You're right, it's not a crime. But what you do WHILE skateboarding (scratching up curbs, rails, etc) IS vandalism.

FTFA: She was rushed to hospital following the crash, as was the 15-year-old, who reportedly suffered a number of minor fractures.

Sounds like he was going at least plaid.

This one is going to draw some angry responses.

We had a nice new granite plaza damaged by the skate boarders (black marks all along the edge and some chunks taken out). The local kids started screaming when the cops started watching the place and handing out citations.

/even worse are the roller bladers who take out the middle wheels and do tricks, so it's the metal rail against the stone/wood

In the interest of opinion here are various awesome flatland tricks at 1000fps slo-mo. It is fantastic to watch in this detail.

Considering it was on a "path designated for cyclists and pedestrians," I'm having a hard time putting too much blame on the kid. There could always be more to the story, but it just sounds like an unfortunate accident so far.

Big problem in my neighborhood too. Funny thing though, it happened right after the public skate park closed due to budget cuts. Don't complain about the problem if you don't like the solution

wheeled traffic should not be mixed with pedestrian traffic

motorized traffic should not be mixed with non-motorized traffic. A possible exception, if it is strictly limited to average walking speed, and has sensors to stop before hitting people or things.

A crime is whatever they say it is. The bumper sticker should read "Skateboarding shouldn't be a crime!" That pet peeve aside, I used to have a poster demonstrating the "crutch sweeper", a layback slide taking the feet out from under a little old lady. That was only a joke in poor taste, though. In real life, if you wanna go blasting down the sidewalk at 25 mph., you need either an empty street, or enough board technique and body control not to run anyone over while doing it, or the cops should be allowed to Rodney King you.

Seriously.

Here in DC, they closed one of the major Go-Go outlets that used to have rap contests.

So, some fool in Gaithersburg MD decided to have a Rap-Karaoke night at a Red Rock Canyon restaurant a few nights ago - 100 simultanious Nubian moments ending in multiple stabbings and a shooting.

If you shut down the zoo, the animals will crap where they will.

It's not like the type of people that partake in these activities will curtail them - they just do what the hell they want.

It's our job as a society to provide areas where persons of their ilk can do what they want without threat to the general public.

Usually plastic, not metal. Still destructive though. I ruined many a curb/planter/bench when I was younger.

I like that trick that all the skaters do where they do this little jump, the skateboard flips and lands upside down, and the skater goes stumbling forward. They all seem to know that one.

A similar thing happened in Capitola about a year ago. Box van was stopped for a LOL crossing the street in the crosswalk. A 17-year old kid bombing the hill in the bike lane clobbered her. Moar here

Also:

I put a wheel in her right hand
I put a wheel in her left hand
I put a wheel between her legs

I used my grandma as a skateboard
And we went up and down
And we went 'round and 'round
We did the alley-hop, we did the acid-drop
Went down a hill and we took a spill
And now grandma is dead!

There was a time here when a lot of the local towns wanted to open skate parks, and a few did, but the liability insurance made it too cost prohibitive, and I don't mean like a little expensive, I mean like really really expensive that no one could ever justify the cost. Even in the towns that used to have them, they've all since closed for mostly the same reason. That and vandalism.

Many years ago, skating on the Venice Beach boardwalk, my buddy grabbed my shoulder, pulling me off my board, sending it shooting down the boardwalk like a cruise missle. We stood there, wondering what the target would be. It hit a fat girl in the cankle, then careened into a sunglass stand. Grabbed the board, mumbled an apology and left the scene, girl and Korean guy cursing at me.
At least she had a story to tell about her visit to Venice.

That's what I'm thinking. Unless they expressly prohibited skateboarding then this just sounds like an unfortunate accident. It could easily have been a biker that ran into her.

Both would have been a "failure to control" violation.

In the Seattle area we have cyclist/pedestrian trails which a division down the middle. I'm wondering if this was a similar path and whether she was walking in the cyclist lane before the accident. As the article states she was talking with someone, so I'd assume they were walking side-by-side. Missing details.

I'm surprised that fixes like that aren't common. All it takes is a few bumps in a rail or some other obstacle and skaters will look someplace else.

On my computer, the headline doesn't say: "Skateboarding is not a crime...until you kill a lady while doing it and you should be surprised by that."

It just says: "Skateboarding is not a crime...until you kill a lady while doing it."

Maybe I don't have the right fonts installed or somethin'.

Some of the dudes are good enough now that they can do tricks over the skate stoppers. It's a greater challenge - makes the trick harder.

Lots of good black skaters. Lots of good latino/South American skaters. About 15 years ago the Brazilians were killing the street scene. I can't find vids but a cat named Rodil Jr was ground breaking!
