I worded it poorly

"The power of the media doesn't necessarily hold sway over what you see for yourself at the local level."

Better?

On the local level, one can see new buildings being built, new businesses starting, you may have friends out of work for a long time finally getting a job, see new families move into long vacant properties in your neighborhood.

On the national level, it's so full of bile and vitriol, it's no wonder they think that locally things are good, it's all those other places making things tough for themselves.

Plus, I am still amazed how people get all riled up and claim no one told them what the city or county was up to when in the year leading up to them "just finding out" has had multiple news reports, public hearings, polls, more public hearings, reports on those public hearings, letters to the editor for and against the proposals, and in some instances a public vote(instead of just the council). How one can still claim to be blindsided when you never took the interest in the first place.... ARG! It's infuriating!

Oh, I can come up with a couple things that got farked up here in town and I know exactly who is responsible.

I wanted that frickin' high-speed train, dammit.

meat0918: you may have friends out of work for a long time finally getting a job

The weird thing is that I don't know anyone who is out of a job. In fact, I don't know anyone who lost a job without cause in the past few years. I think it is just a matter of demographics and the fact that many of the local blue-collar had already been lost. The housing market has still sucked.

You weirdly sanguine about the kinda local economic conditions you're liable to see, Fark?

So if people living in (presumably) a wide variety of places in the country all see that their own local areas are doing well, does that mean that the national economic picture is actually as bad as various pundits say?

This is a case of known vs. the unknown.

It is very easy to assign blame for all of the problems to the "great unknown", or the areas/places you do not see or interact with on a day to day basis.

The people and places you know might make more sense to you, and when you constantly hear that everything is in the shiatter you have to assign that blame somewhere.

I know plenty of cases in medical malpractice where a patient wanted to sue the surgeon or specialist, ie: Someone they have only seen once or twice. However, when told that it was their primary care doc who would likely bear the blame, many of them have backed off because they knew that doc for years.

Nope. Known vs Unknown.
I know how I am doing, how my city is doing. Maybe how my state is doing.
But in the end, I have to watch the news to get details for everything which I dont have personal knowledge of.

and the news only reports BAD THINGS. it is biased.
In the 435 congressional districts, the news rarely reports on the 400+ without corruption charges pending. The news does report on the PROBLEMS ...
detroit is dying, these congressmen are corrupt ....

so we assume that we now have the facts .... when in reality we have a horribly skewed sample of reality ...

13yo was strip searched during processing for 30 day juvie ... standard procedure. she blonde, blue-eyed, cute, white - OUTRAGE. but this happens every day ....
100,000,000 kids were not strip searched this year because they didnt commit any juvie crimes. ..... this is NEVER reported ..... why is that?

:D

I think the article was trying to say that people are so shell shocked by negative talk about obama, that they're convinced he's doing something, somewhere by golly, and only by the grace of god has he not come to (your town here) to ruin the economy and force gay mexican marriage.

2012-06-25 02:04:15 PM
I think this really shows how effective a media and/or marketing campaign can be against anyone who is not paying attention. people hear what they want and just assume the rest without doing any research or asking any questions about what is happening in other parts of the country or the world.

2012-06-25 02:05:35 PM
People are always more optimistic about were they live versus the unknown. It may be bad where you live but you don't really know how it is in other places and its not like the stories you hear about them are positive, most stories are about how terrible things are and it always seems worse then it actually is.

I should have been more clear. I didn't mean to contradict Thomas. I think both concepts can co-exist.

I view it through the lens of cognitive dissonance because it makes little sense that the whole is turning to shiat while your tiny piece of the part is okie dokie.

Cognitive dissonance is a affect in line with hunger, it is immense displeasure that we are trying to correct by reconciling what our personal belief systems believe is true versus what is actually happening.

I think you were on the right track with your description, but I don't think it is the case in this instance.

I agree with the other comment that people believe it is bad nationally, because they are told it is bad nationally (so that is what they know) and believe it is not so bad locally, because they can actually see it or are told (so again, it's what they know). Very few are most likely arduently saying that the economy is bad because it fits their script, all though that would be interesting to know, wouldn't it?

Reminds me of Rachel Maddow interviewing people in Alaska who hated Eric Holder. "He's the most anti-second amendment attorney general ever!" What's he done? None of them could give a single example. 'Uh, his voting record.' Holder doesn't have an office with a vote.

[T]here are known knowns; there are things we know that we know.
There are known unknowns; that is to say there are things that, we now know we don't know.
But there are also unknown unknowns - there are things we do not know, we don't know.

Ah yeah, but every year some selected categories happen to increase compared to the year before, so you can highlight those in the media and bang the fear drum based on that.

I wouldn't really call straddling the 50% "good" or "excellent" line upbeat. More like lukewarm.
