Ishkur: saintstryfe: I tender much more blame to Vince McMahon.

I've always wondered why McMahon wasn't in jail or at least suffering severe repercussions for all the negligence, ignorance, plausible deniability and sleazy tactics he used to exploit wrestlers' whole lives for decades.

Because he's a billionaire with a team of hardcore lawyers

saintstryfe: cman: It is a shame what he did.

Parents who kill their own kin are the most horrible people in the whole world. Benoit had a legacy that few Professional Wrestlers could claim. He threw it all away when he did this cowardly act.

Chris Benoit should never have his name rehabilitated. His legacy should stay as it is: as a piece of shiat.

He was sick. His brain was not working. He was unable to think clearly, like he was permanently drunk - but without the physical disabilities that state offers to clarify you're not right. He was very very badly off. He struck in anger when he wasn't angry, and when faced with his act, he was so despondent his only idea was to kill himself.

There's blame, and Chris deserves some of it. He should have stopped the first time something happened, but didn't. That's on him I tender much more blame to Vince McMahon. He let people skate by with only cursory checkups. He didn't call for regular neurological scans to see this sort of damage and work to prevent it. He didn't ban the kind of moves that got people hurt. He ignored so many warning signs, so many "wow that's strange" moments. He did it for his own personal profit. And it's not just Chris - It's Eddy (don't you think a guy with a past of drug use might want some extra cardio tests once every 6 months?), it's dozens of guys recently out of contract the moment they're not immediately useful to him who turn up dead. It's a long pattern of abusing people.

Others deserve blame too - but Chris himself and Vince - they're the big ones.

To me, Chris will always be the guy who's hugging Eddy at the end of WrestleMania 20. He'll the the guy who had hilarious skits with Edge and Christian. He'll be the Pegasus Kid, flying off the ropes into Masahiro Chono's boot. He'll be the one putting up weekly curtain-puller classics against Chris Jericho on Nitro. He'll be the guy who broke down at his friend Eddy's death.

His death, and his family's death, is a long series of missed and ignored s ...

Oh, fark you. Benoit strangled his son because he had physical problems. His son was never going to be a big hulking guy. He was always going to be a smaller, undersized person and Benoit couldn't handle his "legacy" being that way. That's why nancy had to die first. He knew she would fight him for the safety of their son.

He was a monsterous shiatbag on the level of Sandusky. Maybe even worse in some regards.

Owangotang: The day the facts came out is the day I completely turned my back on Benoit. All of the obfuscating, blaming Vince or roids or whatever, it's just bunk. He did it, and it he was so farked up he could have asked for help at any time. He didn't.

In the words of Sheiky Baby, "F*ck Chris Benoit".

It's a murky issue, but you need to have some sympathy for Beniot.

Insane people can't see they are doing something wrong. They think their fine. You've seen crazy people walk down the street pants down at their ankles, a trail of shiat down their legs do you think they are making a conscious choice?

Benoit probably was thinking "I'm doing the best thing possible for my wife & kid."

If you believe that the brain is the control center of our behavior, when you have a brain of an 80 year old Alzheimer's patient, you just might not have the mental facilities to say "I shouldn't kill my family."

Now that being said, there are plenty of other wrestlers who've gone through the same punishment as Benoit, taken the same substances and they seem to be OK. Why? I don't know.

I used to live in Calgary, and watched Benoit back when he was in Stampede wrestling, well before Vince got him. I don't blame Vince for what happened, for one second. There was always something a little off with him, that's for sure. He always wrestled really stiff, and probably took more serious bumps / headshots than others. Just my opinion, but I think Benoit emulated and tried to live up to his hero, Dynamite Kid (that's where the Diving Headbutt from the top rope came from, among other moves). As messed up as Dynamite Kid is these days, I'm surprised he's still living. He took unbelievable risks in that ring.

Easy to say now, but Benoit alone was responsible for his actions that day, and actions leading up to how he got there.

In about 10 years he'll be in videos again. People will know him as "the one who murdered his wife and son then killed himself", but still see the matches going "good wrestler but what a demon."

Wasn't it Bruiser Brody that stabbed someone in Mexico? Or some crap like that?

Inexcusable, horrible person. But wrestling/sports in general take a very "historical" look at their "talents" after a certain amount of time. In a decade, his stuff will be aired again, but not worshipped in any way. In fact they'll be using it to demonize him more. This horrible person laughing and skipping around the ring, etc. would later go on to commit two murders and kill himself.

But here he is winning the title at Wrestlemania.... that monster.

etc.

No, Bruiser Brody was stabbed to death in Puerto Rico. His killer got off.

Although they are slowly letting Benoit filter back into things. They didn't even attempt to edit him out of the big Horseman reunion segment, probably because there would have been a big black box right behind Ric Flair the whole time.

And, even though he was removed from the cover art for rereleases of the DVDs of various PPVs he headlined, they didn't remove his matches.

that's what it was. something like that. i don't study the archives of rasslin' just remember Foley in his book mentioning having to shake the hand of the person who stabbed someone and it mentioned Bruiser. totally blanked that Bruiser was the dead.

whoops. Monday.

To those blaming his illness, Benoit was nuts because he chose to do several things that were obviously unsafe. That was a decision he made. He then made further decisions to not get help long after he knew something was wrong. While he was possibly not capable of a rational decision at the time he killed his family, he got to that point of his own free will.

Also, can we link to someone who can actually write next time? Good God that's a shiatty blog post.

Chris obviously deserves blame and Vince probably does too... But what about Ted Turner and the guys who ran WCW where he spent a good portion of his career? Or even Paul Heyman and ECW. Why should all the corporate blame lay at only Vince's feet?

I just finished reading Jericho's book "Undisputed" and in it Chris mentions a few bizarre things about Benoit prior to the murder-suicide.

Great book and collection of stories, except towards the end he deals with Benoit and the death of his mother. Real bummer to end on.

I've told this story before, and it seems a good time to tell it again: I was at Elimination Chamber 2011. A kid behind me, couldn't have been more than 11 or 12, was calling Randy's match, with about 90% accuracy, before Randy did the move. Kid was seriously on the mark with his calls - "Scoop slam. Another scoop slam." and so on.

Orton, Cena, and Sheamus are the three that always look like they're just going through the motions, going from move A to move B and always rely on their signature spots (rope DDT, chest shots while the guy is tied up on the ropes, etc etc).

I think Swagger does a more interesting job with his offense.. And that's saying a lot. Not a lot of good, though.

I agree with what you wrote. Benoit was completely out of his mind at the time he did this and had a ridiculous amount of concussions in his career thanks to constantly landing on his head/neck. People tend to forget that even if the guys are on TV once a week, they're doing the same moves 5,6, sometimes 7 days a week - they don't phone it in at house shows.

It's a tragic business because these performers often do not have health insurance and they work through injuries because they are afraid of losing their spot in the roster. They can't take off and heal properly until it's so severe, there is permanent damage.

I'd like to say Benoit should have realized something was not right and sought help, but for all we know, he did not even realize that himself. I sincerely doubt he would have ignored that level of a problem if he was aware of it.

It is a shame that such a talented wrestler had such a tragic ending to his life.

He should have had a lot more happen to him after Owen Hart died due to them cutting corners on the harnesses because he didn't want him to have to get out of a harness like Sting did. That was sheer negligence on his part -- it's not as if the effect was ruined by Sting having to take the harness off. Nobody was under any illusions that any of these men were actually capable of flying.

Everything that happened was a direct result of people like you paying good money to watch professional wrestling. You think he would have been on the juice for the Sunday matinee show at the gym down the street? He killed himself for you, then he killed his family because of what he did for you, and you want to call him a piece of shiat?

The fault is just as much yours. You like seeing grotesque, muscle-bound steroid freaks fake-beating each other up, and they oblige you by doing everything you ask of them, damn the consequences. Well, here's a consequence. Hope you enjoy the show tonight. The blood is at your feet.

The Greg Gagne/Benoit comparison is ridiculous. Gagne was a diagnosed dementia patient that had to confined to an institution who got into a fight with another patient and ended up killing him due to not knowing own strength and that the other guy was so fargile.

Benoit was able to preform in front of millions on TV days before the killings. He decided to skip a PPV to go and kill his family. He was able to text Chavo to make sure his dogs got taken cared of.

Being mentally ill does not mean he would have gotten off if he didn't off himself. The insanity defense is really used and even more rarely successful. It requires established the defendant had no concept of right and wrong.

Verne Gagne, Greg was his toothpick of a son who got pushed like Garret Bischoff.

Just my opinion, but I figure that Benoit flipped out, and did something really bad to Nancy, be it roid rage, too much head trauma, some of both, or whatever.. and just got in a place where he figured he was in too deep to be able to take it back. So it turned into an even bigger atrocity.
