Parents who kill their own kin are the most horrible people in the whole world. Benoit had a legacy that few Professional Wrestlers could claim. He threw it all away when he did this cowardly act.

Chris Benoit should never have his name rehabilitated. His legacy should stay as it is: as a piece of shiat.

He was sick. His brain was not working. He was unable to think clearly, like he was permanently drunk - but without the physical disabilities that state offers to clarify you're not right. He was very very badly off. He struck in anger when he wasn't angry, and when faced with his act, he was so despondent his only idea was to kill himself.

There's blame, and Chris deserves some of it. He should have stopped the first time something happened, but didn't. That's on him I tender much more blame to Vince McMahon. He let people skate by with only cursory checkups. He didn't call for regular neurological scans to see this sort of damage and work to prevent it. He didn't ban the kind of moves that got people hurt. He ignored so many warning signs, so many "wow that's strange" moments. He did it for his own personal profit. And it's not just Chris - It's Eddy (don't you think a guy with a past of drug use might want some extra cardio tests once every 6 months?), it's dozens of guys recently out of contract the moment they're not immediately useful to him who turn up dead. It's a long pattern of abusing people.

Others deserve blame too - but Chris himself and Vince - they're the big ones.

To me, Chris will always be the guy who's hugging Eddy at the end of WrestleMania 20. He'll the the guy who had hilarious skits with Edge and Christian. He'll be the Pegasus Kid, flying off the ropes into Masahiro Chono's boot. He'll be the one putting up weekly curtain-puller classics against Chris Jericho on Nitro. He'll be the guy who broke down at his friend Eddy's death.

His death, and his family's death, is a long series of missed and ignored signs by people more interested in money then a man's health, that eventually cost 3 people their lives.

Just going to toss it out there: Benoit wrestled for 15 years in other companies. He spent 7 in WWF/WWE.

I'm not sure Vince is as much to blame for this one as you're giving him credit for.

I do for two reasons:

1) he was the last one. Chris worked for him for a solid 7 years. Plenty of time to notice problems, especially after his neck injury.

2) Vince is a multi-billionaire. His company is worth more then every other wrestling organization added together and tripled a few times over. Yet he pleads poverty when it comes to talent -they're all contractors who can be let go for any reason at any time with no reason,and he has no obligation to them. His "Wellness" programs have all been responses to these tragedies and they haven't been effective. As I said: Vince could have these guys in for yearly cardio tests, bi-annual CAT scans, stuff that would show these kind of injuries that took Chris and Eddie, but he doesn't, because for him, it's not cost effective.

Even piledrivers are now limited to only being delivered by either Undertaker, Kane and HHH, and even Kane as of late seems to finish opponents off with a chokeslam instead of a piledriver.

Uh, I don't know if you noticed, but other than the occasional Jerry Lawler piledriver, that move has been banned for over a decade due to Owen breaking Austin's neck with it.

The day the facts came out is the day I completely turned my back on Benoit. All of the obfuscating, blaming Vince or roids or whatever, it's just bunk. He did it, and it he was so farked up he could have asked for help at any time. He didn't.

In addition to the Benoit tragedy, today marks the anniversaries of Toni Adams' death (only 45), Biff Wellington's death (same date as Benoit), and Cowboy Bradley. This is also the 10th anniversary of Bret Hart's bicycle crash and stroke.

Honestly if it were the Jerry Lawler sitdown piledriver that were being used, the move would be safer. It's the Undertaker's Tombstone piledriver that's more dangerous. And the variant Owen Hart used on Austin... that was just farking stupidity.

A lot of people in the business thought Owen breaking Austin's neck was karma for Austin breaking Masahiro Chono's neck with literally the exact same move. (new window)

For what it's worth I banged a coworker this past New Year's who very much resembles Woman. Crazy night, but at no point did I feel compelled to choke her out with a goddamned wrestling move.

5 years? Damn. I still remember watching all of the Benoit references being removed from the WWE website almost in real time after the found out he was the cause of the deaths. Especially after they had that memorial service for him.

If only Nancy had tapped, Chris would be in the hall of fame by now.

I can't fap to a dead Woman.

I know a lot of people are going to be butthurt over this, and I doubt I will return in a timely manner to reply to any of the responses, but from the evidence the autopsy noted Benoit had a brain of an "advanced Alzheimer's patient" if you look up the facts. In other words, he was mentally ill - knowing what we know now if he were to stand trial he would be found not guilty by reason of insanity. He basically had the same brain injuries that a ton of NFL players have that have gone crazy and killed themselves. It's a terrible tragedy, but not one we can place blame on Benoit for, in my view, any more than we can place blame on someone with severe dementia acting out. It's a shame his legacy was ruined.

ongbok: This is true. And if anybody has ever known any Alzheimer's patients you would know that they have been known to get violent and attack people. However in Benoit's case this wasn't an 80 year old attacking, this was a 30 something, strong as an ox athlete.

Gotta bring up Verne Gagne bodyslamming his roommate to death. Granted, the style Verne worked wasn't as bump-heavy as is worked today, but you don't necessarily need to crack your coconut on the mat or a chair to get a concussion. I also have no idea if Verne's condition was a byproduct of his years in the ring.
