel. Yes the kind that make a certain type of fetishist squeal.

I, for one, would appreciate seeing more corsets in day to day fashion.

2012-06-25 03:38:07 PM
I read that as "Pravda Goes Steampunk" and was immediately surprised and disappointed.

2012-06-25 03:40:28 PM
So..."Victorian" fashion is now called "Steampunk"?

/there's nothing steampunk about those outfits. MAYBE the glasses, but that's debatable.

I dunno, the guys on the far ends don't look too bad. The ones in the middle look ridiculous, though.

2012-06-25 03:41:05 PM
I thought a steampunk was someone who enjoyed getting a bellows shoved up their backside.

2012-06-25 03:42:17 PM
Actually, I take that back. Only Willem Dafoe and the guys wearing that white thing look ridiculous.

3. Planned to take over the world

One young lady who was in a steampunk band made sure that no more than one of the bad was wearing goggles at any one time to avoid looking like a steampunk "hazmat team" as she put it.

2012-06-25 03:46:37 PM
There's also some really bad 'shoppery going on in those pictures. There's no way that the pins and other chest accoutrement in those photos was there when they were taken.

Yea, Steampunk Downton Abbey where Pip, Lacey and Edwardian Faust are calling for their fashion storms to be given back. There is a reason this stuff died a glorious death.

I dunno, save for the morning dress and wing collars and such, some of the mens' suits in that show looks pretty smart, in a sartorially-conservative way. Would be perfect for meeting with clients, if I didn't have to spend €TEXAS to have one made bespoke.

2012-06-25 04:09:43 PM
if "SteamPunks" dressed more like the stuff in the Prada ad it would be a much less annoying fad...

instead it's goggles and gears and spray painted nerf guns combined with unwashed recycled renfaire garb....cuz fanboys aren't content with farking up just one historical period, I guess.

/seriously though... I'm digging the shiat out of the waist coats... would never pay Prada prices... but I do have a seamstress that can knock off anything from photos...

Steampunk clothing = Over the top, extreme, douchebag.

Steampunk gadgets for your office desk = kinda cool as long as you maintain a nice balance with the real world.

I have an old bakelite phone at home. It was actually a fairly advanced model back in the day, with push buttons and crazy features like "hold" and "redial" but it's still got wood paneling. One of the first button phones, and I love that thing.

The funny thing is, this is Prada, and these outfits look worse than "well done" geek-culture Steampunk costumes generally do...

That is just farking sad.

I admit to generally liking some of the Steampunk stuff, particularly the "steampunk guitar" and "steampunk iPod" and the like. Including the better done costumes. And Stardust.

As a steampunk, I have to say . . . not only are these not specifically Steampunk . . .

I don't even think they are Victorian/Neo-Victorian, but rather Regency. Pre-Steam

//doesn't wear brown, doesn't use gears, doesn't wear goggles.
