It's a kid's show. That doesn't mean it's bad, or that you can't enjoy it, but it's still a kid's show. Deal.

Anyway, I'll post what I always post when there are terrifying quasi-realistic pictures of cartoon characters.

Counter_Intelligent: kaladar: Regardless of whether this is an 'adult' or 'kid' show, who the hell is honestly scared or creeped out by pictures like that. Or clowns?

hstein3: mattharvest: Honest Bender: foo monkey: BumpInTheNight: Haven't heard of it, is this another one of those shows for stoners?

It's a children's cartoon.

It is absolutely not a children's cartoon. There is some very mature dialog and such in there... Maybe it might go over a child's head, but I have a hard time believing this show was made for kids. Teenagers maybe...

Yeah seriously. Off the top of my head:

(SPOILERS ABOUND)

1. The entire world is post-apocalyptic. The creators have made explicit that they're never going to explain the apocalypse, but we've had glimpses (such as the Ice King's origin, see below) that reveal it to have been at least partially nuclear.

Not explicitly, but it does come out in both the setting and in casual references by the characters. The latter in the form of comments about the "Mushroom war" and such. The former takes a lot of different forms:

-In the episode where Finn works on his fear of the ocean, they take a submarine underwater, where you see an entire city ruined. This includes cars on roads with people still inside, indicating they died while driving.

-In the episode where they explore Marceline's memories, you see her as a little girl (possibly a thousand years ago), with most of the landscape ruined and aflame.

-In the episode where Finn takes down the Lich, the Lich's lair is in an ancient subway station. He summons skeleton minions who are wearing modern clothing.

-Finn is frequently called the only human. He eventually finds a "lost tribe" of humans in an underground fallout shelter, although only one of them has avoided mutating into something else. They had become feral in their long time underground.

Even if you don't care for the show's stories or sense of humor, I find it interesting just as a display of how much story-telling can be done through background details like that. There's a great deal of story that happens where most children wouldn't notice.

-Ruins and debris are common parts of the ...

There's also the episode when Jake has his croak dream, and when he's describing it to Finn he talks about the rocket ship. Finn says he's not worried because rockets haven't been reinvented yet

/or something like that

So, I've been paying a little more attention to the show after the insight from this thread and saw Marcelene's Closet the other day. Finn said this rhyme while counting down for hide and seek with Jake:
"Over the mountain, the ominous cloud

coming to cover the land in a shroud,

hide in a bushel, a basement, a cave,

but when cloud comes a'huntin',

No one's a'safe...."
